While other people might dig back deeper, I think it was Simple Plan in 2002 that brought this shit to the mainstream.

Also, I think Nickelback on got radio play in the first place because of a Canadian law.

Just about all rock these days suffers from varying degrees of it. I think the biggest reason why is that most people think that the amount of whining and moaning is a measure of depth. So whining is set full blast on a lot of rock music, whether it is "hard rock" like Disturbed, emo shit like My Chemical Romance, or indie crap. Which is just perfect for 14 year old boys and girls to relate to.

When I heard the name I thought Panic at the Disco would be a dance rock band, which even though nowadays I'm starting to get a bit weary of that particular style, it's still ohhhhh soooo muchhhh better than what they actually turned out to be.

I don't think Sublime and RHCP are all that horrible, they may be very mainstream-friendly and easily digestible with their sound, but there's nothing completely off-putting about them. (i.e. whiny emo vocals)

Well, they were responsible for the whole genre of grime, which had some good stuff come out from it... but yeah the production on a lot of their songs left a lot to be desired. I thought it was funny when there were something like 20 guys and one girl in the group at one point.

Well, they were responsible for the whole genre of grime, which had some good stuff come out from it... but yeah the production on a lot of their songs left a lot to be desired. I thought it was funny when there were something like 20 guys and one girl in the group at one point.

it was hilarious

i think the rise of the so solid crew was really the beginning of the end of my interest in UKG as a genre.

Well, So Solid was the first group I recall that really focused on the MCing aspect of garage (which has always been around), turning it from simple oldskool-hiphop influenced party rhymes (MC Creed, DJ Luck and MC Neat) into more edgier songs about the "streets". The success of So Solid pretty much spelled the end for the more soulful and melodic element of UK garage, and grime as we know it came from further paring down this harder, rougher UKG sound and making it even edgier... in fact, Wiley originally came from the Pay As You Go Cartel, one of these groups formed in the wake of So Solid's success... I think when garage started shifting to grime and the El B/Zed Bias sound started shifting to dubstep, is when I lost interest in the UK garage offshoots. Don't mind dubstep too much (<3 Burial) but I miss the tight production, jazzy riffs, and vocal cutups of the first wave of 2-step.

it starts off "straight" but then after the first bridge it goes fast and they lose it and start laughing at the end.

Oh yes, please do! I notice that I'm finding quite a lot more garage on Soulseek lately, too... finally managed to track down the dub mix of Groove Chronicles "Holiday Da Vybe" which I was looking for for a while.

I've read an awful lot of articles about Radiohead (too many probably), and I've never seen them lumped into the category. They don't sound like any of the bands mentioned on this page, as far as I can tell: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emo I've only seen the weakest of trolls use the descriptor.

Very few of Thom Yorke's lyrics after the Bends have been personal to that extent. They might be dark and his voice and might sound whiny to you (though it just sounds nasal to me, and that's not his only singing style), but I can't think of many songs coming out in the 2000's (which is the subject of this thread) from them that would be about how hard his life is on a personal level.

I'm not here to defend muse :P

My friend drunkenly told the Yellowcard singer his band sucked while he was standing outside his tour bus. He didn't seem impressed.
