I remember Nintards being all puzzled when only 30,000 copies were going to get shipped out initially.  Sounds like even that was too much.

Welp, shoulda stuck with the original idea of using Nintendo characters.

Then it would have sold 10k.

Wii U software sales are, uh, pretty bad.

And this is new information to you?

To be honest, I thought the game would sell better than that.

are those US sales? I'm arguing with someone who does't think there's been a shift in kid spending/playing habits to tablets and that my saying so is "privilege"

I SAID THIS EXACTLY, I asked if they had actually seen any children lately or were just making assumptions, but again I am speaking from a position of white privilege to say that every single fucking kid in the world now has a tablet

I pointed out that a proprietary platform used only for $40 games seemed a lot more privileged to me ... we're probably not on speaking terms any more

I work at both a middle school and a high school. In the cafeteria before classes start in the mornigns, I see lots of kids playing around with their iPhones and Androids, and a tablet here and there (guessing most kids are smart enough to leave them at home to prevent theft). I rarely ever see a kid with a PSP/Vita/DS/3DS, and honestly, the ones who do have handhelds systems are pretty hardcore nerdy gamer types.

My 18-month old daughter thinks the PS3 controller is pretty awesome to run around the house with, but she loves the iPad. Holy crap does she love it, and we don't let her play with it very much.

I don't remember when I saw kids in the gaming age bracket.

getting a used ds and games for it is still cheaper than buying a used ipad. i only see apple trash in houses that have money. however, kindle fires are a more affordable and still a cooler alternative to a nintendo, and i see a lot more of those around. i dont see kids all over the place with tablets, but most parents i know are getting those for their kids as opposed to old and busted handhelds.

I don't see nearly as many kids out (airports, restaurants, etc.) and about playing their pokeymanz on nintendos. They're all pacified by their parents iPhones/Androids or their own iPod touches/etc.

I speak from brown privilege and the iPad 2 I bought for my baby sisters last year was recently replaced by an iPad Mini.

One of them heard of the new "Gameboy" and think it's "cool", but it wasn't for her since it can't play her scammy girl-pandering f2p games, instagram and stream videos/youtube/music (even though it does?).

My friends with kids, none of their kids play with 3ds and especially Vita's. The last time I saw a kid with a ds, was at Pizza Hut in...April. My friend brought his kid and his wife to the place where we watched SummerSlam last month and that kid was glued to the tablet they brought.

New FFXIV is that bad?

Probably a mix of both. The beta I played wasn't bad, and a remarkable improvement in GUI compared to 1.0, but it didn't scream "subscribe to me!" just like 1.0 didn't (and I never even played 1.0, just saw Youtubes of it)

Holy hell at those second week 90%+ drops on JoJo and FF.  that is indicative of some seriously bad word of mouth.

that might be true of Jojo, but that's certainly not the case for FF.

There's been no PS3 version restock after an initial circa 200k shipment and digital downloads have been suspended. This is SE controlled and there'll be no further sales until they fix the server situation (that they've publically apologised for). It's sold out everywhere you go (or at least has been the last X days)

Also - word of mouth is good because, i know - it's a surprise to me too, FF14 is pretty darned good. I know, right? It's so good my wife started playing games on something that's not a portable again.

Jojo though - man - second hand copies at sub 3000 yen one week after and a GLUT of them. that 40/40!

Apparently 3DS first party sales have been great this summer. :rejoice

If you combine physical and digital. :teehee

Quote
According to Nintendo, 190,000 copies of Mario & Luigi: Dream Team were sold in August (combining physical and digital sales), while Pikmin 3 sold 115,000. New Super Luigi U has sold 120,000 combined units across physical and digital.

Nintendo reports that the following 3DS games have sold at least 250,000 combined copies so far in 2013:

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (863,000)
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (739,000)
New Super Mario Bros. 2 (406,000 in 2013, 1.85 million total)
Fire Emblem Awakening (390,000)
Mario Kart 7 (352,000 in 2013, 2.84 million total)
Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity (298,000)
Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D (268,000)
Super Mario 3D Land (265,000 in 2013, 2.86 million total)
LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins (264,000)

Didn't peg NSLU to sell that much, and DKCR 3D sounds about right for what it is. If you had told me a year ago FE would bring those kinda numbers I wouldn't have believed you.

Mario 3D Land still up over NSMB2 is a nice surprise, wonder when (or if) that'll change.

Pokemon XY are going to explode.

I can't tell if America likes FE. Seems like it's more dependent on the game contents itself/marketing (Awakening had a great commercial airing all the time when it came out, don't remember anything for SD or the Wii game.)

Or maybe just positioning? I only picked it up because of great word of mouth and there was nothing else to play that month.

You think internet nerdbases can affect things that much?

I also just realized Awakening was my first ever FE game. Dat :uguu

I remember being slightly excited for SD, but by the time it came out I just wasn't interested (and the art style did seem pretty lame.)

It's a shame FE12 wasn't localized, it's one of the best in the series imo. I'd like to see the next FE regain some of that gameplay variety/balance/challenge that was missing in Awakening.

So what happens when PS4 and Xbox One have fairly tepid sales this time next year?

They also used "Microsoft Xbox" instead of Xbox One.

[Wii U] Splinter Cell: Blacklist < 5k
:dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :dead :deadpos :deadpos :deadpos :deadpos :deadpos

Seriously, this thing is done. Andrex, Radiohead, could you give me even ONE excuse for why a third party should make a game for Wii U? Even the Vita has a small reason for existence by giving indies mild successes and that thing is selling just as badly.

Hahaha, I didn't think it'd do that badly but launch day I saw a ton of people buying the 360/PS3 versions and no one buying the Wii U copies.  :lol

Of course, to defend/spin the Wii U version for Radiohead and Andy: The online is completely broke and it took two patches to fix it (if it is, I can't give a damn about that version to keep up with it) so that harmed it even more.

I'll handle this, Andy. What did you guys expect? I don't know what's up with all these third parties releasing shoddy ports, but if you're not going to treat Wii U customers well, they're not going to buy your game. And when you leave out absolutely critical functionality like local co-op, what do you expect?
