for people who have read the comic, I have a question:

Does Shane kill Otis (or any character) in order to use them as zombie bait in the comic, or is that the show's spin on shit

Alongside my previous Happy Endings post, How To Make It In America is like Entourage but actually good. From a production standpoint, there's no better looking show out right now. It oozes New York style from every fucking seam. I love it.

i haven't watched any of the new season of TWD but based on what you've wrote... (and the finale of the first season)... it's already spinning into it's own shit. i'll leave it at that.

Eh, so far there's no real struggle for the main characters. Entourage did that a lot better in its better seasons.

That's not true. They are constantly struggling to make a dime off of Crisp, and they've only had one real success (Tokyo) and have yet to break into the NY scene at all.

Anyway, How To Make It In America is also the most mellow show you could watch. Perfect for a Sunday evening.

Eh.  I watched the first episode last weekend.  In short.  No.  It's pretty awful.  At least the first episode was.  I can handle cheese (I watched 5 seasons of Smallville) but it's cheesy and just plain shitty.

Really liked last night's The Walking Dead, but they are just getting further and further away from the source material.

I don't think there is anything wrong with that. Kind of refreshing to see something other than a scene for scene rehash.

Hard to say how'd they'd handle subsequent seasons (unless they fail resolution this season to set up others then I think people might rightfully bail). They do already have great characterisation coming out their wahzoo, but it'll so diminished if it just becomes a security intelligence procedural.

Decided to start watching Homeland. I caught what I think was the most recent episode on Showtime and there was something about how the torturing scene was done so normally (sleep deprivation), felt real and chilling.

He really has some gravitas. I liked him in Criminal Minds the few times I'd passively watch it. The cast in general in Homeland seem to have some depth where sometimes they'd feel like caricatures in 24. Also all the psychological aspects was a surprise. I also really like how Claire Danes character is being handled.

I'm just so over that show although I know a lot of people still like it.  I was mostly bored on that episode along with the storm one. I just don't really get that show anymore. They always do at least one or two great episodes in a season so I'm just waiting for that.

The only weak ep has been the storm one, which was kind of redeemed by the funny end. I've viewed Always Sunny like Stony for awhile: too extreme, too ridiculous, etc. But this season has really impressed me.

The weakest part of Spartacus occurs before he reaches Batiatus' house. With Batiatus now out of the picture I wonder how things will play out in terms of drama, intrigue, etc. IMO he dominated the first season as well as the prologue and I just can't see how things move on without him. Those first episodes focused on a rag tag rebel alliance against the Romans, and it didn't work at all. Considering S2 will mainly be focused on a similar angle I'm kind of worried.

I'm interested in what Lucretia's storyline will be. She's gotta be out for revenge, but given how shitty she treated that blonde chick who knows what her status will be.

I kinda marathoned through Always Sunny and near the end the show was definitely wearing thin. This season has been pretty great though, I think it's a show much better taken in small doses, plus they've seemed to have settled into it's overthetopness, where I think previous seasons felt like the show was coming off the rails.

Finished Downton Abbey last night. Beautifully shot, acted, etc. Perhaps the only thing I didn't like was some of the  coincidence devices, and one of the characters is like more honorable than Ned Stark, to the point it feels ridiculous.

Yeah it kicks into high gear after it establishes characters sufficiently. Im glad I gave it another shot.

The characters are most definitely unlikable. Walt and Jesse make an entertaining duo though and that's good enough for me while I yell at the tv because the wife is a huge biotch.

I need to pick up mad men again though. I finished season 1 and loved it. I just never jumped into season 2

Jesse gets more likeable as the plot moves forward, while Walt just gets more and more despicable.  And I disagree about Skyler.  Her husbands nuking the entire family before her eyes and she's reacting to it, even if she doesn't know exactly how to.  I know we all want her to fit the mold of loving supportive wife, but it would be suicide.

Actually that would be The Sopranos

The only unlikable character in Breaking Bad is Jesse, imo. I'm not in the "Walter White has never done anything wrong" fanboy camp, but as a character I find him engaging and likable.

When people say "likeable" they don't always mean likeable.  It's an important distinction.
This. I don't need them to feel like they could be my bff. I need them to be written in a way that lets me see things from their side instead of me always yelling at my tv WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING DUMBASS. Other things qualify but that's my major one.

I'm asking for characters who are complete pieces of shit but have reasons to be endearing. I would care about Jesse but he's such a pathetic piece of shit who continuously fucks himself over every time he wants to "change" and he bends to Walt's will like he's taking his dick up his ass.

Compare this to Mad Men, where most everyone is a fucking asshole but they're written in such a way that there are moments where you genuinely care about them and want them to succeed despite the fact that succeeding is letting them continue to be assholes. Breaking Bad really has none of that.

I watch Breaking Bad much like how I watch Weeds: Continuously waiting for someone to finally throw Walt in prison, or kill him, or something. I'm glad the show is ending at five seasons because it means I might get to revel in that.

Weeds, however, keeps narrowly dodging killing off Nancy Botwin so much that it might never happen.
