Damn thats dumb
If this game is actually good, i might start doing outdoor stuff more often
Considering how hooked she's been on Pokemon Snap these past few days, my gf will be all over this.
It's a can't lose concept, but the actual screens they showed for 2 seconds at the end looked pretty lame.

All I see are the 151 mons. :trashThey'll likely work their way to include them. It's smart to go with the original 151 Pokemon first because that's what the mass are more familiar with. It's a smart way to grab attention of lapse fans.
c'mon not even Johto or Hoenn Pogeymans?

Gen 1 designs are my favorite, not because I grew up with them but because I largely prefer simplicity in character designs. There's something about the much later entries that kinda misses the mark big time in regards to the designs. Especially Gen 4 onwards.
Gen 5 tried to be like Gen 1 but failed so miserably. A lot of ugly ass designs and the grand majority of them looked over-designed. The good designs (which were actually great but make up very few) did not make up for that terrible generation.
Eh, Voltorb is suppose to disguise as a Pokeball. I can't really fault his design, I think that was the entire point of its existence. I think Poliwrath is fine though.Gen 1 designs are my favorite, not because I grew up with them but because I largely prefer simplicity in character designs. I loved most of Gen 5's designs. A few were ass (the genies were ugly as sin) but I thought it was a good attempt at making new designs out of similar species to Gen 1's. In all honesty, most Gen 1 designs were too simple. They have a lot of charm but if Gen 1 and Gen 5 swapped, Gen 1 designs would get raked over the coals without nostalgia goggles.

Get on your feet and step outside to find and catch wild Pokémon. Explore cities and towns around where you live and even around the globe to capture as many Pokémon as you can. As you move around, your smartphone will vibrate to let you know you're near a Pokémon. Once you've encountered a Pokémon, take aim on your smartphone's touch screen and throw a Poké Ball to catch it. Be careful when you try to catch it, or it might run away! Also look for PokéStops located at interesting places, such as public art installations, historical markers, and monuments, where you can collect more Poké Balls and other items.
In Pokémon GO, you will gain levels as a Trainer, and at higher levels you will be able to catch more powerful Pokémon to complete your Pokédex. You'll also have access to more powerful items, such as Great Balls, to give you a better shot at catching Pokémon. Keep exploring and encountering Pokémon to raise your level!
There are other ways to add Pokémon to your roster, too. If you catch the same species of Pokémon enough times, you'll get the opportunity to evolve one of them. And as you explore, you may find Pokémon Eggs at PokéStops, which will hatch after you've walked a certain distance. When they hatch, you may find Pokémon you've never seen before!
Some wild Pokémon will appear only in certain places near where you live or around the world. For example, some Water-type Pokémon may appear only near lakes and oceans. If you're away from home, be sure to stay alert for Pokémon you wouldn't normally encounter!
At a certain point in the game, you'll be asked to join one of three teams. Once you join a team, you'll gain the ability to assign Pokémon you've caught to empty Gym locations or to a location where a team member has placed one of his or her Pokémon. Like PokéStops, Gyms can be found at real locations in the world. Each player can place only one Pokémon at a particular Gym, so you're encouraged to work with others on the team to build up a strong defense.
If a Gym is already claimed by another team, you can challenge that Gym using your own Pokémon. Using the Pokémon you've caught, engage in battle with the defending Pokémon at the Gym to claim control.
A wide variety of challenges are available that highlight many different categories, such as catching Pokémon and exploration. By completing these challenges, you'll unlock achievement medals that will appear in your player profile. Try your best to unlock as many medals as you can!
A portable device called the Pokémon GO Plus will enable Pokémon GO players to enjoy the game even while they’re not looking at their smartphones. The device connects to a smartphone via Bluetooth and notifies the player about events in the game—such as the appearance of a Pokémon nearby—using an LED and vibration. In addition, players can catch Pokémon or perform other simple actions by pressing the button on the device. Pokémon GO Plus will be available soon. Check back for more details.
An early field test limited to Japan only is planned for Pokémon GO while the game is still in active development. The features, available languages, design, and overall appearance are not final. Please stay tuned for information about expansion of the field test to other markets.
Pokémon GO will be available for download at no charge on the App Store and Google Play. In-app purchases will also be available.
One of my co-workers got in the Beta. She seems incredibly hooked to it. Someone else in the office described it as Ingress with Pokemon.
Pretty happy it's only the good Pokemon in this game :doge
As far as I can tell you have to kinda aim it with your flick
No one wants to argue with you about it, sorry you were too young to catch the golden years

I was trying to do that. Is it bad to bounce the ball off the pokemon? I think I tried just about every throwing option. Getting it kinda close in front, close in back, going crazy with it, beaning the pokemon. Does it have something to do with CP? The Eevee had ?? for CP iirc.

I think you have to wait for the inner circle to get small.
I couldnt even get the game to throw the pokeball. Do you swipe? Tap?
Game is broken on Samsung devices so you can't flick the pokeball, good job idiotsThink I'm on a Samsung. :gloomy

Does this game have any kind of hook besides the brand? Does it even have monetization? I don't remember Ingress having particularly lasting popularity after the first month.
Shit is still not active in Japan. I'm sure it will overwhelm ALL THE SERVERS EVERYWHERE when it does.

Well I just deleted it off my phone until this gets corrected. Was kind of a shitty game anyways, nine times out of ten you can't even get it to load correctly, and then when you finally are able to, all you do is flick a ball at a Pokémon.
There's no need to buy anything as far as I can tell yet.
To be fair, its popularity is insane. I'm sure they'll make enough off the whales to get the infrastructure right

This game is an unplayable POS.
shut-ins (http://www.thecoli.com/styles/default/xenforo/smilies/mjlol.png)
Yesterday, after I purposely went out for a long walk to hunt Pokemon, the game froze on me probably 100 times in a couple hours. I spent more time closing and restarting the app than I did playing. There were at least a dozen instances, probably closer to 20 or 25, when the game froze right after I had caught a Pokemon. The screen just froze with the pokeball sitting there. Restarted the app, and guess what? No Pokemon. If you add up all the pokeballs I wasted on those encounters, it's probably over 100. Are they going to reimburse me 500 coins to buy those back? Probably not, though I may try to request it. I had probably a dozen pokestops fail to give me anything. Just spun the icon and got "Try again later."
Also got a couple "Your item bag is full." Of course they sell you a larger bag for real money. Of course they set an item limit that anyone who doesn't battle constantly is going to hit really quickly. Of course the game doesn't default to giving you pokeballs, which don't count towards the limit, if you can't carry any more potions and shit.
The curve mechanic is stupid as fuck. There are a large percentage of phone screens, mine included, that can't deal very well with the input sensitivity that determines whether the ball goes straight or veers off at the last second like some trolling telepath pushed it away. Good fucking luck if you're using a screen protector. Absolutely no one would mourn the curve mechanic if they removed it. It's very obviously there to make you miss more.
You have Pokemon that aren't even that strong escape multiple times even if you're using a raspberry and upgraded pokeball.
Then they have the balls to sell you 20 for a dollar. This when a shitty Pikachu can easily make you go through 20+ with multiple escapes. Should be 100 for a dollar at a minimum.
I'm probably done in a couple days if they don't at least fix the freezing and the pokestop errors. Simple fix: if the game freezes, you either get the Pokemon, or you get every item you used in the encounter back as though there had been no encounter.
As it is, the whole thing is set up in an incredibly mean-spirited way to get you to buy shit for real money at what are frankly pretty ridiculous prices.
Have they patched that out yet anyways?
Also shame I live in a middle of nowhere, not enough good signals on my road :'(

For the record this is false. Or at least wildly inaccurate.

Essentially Pokemon GO is using an out of date API that causes Google to lie and say the app has "full access" when really all it has is your email and OpenID/OAuth access. Surprise surprise, everyone freaked out about nothing before all the facts came to light.

So is this like the most relevant thing Nintendo has done since the Wii? Everybody around me seems to be playing it.In terms of audience reach, yeah.
how does the game determine what are landmarks? Google maps?
That Meowth... :doge
what is the point of powering up pokemons
The Pokestop thing is really puzzling. How are there Pokestops on military bases and other restricted areas?
Javier Soch and Seth Ortega went to downtown Fullerton on Tuesday hoping to hunt monsters on the new "Pokemon Go” smartphone game.
Instead, the Marine Corps veterans helped police in the Orange County city catch a man who was bothering children at a playground. Investigators later learned the man, identified as Jacob Kells, was wanted for attempted murder by authorities in Monterey County.
“It’s not what we were expecting our day to turn out with,” said Ortega, who is pursuing his associate’s degree in automotive technology at nearby Fullerton College.
“The game, when it loads up on the screen, says to be cautious of your surroundings. Strongly follow that advice.”
Ortega, 24, and Soch, 26, who are roommates in Placentia, arrived downtown about 9 a.m. and played the smartphone game for an hour.
Soch said the experience has not diminished his enjoyment of the “Pokemon Go” game.

Most of it was automated from Google Maps.

Some of the Pokestops are inside buildings so this doesn't make sense. And again, I'm talking about restricted areas that Street View wouldn't have access too. It's puzzling.

Whether it's your local church, an art installation, a public library, or just a big ol' water tower, Pokemon Go has chosen some … interesting locations for its Pokestops and gyms. They're not random, but they're also somewhat scattershot in their placement. One neighborhood could be bursting at the seams with Pokestops and gyms, while another could be a desolate wasteland. So what's the deal? It turns out, a lot of Pokemon Go's designs can be traced back to Google.
While Pokemon Go may be the first time many players have heard of developer Niantic Labs, it's a studio that traces its lineage back to Google (whose parent company is now known as "Alphabet"). Niantic was once part of Google, and its founder and CEO, John Hanke, worked on the technology that powers Google Maps. That tech was used in Niantic's previous game, Ingress. And Ingress, much like a Metapod becoming Butterfree, has evolved - in its own way - to become Pokemon Go.
Much like Pokemon Go, Ingress is a game of geolocation. Players must travel to specific locations to capture portals, which link with other captured sites to form zones controlled by whichever faction holds those points. Hanke and his team chose some of the first portals based on sites with historical or cultural significance, such as The Washington Monument, Big Ben, or longstanding museums.
Other locations were chosen based on geo-tagged photos from Google. For example, you might not have much interest in, or even know about, the world's largest ball of twine (located in Cawker City, Kansas by the way) but the fact that so many tourists take pictures of it and upload those pictures to Google would make it a prime candidate for an Ingress portal.
Many more portals were submitted as suggestions by Ingress players. Hanke recently told Mashable that there are approximately 15 million player-submitted portal locations, 5 million of which have been approved.
Ingress player data has revealed the most popular of these portal locations, and Niantic has turned those into gyms. The less popular (but still active and approved) locations have become Pokestops. "The Pokestops are submitted by users, so obviously they're based on places people go," Hanke said. "We had essentially two and a half years of people going to all the places where they thought they should be able to play Ingress, so it's some pretty remote places."
It can lead to some interesting situations where the landscape has changed over time. I can personally tell you of two stories, each revolving around water towers (look, I live in central Iowa, we don't have a lot of super cool landmarks, okay?).
One nearby Pokestop is assigned to an old water tower that existed during Ingress' launch window, but was torn down by the time Pokemon Go was released. So down the street is a Pokestop pointing me to something that no longer exists.
Meanwhile in Des Moines, a gym is assigned to a water tower stationed outside a nearby mall. That makes sense - the mall is a popular area, and the water tower is an easy-to-see landmark - however, the water tower is surrounded by a tall chain-link fence with barbed wire around the top, and a big "NO TRESPASSING" warning on the gate. Because of this, it's not possible to get close enough to actually interact with the gym.
That is, unless you fool the app by closing it and re-opening it, hoping the GPS signal will think you're on the other side of the fence - a trick I definitely did not do, and do not suggest any central Iowa players reading this try. Unless you are Team Mystic, in which case: we cool.
So if you're wondering why Pokemon Go seems to be telling you to go to church, or the local art installation, odds are that it's actually following in the footsteps of a tourist whose picture is circulating on Google or an Ingress player who suggested it. Maybe they were distracting themselves from a lengthy sermon, maybe it was a good place to meet up with fellow players, or maybe the world has changed since those days, closing off what once was.
I say, make up your own stories for these places. And good luck catching 'em all.
I wish there was more I can do with the game when I'm not out and about. I know the point of the game is to go out and catch Pokemon, but I wish there was a more I can do with the Pokemon after I've caught them. Right now you can only transfer them, power them up, or evolve them. I'd like more things I can tinker with when I'm just sitting at my desk at work.
I also hope there are some "event" style scenarios like maybe a rare Pokemon shows up for a limited time in specific locations. Or a Pokemon trainer pops up randomly and whoever beats him gets a cool reward.
How fixed are Pokemon positions though? I keep seeing things where people are mapping where they find Pokemon but in my experience I'm going to the same places and getting different Pokemon
Q: Should I worry about the amount of information that I will expose about myself by using the app?
A: It’s never stopped you before
Q: Is some part of this game’s popularity among adults deeply, indescribably sad?
A: Yes
I can only imagine the rage of missing with a master ball
Also, I'm pretty sure the nice and excellent is about hitting it in the circle but doesn't necessarily mean anything about the chance of it capturing. Could be wrong

Way more interested in the slowbro pounding that slowpoke from behind
Wtf I just read if you miss you can pick your pokeball back up by tapping on it....
And that you can summon Pokemon with no tracks next to them if you select them
This is "mew is under the truck" playground shenanigans all over again.Indeed. :lol Seriously, between VC release of the 90s era games and a week old mobile game, the latter sure invoked more nostalgia somehow.
Didn't think I'd see it happen again with the internet being a thing.

Doesn't really seem to be using much data for me
Been watching the Pokemon cartoon and bought Pokemon Y because of this. need mah fix
I still have Red, Blue and Yellow. Somehow I never knew there was a Green. It makes sense to me now but for some reason I always thought the original games were only Red and Blue.
ok i love video games and have done countless ridiculous things bc of them but seriously wtf people
Fucking Diablo 3 has MULTIPLE community managers. No pass on this shit.
But, who are we kidding- Fandrex gonna Fandrex from now until the end of time.
Sounds like a common problem. These devs cant just blurt out what they're working on with big daddy (Nintendo) overseeing.
Bungie has the same issue with Destiny. Massive had the same issue with Division.
Fucking Diablo 3 has MULTIPLE community managers. No pass on this shit.
But, who are we kidding- Fandrex gonna Fandrex from now until the end of time.
I think I've said it before, but the thing that scares me most about Pokemon Go is that fact that it's rather easy to tell how rushed it is, that really this is just a step beyond beta. But look at how popular it is. Can you imagine what it's going to be like when they have a system that stays up, they fix the bugs, enhance it to allow trading or battling or release another region? I mean if we're at these levels of hype for what we have? When they fix it it's going to be insane. Of course, if they don't fix it soon they'll lose a bunch of momentum and a bunch of people will leave, but still. It's crazy.
And then they'll add trading.Exactly. So long as Nintendo doesn't take too long to fix their problems this is only going to get bigger.
And then they'll add battling.
And then they'll release a limited-window legendary Pokemon.
And then they'll release Gen 2.
Using "fad" in the same breath as Pokemon is... contrary to history.
Will it remain as big as it is now forever? Nope. But it's probably not going to go away quietly any time soon either.
How long is the P&D thread here, again?
With no major awards shows coming up or sports going on (sorry baseball), Pokemon Go has been a godsend to the people who need to tell everyone about what they're not interested in.
PLZ TELL US AGAIN HOW GREAT THIS GAME IS TASTY
I don't think anyone is playing right now..
That's Dunky?!
That's Dunky?!
Yeah, he's been on camera in a couple other videos; think for his PAX East vlog. Surprised you didn't run into him there. (jk, he obviously attended events around actual games, unlike you :teehee )
(Pokemon Y) The process to evolve Evee to Espeon is fucking annoyingly obtuse since you have to raise the friendship ranking with it to a specific level then wait until you're in the daytime hours and then level Evee up once.Looking this up. If you give Eevee a Soothe Bell, it'll increase the friendship stat by x1.5.

Didn't know that was a thing. :/
I finished Pokemon Y after playing basically nonstop this weekend. I really didn't expect to sink into it as hard as I did. Forgot how much I enjoyed these games.
I want more but I don't want to burn out by immediately playing another right after then end up not wanting to play Sun/Moon when it comes out.

Yeah this game isn't fun. Maybe if it had a fall release, but it's too hot for this nonsense. I would like a game based on this that is an RPG, though.
any word on when they're going to fix the 3 step problem?
When two persons in search of a pokémon clash at the corner of Sunset in San Vicente is there violence? Is there murder?
No iOS version :(
Went to a baseball game with coworkers tonight, half of them spent most of the game on their phones catching pokemon and visiting the pokestops. Several of them even have fucking battery packs to charge their phones because of Pokemon Go.
I'm bored of the game after less than a week.
I caught a Pikachu today!!

A 20-year-old man was shot and killed while playing ‘Pokemon Go’ near San Francisco’s Fisherman’s Wharf, a popular tourist destination along the waterfront, authorities said Sunday.
It’s unclear if the shooting was related to “Pokemon Go,” which has surged in popularity since it was released this summer.
The app uses a player’s smartphone camera and GPS technology to guide him to real locations to “collect” Pokemon, or “pocket monsters,” in real locations. Players point the camera and virtual characters appear against the real-world backdrop. Then players toss a virtual ball to capture that character.
The game has drawn crowds to parks, boardwalks and promenades in search of rare Pokemon. Players have found themselves targets of assailants or witnesses to crimes.
Last month, two men focusing on the smartphone game were robbed and carjacked in Northern California. In Fullerton, two former Marines helped nab a man wanted for attempted murder in Sonoma County. And in San Francisco, a brother and sister were robbed of their smartphones while playing “Pokemon Go.”
Caught a Pikachu this morning.
why are people still playing this?
why did people play this in the first place?
Pokemon GO is the only game that justifies its place on a smartphone. Or rather, my smartphone anyways. Any other game that isn't tap-tap bullshit I'd rather play on a dedicated system.
GO using GPS, AR, constant data connection, local multiplayer stuff, etc. makes it a game that a game system couldn't do.
The IP doesn't hurt either.

I replied to this:QuoteGO using GPS, AR, constant data connection, local multiplayer stuff, etc. makes it a game that a game system couldn't do.
Which is obviously nonsense. Cunt. :bolo
The point being, Pokemon GO justifies itself being played on my smartphone more than any other smartphone game - the vast majority of which are crap, and the remaining few are ones I would rather play on a real system.

How's it working so far? I read reviews that said it was flaky. There was a two week span it stopped working after a Pokémon Go update, but the PoGo Plus was also weird during that time. Outside of that it’s been perfect.
By every measure that matters, Pokémon Go has been a winner. Since its launch, it has almost never dropped out of the daily top 100 downloaded apps in both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store, according to app analytics company App Annie. It has been the top-grossing app in the Play Store this entire week. In two years, according to an estimate by app analytics firm Apptopia, it has taken in $1.8 billion in revenue.
"Even though the mega spending at the beginning has died off, the rate of revenue is still highly impressive," says Apptopia communications lead Adam Blacker. "Where the money comes from is actually pretty evenly split between iOS and Android, which is unusual."
...
But the most impressive indicator of Pokémon Go’s sustained success is how much of their lives people devote to it. To this day, more cumulative time is spent playing Pokémon Go than any other game. It’s not even close: One in five minutes spent on the top 20 games on Android in May was devoted to chucking virtual Pokéballs.
It's a brand-new mythical Pokémon though. :doge

Not thread related, but related to Pokemon so I figured I'd let Andy-kun see it here.

I don't know what that thing in the link is, but it's not Ash.
He also won Orange League (literally 20 years ago this month (https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/EP112)) and Battle Frontier, but those victories like this one aren't really considered as legit as setups with eight gym leaders and an Elite Four...

So in other words: Red was here, Ash is a loser? :thinking
(CNN)For more than 20 years, Ash Ketchum has wanted be the very best -- like no one ever was.
The Pokémon trainer has traveled across the land, searching far and wide, in an attempt to catch 'em all. But in all his years of training and battling, the forever ten-year-old has virtually always lost out to stronger trainers in Pokémon League tournaments, falling short of his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master.
Until now, that is.
In the latest episode of "Pokémon the Series: Sun and Moon," Ash finally wins the championship competition of the Alola League, marking the first time the protagonist has won an official Pokémon League tournament. (Not counting his victory in the Orange Islands League.)
Just finished the Community Day, and in the process of evolving Turtwig into Torrentas. Got about 700 candies to be around 1200+ candies for the grass Turtle. Now give me Trapich community day with a good ground or dragon exclusive move.
With the online league, Team Rocket and enhanced buddies, I feel this game has been pretty well rounded in terms of content and useful item economy.

There IS NO POINT to playing it in Kishiwada, but when I hit Umeda or Nanba, it is like every 10 feet there is some pokestop or gym.

As the COVID-19 pandemic spreads across the world, entire businesses and industries are shifting to accommodate increased social distancing. In the case of Pokémon Go, a game that typically requires you to go out into the real world and congregate around points of interest, Niantic will temporarily change various mechanics to help increase the safety of its players.https://www.polygon.com/2020/3/12/21177754/pokemon-go-coronavirus-habitat-increases-incubators-pokestop-gifts?utm_campaign=polygon&utm_content=chorus&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter
In a statement to Polygon, a Niantic representative said that the studio is currently “prioritizing updates to Pokémon GO features and experiences that can be enjoyed in individual settings.” Notably, the game will be increasing habitats so that trainers can see more monsters nearby while playing closer to home.
Incense packs, which increase monster spawns, are also going on 99% discount — and when they’re active, they will now last an hour.
Incubators, which ask players to accrue a certain number of steps before hatching eggs containing Pokémon, will now be more effective. “Trainers can hatch Eggs twice as fast,” Niantic said.
Finally, PokéStops are dropping Gifts with more frequency. All of these changes are in effect immediately, and will continue until “further notice,” Niantic told Polygon. In addition to these tweaks, Niantic has already postponed its previously-planned Abra Community Day, along with some other real-world events.
“While we’ve made these updates based on the current global health situation, we also encourage players to make decisions on where to go and what to do that are in the best interest of their health and the health of their communities,” Niantic said.

Loving these 10km eggs turning into 5km eggs. Gonna be incubating nothing but 10s this whole time the game is cutting the walking distance in half.

Hilariously, Tripon's Pokemon Go gifts are all coming from landmarks near where I grew up. It's making me nostalgic for driving my old Dodge Dart around those areas... I'll not be more specific, to protect his privacy, but it's sure bringing me back!

Could we get some fucking actual gameplay in addition to that? I mean doing Raids from home is neat and all, but I want to level the 'mons without Stardust/etc.

I tried it out, and it works. One time only tho.
Right now, the only way to earn PokéCoins is to defend Gyms. But since Pokémon GO’s release, we’ve added features that have vastly changed the way you play. In addition, with more Trainers playing at home, we’re looking to provide more ways for you to earn PokéCoins while playing in one place. So, in the future, we’ll be rewarding you with PokéCoins for activities besides defending Gyms. We’ll soon be testing this update only with Trainers in Australia, and it’ll be coming to all Trainers after this testing phase.
In order to balance this new method of earning PokéCoins, the number of PokéCoins earned from defending Gyms will be reduced from six per hour to two. The maximum number of PokéCoins you can earn in a day will be increased to 55.
Here are some of the daily activities you might see. Complete the featured activities each day to receive five PokéCoins!
Make an Excellent Throw
Evolve a Pokémon
Make a Great Throw
Use a Berry to help catch a Pokémon
Take a snapshot of your buddy
Catch a Pokémon
Power up a Pokémon
Make a Nice Throw
Transfer a Pokémon
Win a raid
I couldn't be assed with the Kanto or Johto challenges. Shit like "catch this type of Pokemon that never spawn near you," "send a gift to a friend (that you don't have any of and have like 20 gifts in your inventory clogging space)" just made completing them all impossible.
The half-egg distance is nice, it speeds up the 2km ones signifcantly and makes 5 into 2's and 10's into 5's. Really should just be permanent.
