That's just it though, you don't need to play entire games to judge them yourself. You never had and you never will. We all grew up reading reviews in magazines, and sure ofcourse there are outliers for games that are just shitty, or reviews that aren't aligned to your own personal tastes.
In some cases a review will trash a game, I remember a early dutch magazine called Power Unlimited gave Super Mario Kart for the SNES a 6.5 (LOL) which I thought was one of the best games on that system.
But in a lot of cases, there are plenty of genuine Mass Effect fans that have been dissapointed in the series after 3's ending. Now I personally haven't played Mass Effect 3, only the first two games. But I consider them interesting space opera rpg games where the dialogue and the choices are more interesting than the shooting mechanics. Mind you, I never wanted them to focus more on combat, but more on building your own story. When I heard a lot of fans were not satisfied with 3, I decided just to keep it at that. I had fond memories of the first two games and have replayed them over the years, but never had much interest to play 3.
The next Bioware game I played after that was Dragon Age Inquisition. Now that was a truly boring game. It put me to sleep multiple times. I played up until I fought a dragon in the desert.. it was supposed to be this exciting battle I presume, but it was mind numbingly boring. So many boring fetch quests, the story wasn't at all interesting and even though the zones were allright, there was no sense of discovery of finding something cool if I just explored a little more.
Then Mass Effect Andromeda came out, and ofcourse when it launched it wasn't in a decent state. So many bugs, and the writing seemed a serious problem as well. Also there was only one real new species? Even though it's in an entirely different galaxy? Hmmk.
I'm sure the combat is enjoyable but I honestly have no will or desire to sit through another 60 hours of mediocre Bioware fetch quests, and sit through a mediocre story with mildly interesting characters. There are so many damn good games to play right now, in my backlog there are still over 400 games that deserve a playthrough. So I really can't be arsed to spend 6 euro's and play it myself. In that case I'd rather look at a few different reviews from genuine fans of the genre or game, and say you know what this probably isn't worth my time.
