Working out the numbers right now and writing a document to explain to the government aid program that we'll lose about 50% of our revenue over the coming weeks.
Kinda sad that only employees with part time or full time contracts are covered and there's literally nothing for those on 0-hour contracts. Which some of our student workers have.

Trying to see if I can work something out for them but it seems dire at this point.
I'm at least allowing some of them to work more hours this week on existing projects. 

Luckily some of them still live with their parents so they won't be left out on the streets or anything but it's going to suck telling them they will have no income for the foreseeable future.

I stayed in an airbnb for the first time a month ago and they had this one conditioner that really works well with my hair (starting to grow it out). I decided to get some today. I go to the Walmart in San Jose/Cupertino and it's pandemonium. EVERY single jug of dairy milk was gone, only a few soy/almond jugs left. Most of the bread and canned goods too but at least you could justify that compared to milk that'll spoil.

I also saw an aisle in the back that was totally bare. Not one thing left. I'm guessing that's the former toilet paper aisle and now it just looks dismal and Soviet.

And in case you're wondering why I got a tour of the whole store when I was just in for conditioner that I sampled/stole from an airbnb, that's because the lines to the cash register stretched all the way to the back of the store and wrapped around. As soon as I saw that, I decided to go home and watch my Mad Max bluray set for hair styling inspiration.

Honestly, I wasn't sure how to begin this story or how to fit all the insanity into the title. It's a story involving patents, patent trolling, Covid-19, Theranos, and even the company that brought us all WeWork: SoftBank. Oh, and also Irell & Manella, the same law firm that once claimed it could represent a monkey in a copyright infringement dispute. You see, Irell & Manella has now filed one of the most utterly bullshit patent infringement lawsuits you'll ever see. They are representing "Labrador Diagnostics LLC" a patent troll which does not seem to exist other than to file this lawsuit, and which claims to hold the rights to two patents (US Patents 8,283,155 and 10,533,994) which, you'll note, were originally granted to Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos -- the firm that shut down in scandal over medical testing equipment that appears to have been oversold and never actually worked. Holmes is still facing federal charges of wire fraud over the whole Theranos debacle.

However, back in 2018, the remains of Theranos sold its patents to Fortress Investment Group. Fortress Investment Group is a SoftBank-funded massive patent troll. You may remember the name from the time last fall when Apple and Intel sued the firm, laying out how Fortress is a sort of uber-patent troll, gathering up a bunch of patents and then shaking down basically everyone. Lovely, right?

So, this SoftBank-owned patent troll, Fortress, bought up Theranos patents, and then set up this shell company, "Labrador Diagnostics," which decided that right in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic it was going to sue one of the companies making Covid-19 tests, saying that its test violates those Theranos patents, and literally demanding that the court bar the firm from making those Covid-19 tests.

A bit more background here: the company they're suing, BioFire, recently launched three Covid-19 tests built off of the company's FilmArray technology. And that's what "Labrador" (read: SoftBank) is now suing over.

So, let's summarize: The firm that basically created the mess that is WeWork by dumping billions of dollars into the company, also owns a patent troll that bought up the patents from the sham medical testing firm Theranos, and is now using those patents to sue one of the few diagnostics companies that is actually making a Covid-19 test... in the middle of a pandemic. And, demanding the use of those tests be blocked

At work yesterday I got a call from someone who was coughing and hacking up something nasty.  She was in the office despite 1. everyone being told to stay the fuck at home if they're even remotely sick over the last few weeks and 2. everyone being told to work from home starting this week.

Like 80% of Americans don't have enough money saved to handle going without a single paycheck, if everything stays closed for 5 months, this country is going to be absolute chaos.

It's an indictment on how fragile a society you built on weak labor legislation actually is. In France some of the current shock can be partly mitigated through public support to incentivize companies to declare a technical work shortage or partial shutdown with most employees having a permanent or fixed end date contracts guaranteed a decent portion of their normal wages.

Not sustainable long term, though even that is debatable when you look at actual wartime records.

(CNN)A Kentucky novel coronavirus patient checked himself out of the hospital against medical advice. So to prevent him from spreading the virus, officials are surrounding his house to keep him there.

The 53-year-old man in Nelson County refused to quarantine himself after testing positive for Covid-19, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said.

Beshear didn't share then how the government had forced the unnamed man to stay in his home.
But this week, Nelson County Sheriff Ramon Pineiroa told the Kentucky Standard that deputies will park outside of the man's home for 24 hours a day for two weeks. The patient is cooperating now, Pineiroa said.
When reached for comment by CNN, the Nelson County Sheriff's Department deferred all comments to Beshear.
