Cheers. I talked with several folks from Tokyo about getting a group together, with an eye towards opening up a gym at some point down the road. But for the moment, I'll just keep practicing training on my poor training partner because I don't think I have the chops to really train anyone other than newbs. Time to put down the heavy weights and go back to basics with a PVC pipe!

Here's the prob jinfash: 99% of gyms offer NO formal fitness training these days. For most people, the last time you get real athletic training is in high school. The good news is you don't really need it. I've been doing Crossfit for 2yrs now, and last weekend was the first time I set foot in an actual Crossfit gym. They have some awesome stuff that I'd love to have regular access to, but anyone can still do the majority of the workouts with a few basic and cheap pieces of equipment. You can get started with no equipment whatsoever, of course. You could be doing tabata squats right now, instead of reading EB!  Hell, you could do them WHILE reading EB, although the counting might get tricky

I think I've bookmarked every page you've posted about Crossfit training, and called every gym I suspect is, umm, sophisticated enough to offer some of its programs to no avail. I've reached the level where I just want any type of formal fitness training and just stick with it; I need to stick with something.

Seek out a martial arts club?  That would offer some guided training and motivation.

I've found it hard to bulk up from being skinny. I don't retain the weight to transform it into leaner forms. I picked up bicycling to improve my legs, but arm strength has been hard to improve. I use to have strong legs, so I know I can accomplish that. The arms have always been noodles.

Yeah, you look German, but I can see scandahoovian in there as well. I'm 1/4 swede and 1/4 norsk and I get the "German" thing all the time, too.

As always, I'd suggest boxing, Jin. If it's a good gym, there'll be plently of structure, and there tends to be more of a workout than you'd get in martial arts. And make no mistake, there are usually plenty of guys who do it without ever actually stepping into the ring for a real fight, if that part doesn't interest you.
