JJ Abrams on TV :holeup not for me

Abrams was only involved in Season 1 of Lost, Lindelof and Cuse were the ones that drove that train all the way to Shit Town.

Abrams wrote the show's "bible" which featured long term plot and shit like that. Dharma was planned from the beginning which makes sense; that worked pretty well on screen especially in S4. A lot of other shit, including the smoke monster, was basically "we'll make shit up as we go."

There was also supposed to be less sci fi, which they threw out the window by combining with the worst possible thing imaginable: time travel.

It's not forcing a label. The show is tentpoled by a female actress' performance, the show's big themes are how much of a woman's body she has possession of, as well as redefining what family means. The male characters are either villains or cardboard caricatures, very often one-note.

http://www.etonline.com/tv/134713_Tatiana_Maslany_Orphan_Black_Season_Finale_Interview/

The show is a lot about women's stories, and most of them don't involve a man. In that sense, it not only passes the Bechdel test, but also the reverse Bechdel test. There's no label being forced here -- it's a very pro-woman show and because of that it is very feminist.

"Orphan Black is a Canadian science fiction television series created by screenwriter Graeme Manson and director John Fawcett, starring Tatiana Maslany as several identical women who are revealed to be clones. The series focuses on Sarah Manning, a woman who assumes the identity of her clone, Elizabeth (Beth) Childs, after witnessing Beth's suicide. The series raises issues about the moral and ethical implications of human cloning and its effect on issues of personal identity."

I'll pass for now, never enjoyed "clone fiction" if that's even word. If it finds it's way on netflix or hulu or something I'll give it a shot.
It's Tatiana's performance that really saves what is otherwise B-level science fiction. Her acting is among the best TV has offered. There's a smorgasbord of articles explaining why, if you're curious.

finally going thru the last season of lost, four years after the fact. somehow never managed to have it spoiled. i mean, i heard it was bad and all, but never any specifics. still didnt prepare me for how much it sucks. the plot was always aimless, but the conflict in this season came out of nowhere, which is especially sad since there were ten million other events that were foreshadowed. they ruined one of my favorite characters and killed off most of the others, except for the shitty ones of course. now theres a fucking origin story episode that seriously has two twins, one with blonde hair dressed in white and on with brown hair dressed in black. this shit is unbelievable :lol
For Lost and BSG I just end up remembering the stuff I like and try to excise the stuff I didn't like from my mind. The two shows always go together for me in that regard. I use to be really pissed about both but such time has passed that now I honestly barely remember the last seasons of either. Someday I'll rewatch both (I've already watched BSG all the way through at least a few times) to relive the good and bad.

One of my friends gives me a lot of shit about catching up with American TV long, long after the fact. I've been in Japan since 2001, so it shouldn't surprise him that I'm not up on a lot of stuff. I get crap about not knowing anything about Lost or The Shield or whatever. The other day he harassed me about Battlestar Galactica. "Have you EVEN SEEN it?"

"Well, yeah, but I stopped after season 2."

"Oh. Yeah, OK, well that was probably for the best."

Checked out the pilot for Dracula. Shit is bonkers. There are parts that make me facepalm and there are parts that make me go :leon

Sometimes the show looks sumptuous and sometimes it looks like cheap shit. Gonna stick with it tho. I like this evil Count Of Monte Cristo version of the mythos.

That sword fight tho :heh Shit looked like it belonged in a series that aired on UPN.

Started Hannibal. I don't like the flash...well, dunno what to call them...basically where Will views the murder scene as if he did it. But outside of that I enjoyed the pilot. But good lord Hannibal needs to pronounce his words more clearly, I can't believe NBC ok'd that shit. I can understand him but there are some words that just go whoosh. How can old people understand what he's saying, given NBC's demographics?

I like Arrow. A lot. I watched all of s1 as I marathoned it over the weekend. Loved every episode in that season. It is a fun pulp superhero show mixed with procedural television formula and it really works. The flashback structure helped create a sense of mystery: "what happened on the island? What happens next?" that helped the show have a very addictive nature to it and it was endlessly entertaining even if it was cheesy pulp.

So far, season 1 is objectively better in almost every way than season 2. Season 2 almost makes me want to quit. The list in season 1 gave Green Arrow a direction. There's hardly any direction in this season so far and not nearly as many interesting plotlines. Merlyn coming back and revealing that he's Theah's father while coercing Mrs. Queen. Sound familiar? Sarah being alive and being trained by the League? Face palm worthy. Oliver being naive and thinking that everyone will be okay if he just throws a party for his mom, who is an accomplice in destroying a giant portion of the city? Pretty FUCKING STUPID, and out of character. Which, in a lot of ways, extends to almost every character in the show this season, from Laurel, to her father, and even Oliver himself.

To make things terrible. The flashbacks in season 1 kept me enthralled and captivated and addicted to the show. They were better than the present story. They're now boring me, especially since they've decided to double down on the romance and make Shado a romantic interest. They just couldn't leave a strong kick ass female character alone without having a man make her worth something, now could they? No. She needs Oliver cock, even though Oliver stares at a picture of the girlfriend he cheated on and regrets cheating on. But no, it makes TOTAL SENSE that Oliver hasn't made amends with that and just wants to continue fucking random women, even though he clearly said last season that he was done with his actions hurting other people. WHOOPS!

Never mind this whole Japanese super soldier plot line is fucking boring compared to the "hunted on an island with mercenaries plotline" as in s1. I get that it is a CW show, but fuck. Some of the writing in s2 has gone straight to terrible cheese ville as opposed to charming cheesville which the previous season embodied.

The great thing about s1 is that it felt like everything connected and had weight. S2 feels so filler-ish to me so far despite a lot of important stuff happening. Sarah turns up alive, and hasn't been mentioned in like three episodes. What was the POINT? I'm like 6 episodes into s2, and I can't recall ANY of the villains Green Arrow has taken down this entire season aside from The Count.

Sara in the league of assassins? I think that's when the show jumped the shark. Sara also on the island with Slade, Shado, and Oliver? Corny teen romance adventures.

Show is turning to shit. Hopefully s2 gets better.
