The worst part is definitely the people who still talk about this shit 20 years after the fact 
The Phantom Menace and Prequel Trilogy accurately predicted where politics would be heading 10 - 15 years from the films release.

I also never got the hate for TPM after the initial disappointment as it was clearly aimed at a younger audience and they back peddled from that shift.
There's some bad stuff in there for sure (Jar Jar lmao) but it isn't nearly as big as a disaster as Attack of the Clones or The Last Jedi and like The Force Awakens hits most of the 'Star Wars' marks.
TPM is a very ambitious film with faults but a lot of effort went into making it and technology wise they did a ton of things never before seen in films. I remember as a kid the movie was a very big deal and outside
of really vocal hardcore fans people mostly enjoyed it even though it was clearly worse than the previous 3 films.

So bad it's good: SW Christmas Special
