I think I figured out part of why I really fuck with this Ab Soul album: this is basically what I thought/hoped Oxymoron would be. The dark, brooding production that still bounces...just feels like the type of shit Q should have dropped. Obviously Oxymoron had a lot of bangers and is one of the reasons Q blew up so successfully but I still think that album is disappointing.

DWTW might be the best produced album of the year. Not only that, it's also mixed immaculately. I'm reminded of TPAB (which Ali mixed too) and I watched some interviews and Ab mentioned that album was the inspiration for the warmness he wanted on this album. I can tell, it sounds crisp as fuck and a lot of shit is going on yet sounds good. At this point it seems undeniable that TDE is basically running shit. Ali+the best in house production in rap=can't be fucked with.

Lyrically the album has some corny punchlines and smart dumb nicca shit, but the more I listen the more it's clear most of the album is solid, personal lyrical shit. And while I'm far from a smart dumb nicca I find the threading concept of divine femininity to be interesting. He sells it well, entertainment wise.

There are a lot of stand out tracks on this shit. Huey Knew, Threatening Nature, Invocation, Gods A Girl?, Now You Know, D.R.U.G.S, Evil Genius, Lonely Soul, The Law, YMF...

Q described the idea as "corny" in an interview, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

It'd def. be cornier now that K.Dot is a mega star, Q doing very well, Jay is a west coast feature killer and Soulo is King Smart Dumb nicca. They're all at vastly different levels now I couldn't see them chilling in the studio for any meaningful amount of time to make 10-12 songs.

Yea. I hadn't really thought about it until a couple days ago when I heard Soul do an interview and mention he flew to NY on a cheap Jet Blue flight. Dot and Q are platinum selling major label artists living the life flying first class, room service, etc while everyone else operates on an independent label budget. Kinda makes me wonder whether a TDE tour is even a feasible idea. I know that's been the goal their management has discussed, and Kendrick+Q could definitely do an arena tour...but I'm not sure how everyone else would fit in. Jay Rock doesn't have enough material, same with Rashad and SZA. Soul's new album sounds very tour friendly to me tho, regardless of venue.

The Firm album came out after Illmatic and IWW (debuted at #1 and went 2x platinum). Vol 2 (debuted at #1 and went 5x platinum) came out a year before The Dynasty. Thug Life came out after Strictly 4 My Negus (went platinum, but debuted at #24. I'm willing to concede on this one).

Black Hippy's way better than Nas, Jay, and Pac's respective hangers on. The group album can happen and it'll be at least decent.

I don't see why they couldn't put together a tape that's a collection of each members songs with a feature or two from other members on them. Pulling them all together into the studio for a full LP might be a stretch logistically though

That could work in the sense of making it as low stakes, and built over a long period of time as possible.

Just have one of their in house producers exec it like a pet project over a year or so. Saving verses and beats as they all make/work on their solo shit. Then come out one day like "yo I kinda put together a decent black hippy albuum"

If it doesn't happen next year it might not ever happen. Kendrick is allegedly headlining Coachella, and they'd be stupid not to have a new album for him to roll out at that time (April 2017) or shortly afterward. Seems like it would make sense to roll a TDE tour into Kendrick's tour, so basically Q/Soul/Rock/etc opening for him in arenas. Maybe do a secret Black Hippy album release during the tour in the fall.

Give me a Black Hippy album produced entirely by Cardo and I'm in.
