hogwash. 40 bucks per week equate to about 170 per month for groceries, which is already a good percentage points lower than the average budget for those at the lowest levels of poverty in the country. with a budget that low, you'll only be hitting the instant ramen section of the international markets, and you couldn't even afford the good shit.

/Shrug

. You're going to be living dried beans/grain/frozen veggies life with lots of soup, but I remember being able to snag massive bags of lentils and rice from the Indian store. All the info I could find on poverty line in the US kept redirecting me to Live Below The Line challenged where people try and live at the global line (15USD/week), so I'd like to see more sources on this.

Btw is there something wrong with american supermarkets that you cant buy normal food for a good price?

I buy 95% organic (including meat) and we spend less then 600 bucks on groceries a month for a family of 3 (now).

When I was living on eggs, canned spinach, black beans, bulk oatmeal, and whole wheat tortillas, I was at... maybe $40 a week. In California. And I was getting so much nutrition that my farts were crazy bad.

Yeah dude. Once I got a little more income after that I stopped min/maxing my nutrition-to-costs ratio and my health went back to shit. But at least the farts stopped.

Anyway the biggest issue with eating cheap and healthy is balancing enough diversity in your food to keep it interesting so you don't order out. Eating the same stuff gets old fast, which is totally a first world problem but yeah.

$151 a week is pretty absurd but that seems to include restaurant spending too. One of the other links says the average is $85.50 a week for "make at home" only which still sounds absurd

Maybe that's just the difference between living in LA/NY and the rest of the country though.

It says family spending

150 a week for a family sounds reasonable and works out to around the same math as I did per person

151 is the average of all groups. For "children under 18 at home" its 173

the income brackets for gallup are narrower than the ones from the usda/lobs...

also 151 is for individual adults, not families.
scratch that, i thought you were referencing the young adult number

our average per week is probably 50-60 a week for just grocery store stuff, but that's just for two people who rarely (once a week maybe) eat breakfast. so two meals a day i guess.

it's mental how because people don't value the ritual hassle of the restaurant experience, takeaways and street food vendors have capitalised on it by basically charging the same prices.

the next food van that tries to charge me £9 for a burger and chips gets their tyres slashed.

I was saddened when I heard that Putin (well, whatever mayor it was tbh, but he was taking directions from the big boss) cleaned up my home town and banned all street food. I didn't even care if it was made from dog or rat, shit was good.

when Massimo Bottura was coming up, people in Italy talked mad shit to him, saying he doesn't cook real Italian food. I think putting close minded constraints on food is silly.

lol, my wife makes me a frittata in a cast iron pan almost every day for lunch

They are delicious;  different cheeses, types of peppers, mushrooms, etc. mix it up

tell her to get into tortillas espanolas, much better than fritatas imo

i'd argue the way italians use wheat flour traditionally is fancy a f and super innovative. pizza bases so soft they melt in your mouth but also have just a little crispy bite on the crust, the perfect conduit for toppings, pasta so good it's all you think about for days. i know it's not a diss per se to say it's not fancy, but it is actually super fancy especially if you put it into a fine dining context. the days of french dominance are over. welcome to the age of spanish, italian, chinese, scandinavian, japanese, lebanese, ethiopian, korean etc etc. french dining hasn't innovated in decades, the last great french food writer was an american, despite a lot of the revolutions in modern cuisine being inspired by techniques innovated by the french they are suffering because of their adherence to tradition. something italy and spain are doing an amazing job of eschewing/updating.

Typically eat at home Sunday-Thursday and we tend to go for something "cheap" on Friday, then maybe splurge a bit for food from someplace nicer on Saturday night.  Rarely ever get delivery and have never had groceries delivered- there's a nice grocery store around the corner so never thought about it doing it once.

I don't "get" restaurant delivery services either- I'd rather just go pick it up myself and save some cash.  Guess it makes sense if you don't have a car.

The other day my boss bought me lunch at work.  The place I got the food from was like next door to our building so I figured I'd just go there and get it- instead someone from Door Dash brought it by.  This was like a one minute walk, if that.  Felt weird, lol.
