i've been playing some warzone 2, and while the map is loading up there are open voice comms with the 149 other people in the server. being the distinguished crowd of learned men it is, the result is a howling chorus of barely intelligble "person of a darker hue" and "one who enjoys the company of other men" being drilled into your skull. it sounds not unlike what i'd imagine the warp in warhammer 40k to sound like, a grotesque distorted singularity, the song of a species wishing to be put out of its misery.

definitely has promise as a twitter replacement.

So mastadon is moderated like reddit, where the worst dredges of society get their only happiness by arbitrarily blocking people?

mastodon.social is the equivalent of just one very large subreddit, like, you're not signing up to only see what's said in r/mastodon, you're signing up to view all of reddit (the fediverse)

basically every server is like a subreddit where the individual powertripping mods can ban you from there, but not from other subreddits

but they also have the ability to block entire other subreddits, so no one in THIS subreddit (mastodon) can see the icky people posting over in r/joerogan or whatever, because we decided collectively as the mastodon mods that they're transphobic over there and no one here should be able to read what they say

But like, nothing's stopping you from visiting the url directly right? I guess you'd have to make a new account there instead of reusing your mastodon.social account, but honestly that's better imo. My personality, posting style and content are all different depending on the context. I don't want all my shit tied together for easy doxxing either lol.

How is that different than Twitter? Closed source, just waiting to be bought out if it manages to get enough traction.
If you actually want full control, why not just run your own mastodon server?

While it’s extremely impressive that what is there on Hive has been built and maintained by two people, that raises some pretty serious questions about its ability to scale, and if you spend much time on the app, its shortcomings compared to much more established social media sites are pretty apparent.

- The app feels…fragile, like it’s about to break at a moment’s notice. There’s significant UI and loading lag a lot of the time, and it just does not feel technically stable. That may get worse the more people join.
- There is no desktop version of Hive Social…at all. It doesn’t exist, which is bad since at least half my Twitter time is on desktop.
- You can’t thread tweets, and it’s easy to lose track of comments.
- I don’t think you can embed Hive posts anywhere else.
Sharing an article on Hive doesn’t even give me a thumbnail preview, just a literal hyperlink.
- You can’t search people by name. Searching “Paul Tassi” or “@paultassi” turns up no results, you have to search “paultassi” only.
- Speaking of @ names, if Twitter’s new verification poses an identity-stealing problem, apparently on Hive multiple people can all claim the same @ name. I’m already seeing things like @Brand accounts that are definitely not the main company. If this gets more and more popular, this is about to start happening at scale, and be very bad.

What a shitshow.

there've been issues along the way, people talking about their issues, not realizing when the issues are fixed etc

https://www.cnet.com/tech/services-and-software/twitter-in-turmoil-heres-how-to-join-the-mastodon-social-network/

Quote
The Mastodon organization provides a partial list of servers -- about 100 -- on its joinmastodon.org site. You can filter the servers by geographic region, language, topic registration process and whether or not they're hosted by individuals or organizations. All servers on the official Mastodon site have agreed to follow the best practices of the Mastodon Server Covenant.

If you're just testing Mastodon out, you might consider one of the official server instances run by the Mastodon organization. While the first and biggest -- mastodon.social -- has temporarily paused registration, a newer mastodon.online server is still open and picking up the slack.

If you want a bigger list of Mastodon servers to review, your best bet right now is instances.social, which offers a sortable list of about 4,000 Mastodon servers, as well as a wizard-style app that helps you choose a server that fits your requirements.

The site provides useful data about each Mastodon instance, including number of users, number of "statuses" (posts), server uptime percentage and which versions of the Mastodon software it is running. It also lets you filter servers by language; minimum/maximum number of users; and prohibited/allowed content such as nudity, pornography, advertisements or entertainment spoilers. You can also click any instance name -- fosstodon.org, for example, a server devoted to open-source software -- to read a brief description of the community.

Once you're actually on a Mastodon site, you can learn about the instance from its "about" page, browse community users on its "explore" page or view recent posts on its "public" page.

You should read the server rules for each Mastodon instance to make sure it's a good fit, but don't worry too much about which server you join. You can follow users on other servers and join and leave as many Mastodon servers as you'd like. If you do move around, Mastodon allows you to migrate all of your followers and lists with you.

Quote
Each Mastodon instance will have its own sign-up process, but the vast majority are the same. You provide a username, email address and password, check the box agreeing to the terms of service and server rules, and click "Sign Up."

You'll then see a notification asking you to check your email for a verification message. Click the "Verify email address" in that email message, and you're done. You can now start posting on your Mastodon server and follow anyone in the Fediverse.

Because of the increased traffic to Mastodon servers since Elon Musk's purchase of Twitter, some of those registration emails are taking a long time to show up or never arriving at all.

When I registered for the mas.to server last week, I got a confirmation email in about 15 minutes. I'm still waiting for a verification email from sfba.social for a registration attempt three days ago.
Be patient, and try a new server if you can't complete the registration for another.

After you verify your email address, your Mastodon account should be up and running. You can start posting or following people, though it will take a while to build up your feed. Web tools like Debirdify and FediFinder can jump-start the process by helping you find your Twitter contacts on Mastodon.

While most Mastodon servers offer the quick registration process described above, other, more private instances will ask that you apply for an invitation to the instance, which requires a manual review and longer registration time.

It reminds me of when there was a big deal about people leaving Substack because they wouldn't (and at the time said they didn't have enough people to) moderate authors for non-illegal content. All kinds of stories about the brave and stunning people who refused to participate with anywhere that allowed transphobia and were leaving for Ghost instead.

Except Ghost had absolutely no moderation at all. (But Ghost did, at the time, provide authors with a slightly bigger share of subscription revenue under a certain threshold of subscribers. Neither of these things being mentioned in any of the stories like the large ones in the NYT.)

My independently established theory is that they think their Twitter feed is literally reality, voice of the people or something. The number of stories they write based on something they saw on Twitter and sourced only from Twitter people (qualified or not) is too high for me to dismiss this theory.

I'm going to spend my social media energy towards more productive things, starting with doing more Speedrunning on Twitch.

newsfeed
Just gonna say it, people who chase world-records are some of the saddest sad sacks I can only barely comprehend. Especially non-athletic records.

Human excellence should be celebrated. Speedrunning as a career should be lightly mocked.
Brianna Wu finally streamed speedrunning on Twitch for the first time ever:

https://twitter.com/BriannaWu/status/1595064382911922178

Then went back to tweeting multiple times like every single day since previously announcing giving up Twitter.

edit: The above claim is true, Wu is indeed the second fastest Peach speedrunner in Super Mario Advance. Second place of the two people who have posted times: https://www.speedrun.com/sma?h=Peach_Only-Any&x=9d8n35wd-9l75y1p8.z19wz9kq

Just gonna say it, people who chase world-records are some of the saddest sad sacks I can only barely comprehend. Especially non-athletic records.

Human excellence should be celebrated. Speedrunning as a career should be lightly mocked.

the only thing better than that would be if no one actually cares about the peach record from mario advance and wu just languishes at #2 forever without any other competition

Aaron watches all the Trump rallies and posts the highlights so we don't have to :salute :trumps

Aaron: "Can't believe Trump ran clips of Joe Biden stuttering on the jumbotron and he insulted Angela Merkel"  :brazilcry

Tweeps: "Trump did what now?"  :neogaf
