PS2 (January 2001) - 248K
PS3 (January 2007) - 244K
PS4 (January 2014) - 271K
When I see that the wildly successful PS2 was a mere 4K ahead of the PS3, that tells me something about the PS2 numbers. Mind you, I get that it's somewhat difficult to assert that the PS4 is any sort of immediate danger. But I think the crux of the issue is to recognize the difficulties plaguing the industry and why that's bad. Yes, in a vacuum, 271 doesn't seem alarming at all. After all, November and December were great, and there's also a problem of supply at least to some extent (I already argued I don't think it was a major problem, but let's just agree it was a problem). So, by itself, sure, let's say the PS4 did all right.
The problem is that the posted number really isn't something to write home about. The Wii U is bombing, and the Xbox One doesn't seem to be sitting very pretty based on that January drop. If console gaming was still sitting pretty, it would stand to reason that all those people who aren't buying Wii Us and aren't buying Xbones would instead be buying PS4s since it seems to be the console darling right now. And when the current king of the hill -- the perceived clear victor at the onset -- is only posting
that? That's... not good.
But sure, go PlayStation.
