In all seriousness, Ars Technica did a terrible job on even doing a cursory search on his social profile. Like holy shit, do a background check at least.
Amazingly ars hired him all the while he posted shit like this lol.

In all seriousness, Ars Technica did a terrible job on even doing a cursory search on his social profile. Like holy shit, do a background check at least.

The guy has been writing in the field for 20 years (please correct me if I misunderstood this - edit : 10 years at Ars, wasn't a pro writer before that but in the digital induatry) and was a "known quantity", before even the social media age, as far as his skill, competence, ability to deliver and probably a friend / acquaintance / part of the social circle in some capacity.

I mean what would a "background check" even turn up ? That he had a bunch of racy / saucy / bad taste tweets (obnoxiously so), a loud online persona and kind of an asshole maybe ? None of it has any bearing on his capacity to work. Being abrasive might even be considered a good thing for an outline outlet, that's a pretty common character that can stoke audience engagement.

Unless there's some shady shit happening at ArsTechnica, there's no link between his employment and the twisted illegal shit he's accused of. I'm a bit mellow at the idea of "background checks" conducted by employers as a panacea.

TLDR Hindsight is 20/20.

How to discuss things on RE:

Quote
Not downplaying sexual assault since I have been a victim of it several times in my life, but which part of the scene is specifically provocative of sexual assault? In comparison to say Red Sparrow, Outlander or Precious? This just seems like a dirty old man being provocative.

- Before someone gets out the pitchforks and torches and reports this post, I'm merely delving into subjectivity, themes and topics and trying to understand how it can be comparative to significantly stronger and actually shown cases of sexual assault in film. I am in no way condoning sexual assault. I am trying to understand the context.

Concern trolling?  That's a ban.

RedMercury with his dumbshit "It's not what you do, it's who you do it to" legal analysis again.
Where do you draw the line RM? Is it okay to rape a racist?

People aren't saying "You should not conduct yourself in this manner, and the fact they are a bad person does not excuse behaving like that" because there's a 'truce'.

They are saying that because doing bad things to bad people makes you a bad person. Because you are doing bad things.
Thats how you can tell someone is a bad person. They do bad things.

"Oh, I did bad things because they are bad, look double negative, it cancels out my bad things being bad" isn't how ethics work. You're literally just victim blaming.

I think we'll disagree here, those tweets are terrible and a I realize a personal account shouldn't be a reflection on a company, but just the jailbait tweets alone would should have alerted a company this would have been a risky hire. Oh yeah the jailbait ones are horrible but they're all from 2009 (everyone I saw was, at least) so around the time he started at Ars. Going on an hypothetical, even if questioned about it he might just have responded "I had a rough patch in my sentimental life and acted dumb, I didn't mean literal jailbait yadda yadda" or somesuch and maybe that would have been enough (not saying it's a valid excuse or anything but heh).

Notions of vetting gets thrown a lot these days with social media and whatnot but except when it is necessary (and perhaps there's a debate that journalists are public figures now) nobody got the time for that*. The US might be more lax on that but it's also sometimes a fine line between vetting and discrimination...

I get what you mean, but assholes are a popular niche in forums / 2.0 journalists conversing directly with audiences. Everyone kind of a shock jock these days, people identify as curries on Twitter and fast food companies are competing over the most clever memes.
:trumps

ArsTechnica (or Condé Nast) is surely gonna review some of their guidelines for employment as a result, with good reason.

Might as well continue to play Devil's advocate : it was just an edgy joke until it turned out it wasn't. One guy on ERA was just banned for "woman chained in basement" joke.
I'm not as familiar with his history as other are here but he had plenty of posts lambasting pedos too.

It's like when we'll find out Benji is a Chinese MSS agent and that all the doxxing talk was 100% real.

There’s definitely some truth to the idea that people who are wrestling with “demons” will project a lot.

It’s just dumb when that’s applied in reverse as if it’s proof some statistically significant percentage of people who are against something are actually secretly part of the problem.

Male feminists aren’t all a bunch of closeted creeps and homophobes don’t all crave dick, etc.

Did you run covert actions tho ?

Agreed. Both myself and my son were like “wtf” when the dog with a sword in its mouth was revealed.

Hate it.
