Title: Blu-Ray/4K UHD Talk Thread (+DVD/VHS/Betamax/Laserdisc/D-VHS/CED/VCD/8mm etc.)

Random thread for me to post about upcoming releases, stuff I'm watching, whatever.

Bad movie, but I like this cover art that looks like Candyman is about to fight The Warriors.

Nothing beats 70/80's sleaze in 4K. Imagine watching this as high as Stephen King was when he said that. :rejoice

Getting these this month:

Never heard of this 1992 film, but it's got my boi Tony Leung and apparently had an oscar nom and the 4k transfer is supposed to look great? Curious to check it out.

Never seen this, but boxart is amazing. Might not have got it if the boxart wasn't so good.

Haven't seen this either. Like Beatles music so curious about it. The boxart is pretty terrible.

The reviews for this are pretty great and I've never seen it. Might give it a shot though worried it'll be too old and hokey.

Also my Roger Rabbit from Black Friday sales showed up. Definitely looking forward to giving it a spin. Feel like it could look real good in 4k HDR. I hate steelbooks generally, and didn't get this one, but I gotta say the best buy exclusive steelbook cover looks so much better for Roger Rabbit.

Is this a good movie? No. But is it worth watching? Also no. But is it $12. Yes.

Candyman 3 has some very big 90's Direct-to-Video energy, with slightly above soap opera level acting, cinematography, and effects. Donna D'Errico was laughable as Candyman's white great-great-granddaughter Caroline, as were the over-the-top white racist cops that served as secondary antagonists. Also the kills were all pretty boring. It's roughly on par with a later Hellraiser sequel.

Fantastic movie. I missed picking up Shout Factory's release before it went out of print, so I was happy to see Kino Lorber putting out this new 4K remaster. Invasion isn't quite the goated 50's horror remake that The Thing or The Fly are, but it it's still great and this was a great release.

Time for a double feature of sleaze, with The Toolbox Murders and Giallo in Venice. First, Toolbox Murders, it's a bad movie. It looks bad, it feels bad (man), but there's a charm to these shitty slashers that were made before Halloween. There's was no blueprint yet, they were just fumbling around in the dark. All they knew was that the floodgates of tiddies and gore were wide open, and they were going for it.

It was nothing compared to the sleaze level of Giallo in Venice, though. I've seen great giallos, but this is not one of them. I've also seen some sleazy giallos, and this one tops them all. It had hookers getting stabbed in the vagina, it had a husband emotionally manipulating his wife into cucking him again her will while he jerked off, the same husband convinces his wife to have public sex with him while another guy pulls out his (possibly real human?!?) penis and starts jerking it. Late in the film, when a woman get her leg sawed off while she was still alive, that barely even registered at point. It wasn't a good movie, like a at all, but holy crap dude, they didn't hold back. The print also looked like garbage, probably because the only uncut print of the film was discovered in the attic of a Portuguese dentist's office. I always love seeing "Don't blame us, this is as good as it gets!" disclaimer when you put in a Blu-ray. :lol

Love this movie. Rick Baker with the goated werewolf transformation scene of course, but it's also just really funny and charming. I love David and Jack's scenes together as Jack increasingly disintegrates, while still maintaining his deadpan humor. There's also just a lot of little weird touches that make me laugh, like Frank Oz's scene at the hospital, or the final shot of David's crumpled body smash-cutting to a do-wop version of Blue Moon over the credits, and then there's a special credit wishing well the marriage of Princess Diana and Prince Charles (after earlier in the film David calls Prince Charles a taco to try to get a cop to arrest him). Arrow's release looks great too. Some of the previous Blu-ray releases have been a bit scuffed, but this one is fantastic. I know the 4K release is coming out in a few months, but I don't really feel the need to upgrade. Plus, Demi-kun bought me this disc, so now it's a family heirloom.

Got The Piano today and it's really odd that Criterion has zero consistency with their 4K releases. Some are cardboard foldouts, some are traditional clear plastic. Very odd.

Also I found out that The Lover is the wrong Tony Leung! Even the review I read said "Tony Leung (Chungking Express, In the Mood for Love, Lust Caution, Shang-Chi)" but apparently this is a different Tony Leung and I've been fooled. So now I bought some random movie with nobody I know directed by nobody I know. Guess I'll watch it and find out.

Haha, well he did star in Wong Kar-wai’s Ashes of Time, so close! Let me know what you think. It supposed to be highly regarded, but the subject mater is a little….ehhh…..”French”.

I haven't bought any yet, but from what I've read, they're all pretty much reference quality as you'd expect, but none of them are exactly 4K showcases. Uncut Gems is the only new release, and the rest are like Citizen Kane, Menace II Society, and A Hard Day's Night.

A giallo with Hammer's gothic horror sensibility. It's got a sweet old castle, a family curse, and a lot of suspicious characters lurking about. And a gorilla, for basically no reason. It adds nothing to the plot and only serves as a red herring for people that are familiar with Murders in the Rue Morgue. It doesn't commit the murders, nor is it suspected by any of the characters in the movie of having committed the murders. It also features Charlotte Gainsborough's parental units, Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin (although Serge plays a pretty minor role). It's a decent movie with a decent plot, decent acting, and a decent twist,  it's all very decent although nothing outstanding.

I wasn't that impressed from the bits of I skimmed of their first release with Mulholland Drive, but then all their classic stuff has looked incredible.

The Red Shoes is absolutely reference quality showcase. The colors are gorgeous. Citizen Kane & A Hard Day's Night are really impressive showcases of B&W with HDR plus the extra detail.

Otherwise, the usual tons of good extras and nice books of essays. Mulholland drive has almost no extras because Lynch  :'( I don't even think it has chapters.

Yeah, that's just David Lynch being weird. I remember as far back as the first DVD release, he demanded that there be no chapter breaks (and also refused to do any extras).

Would assume so. Even the non-4k BD looks great with this restoration.

Yep. Lynch is like "this is my film, it's my art, it speaks for itself, on to the next project!"

Lynch is great, but there are some downsides to his style of art.

From the most Borian name of all-time, writer/director Dick Maas, it's Amsterdamned! I hadn't seen this movie before and I was kinda worried that maybe he shot his creative load with the title, but this movie was actually pretty awesome. It's a slasher movie, but from the perspective of the super cop that is on his trail. He's kinda like Dirty Harry, but not really, he isn't a loose canon and the chief doesn't take his badge, he just drinks on the job and hits on women and acts cool and everyone loves him.  8) It's got some pretty nice action scenes, there's a high speed car chase through the streets of Amsterdam and then later a high speed boat chase through the canals. It's a fun little movie. And it even has a sweet 80's theme song from a Dutch girl group called "Lois Lane".

ANIME!

The Project A-ko Blu-Ray has a pretty cool story behind it. When Discotek first announced the Blu-Ray, the original film elements were thought to no longer exist, so the plan was to use a Domesday Duplicator to scan the film directly from a laserdisc then use AI upscaling technology on that to create a new 2K master. It was disappointing, but it was the best possible solution at the time. Then Robert Woodhead launched a Kickstarter to remaster the MADOX-01 OVA, and when he contacted the film lab in Tokyo that was storing the film prints for MADOX, he found out they also had Project A-ko stored in the same location. He let Discotek know and they scrapped the plans to use Domesday, and restored the 35mm print instead. And it looks fantastic, btw.

1st and 3rd UY movies came out on Blu-Ray recently. (The 2nd one came out several years ago.) I'm not really a big UY fan, but started watching the movies because of Mamoru Oshii. Even though he only directed the first two, some of the later sequels are interesting too. The first one "Only You" is honestly pretty dull, though. It takes Lum and Ataru's one note relationship and stretches it as far as it can possibly go. Lum loves Ataru, Ataru loves chasing every girl but Lum. This movie adds the alien princess Elle, who Ataru accidentally promised to marry 11 years ago, but then forgot about. So yes, now there are two alien princesses that want to marry Ataru, and Ataru is all to happy to ditch Lum and rush off to an alien planet and marry another alien princess, sight unseen, rather than marry the alien princess he has at home. It's the "mystery box could be anything, it could even be a boat" gag, stretched out to a feature length film.

"Beautiful Dreamer" is by far the best of the series, and one of the best anime films ever made IMO. Oshii wrote this one and had full creative control on it (which almost caused mangaka Rumiko Takahashi to veto the whole thing); and ironically improved everything by pushing Ataru and Lum to the sidelines, ditching all the other aliens and outer space plotlines, and giving more of the focus to the background characters. As the title "Beautiful Dreamer" implies, it has a definitely dreamlike quality to it (literally, as you find out eventually) with the students at Tomobiki High School trapped in a time loop and repeating their days over and over in an idyllic haze. Unlike the first movie, you can definitely see familiar touches here that you'd later seen in Ghost in the Shell and Patlabor.

After the second movie, Oshii dipped out from the series because he wanted to do more creative work, and he was replaced with Kazuo Yamazaki on the series and movies. "Remember My Love" is not even close to as good as "Beautiful Dreamer", but it is better than the first IMO. Lum and Ataru are back to be the focus, but it does try to develop them somewhat beyond just Ataru being hornt up and Lum being mad at him. In this one, Lum gets (accidentally) cursed by a witch to never be with her beloved, which ends up getting Ataru turned into a pink hippo. He gets depressed because he thinks Lum won't want him anymore now that he's a hippo, but she assures him she still does. He eventually turns back into a human, but then Lum is kidnapped by a space wizard. At first Ataru is happy because he can horndog all he wants, but eventually he realizes he isn't happy without Lum. It's not a very focused film, but it's not bad.

Also, as I've said before, I love an 80's movie with a cheesy theme song that has the name of the movie in it, and by god if "Remember My Love" doesn't have one, and in English no less, by Japanese-American pop singer Stephanie.

That Zatoichi collection of 25 films for $108 is super tempting. It's just so hard to spend money on physical 2k discs when there could be a 4k release in the future (these were 35mm so they could rescan them at 4k when it's financially feasible).

Plus when the fuck am I going to have time to watch 25 movies.

Still pretty tempting just because it's cool looking set and Zatoichi is cool.

Local video store was doing a Buy 2 Get 1 Sale for President Day, and someone had just traded in a bunch of Shout Factory Blus, so I bought a big stack. The Blob, My Bloody Valentine, and Drag Me to Hell were the main three I wanted to add to my collection. Ghost Ship is one that I was interested in revisiting, because I just remember it being critically slammed at release, and I was curious how it played 20 years later. Ginger Snaps for the same reason, except I remember it being highly praised at the time. Alone in the Dark (not the Uwe Boll version, I'm not that hard up to revisit bad aughts horror movies yet) stars Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Donald Pleasence so it couldn't possibly be bad. The Burning is a movie I've been meaning to watch for a while, I've heard it's good. Tales from the Darkside, I just really love these 80's anthology horror movies like Creepshow. And Terror Vision/Video Dead I just picked up because it's OOP and was cheap.

And here's some more of my pick-ups from the past few weeks.

The Warriors theatrical cut is finally getting a Blu-ray release via the Aussie label, Imprint. Confirmed to be Region Free as well. Even though the Director's Cut of The Warriors isn't as egregious as something like the Star Wars Special Editions, the additions always annoyed me. Watched the Scarface anniversary edition the other day. A really nice restored 4K image although the quality of the sound effects and dialogue is a bit lacking.

Soundtrack by Giorgio Morodor as good as ever though just like the pacing of the film :lawd
It's essentially a Morodor music video starring Al Pacino.  8)

Bought Arrow's Shawscope Vol. 1 and also Come Drink With Me. Bout to get Shaw'd up.

Watched Dirty Ho and King Boxer. Dirty Ho had some great physical comedy, with a character that's a kung fu master but he's trying to hide the fact that he's a kung fu master, as he "accidentally" dodges, weaves, and fends off attackers, while making everyone else think he's just a bumbling buffoon. In another scene he claims a brothel girl is his bodyguard, and uses her arms and legs like a puppet to defeat the titular Ho, who somehow doesn't realize what's happening and thinks he's getting his ass kicked by an actual ho. The second half gets more serious and less interesting imho, but it's still got some decent fight scenes.

King Boxer is more serious and brutal and it has some amazing fights. It's about two orphans that are adopted and raised by a kung fu master, one leaves to get training from a better kung fu master and returns stronger than the first brother, but the master believes that the first brother Chihao has more potential of the two, and sends him to train as well with the other master. The other master mocks him and tells him his kung fu sucks and he can stay and work in the kitchen, but he keeps training until the master finally recognizes his ability, and tells him that he was training him to have humility before teaching him his ultimate technique, the Iron Palm. His adopted brother gets jealous that the master taught Chihao the Iron Palm instead of him, so he goes to a rival school for help to get revenge. A group of them catch Chihao alone and beat him up and them smash his hands so he can never use the Iron Palm again, but spoiler alert, through sheer force of kung fu will, he heals his crippled hands and kicks major ass. Lots of good fights, very bloody, the dude's hands glow when he uses the Iron Palm, and also it has the Kill Bill siren. 5/5 movie.

Arrow really went all out for this True Romance 4K special edition. Was only like $30 at Amazon by the time of release but you get a big fat Criterion kinda book, poster, postcards, fake tattoo. Plus there's a ton of features on the disc too and the transfer is supposed to be great.

One of my favorite classics, nice to see it get such a cool edition.

FYI Criterion 50% off sale is up. So 4k discs are all $25 on Amazon.

Didn't realize Shaft released! So grabbed that and Le Cercle Rouge. I think I now have every single Criterion 4k release outside Uncut Gems (great movie, but not really interested in owning modern flicks atm). I have a problem which is going to get very expensive over time...

I just really like the books & extras on Criterion discs. So much fun learning bits of film history I never knew even as a film buff growing up.
Also helps having disposable income atm.

TCM2 has been OOP for a hot minute and the Creepshow 2 LE was just actually really limited. I have the regular edition, but the LE comes with a comic book adaptation of a planned segment that wasn't filmed. The Unholy isn't rare or anything, just something I'd like to have.

I keep forgetting that Disney occasionally releases niche catalog titles exclusively to their shitty Columbia House-style movie club. They put out The Black Cauldron, Something Wicked this Way Comes, and Watcher in the Woods last year. I'll have to get at least Watcher in the Woods off Ebay, I loved that movie.

Yeah, I've never seen Watcher in the Woods and kinda curious so I ebay'd it after reading your post. Also I read Something Wicked This Way Comes like 3 years ago and the movie was out of print so I just saw some youtube clips of it. Wouldn't mind checking the whole thing out.

Also pet peeve, but it pisses me off how when reviewers write about older films that use major spoilers in the first line header that shows up in RT. I was checking the reviews of Watcher in the Woods and basically

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The review titles already spoiled that the Watcher is an alien and it's a sci-fi film.

Also that apparently they ran out of budget so the big blue alien isn't in the movie visually or something and the ending is a mess.

Still will give it a watch. But not that first time review titles haven't heavily spoiled shit. Really annoying.

Annoying thing is definitely stuff like that Infernal Affairs being:

New 4K digital restorations, with 5.1 surround DTS-HD Master Audio soundtracks

Like I understand it's 99% likely a licensing thing, but still sucks they have new 4k transfers sitting right there and the only way to watch them is a downsampled 2k transfer that gets re-uppressed to your 4k TV.

Watched Inception last week, hadn't seen it for a while. Still holds up really well including the visual effects and soundtrack, despite no Atmos or DTS:X.
The Tom Hardy character is still kind of ridiculous though, he can fight off an entire army by himself  :lol

This week the 4K CE of Edge of Tommorow should arrive. I'm looking forward to that one, they've redone the soundtrack with Atmos.
I remember that they toned down the bass from the original cinematic release in later digital and physical releases but lately in these new 4K versions such mistakes have been fixed (like the fucked up colors in the Matrix), so fingers crossed they restored the 'oomph'.
Even though I didn't really like No Time to Die the steelbook was too cheap to pass on so that should be here soon as well.

Do you mean there's some 1080p version based on a new 4K master? As there's an Ultra HD release box set coming to France (https://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0B6XVTFG9) in October btw.

Edit: should mention that some Euro only Ultra HD releases lack English subtitles. Not a problem for anyone ripping the disc to PC since they can be muxed from other sources but would be an issue if playing from a regular player. Always good to check the official details.

I learned about UK's Second Sight films with Dog Soldiers. They seem kind of like Mondo but for BDs?

Basically Shout Factory released a version in the US and Second Sight released a version in the UK. Both transfers are identical (Shout Version has a few second audio pop at one spot that Second Sight caught in QA and fixed), both have the same disc extras, but second sight version has kickass packaging and comes with a 150 page physical book of interviews, essays, making of info.

Grabbed that and their LE of The Witch. Pretty nice physical stuff and good cover art. Dog Soldiers is my favorite Neil Marshall film and favorite Werewolf movie.

Would've got the Drive LE from June 2022 but it's out of print. Will keep an eye on their releases going forward.

Worth noting that Dog Soldiers was 16mm, and The Witch was 2k digital intermediate and Drive was 2k digital intermediate, so it seems like some/most?/all? of their 4k releases are 2k upscales vs native 4k stuff. But in these cases these are still the best versions these films will probably get and the physical packaging and extras in the LEs make them standout.

Also worth noting that regular BDs are region-locked so USA BD player won't play UK BDs, but 4K BDs are region free and Second Sight is careful to make sure all the on-disc extras are replicated on both the 4K disc and BD disc so if you import it and can only play the 4K disc you still get all the on-disc extras.

I saw Arrow's Pitch Black 4k from 2020 was on sale for $18 so I looked up if it was an upscale since it's from that 2000-2018 era where 95% of films made used digital effects and ended up with 2K digital intermediates so the 4ks are just upscales with no new detail.

Discovered that the 2020 remaster of Pitch Black got the legit as fuck masterclass treatment where they actually went back to the 35mm camera negatives and scanned a 4k print and then overlayed the digital effects which were 2k over it. So the 4k release has 1080p looking effects (which isn't too bad, 1080p still holds up well and effects are less noticeable) but the actual image otherwise like the people and environments and objects are true 4k rich detail. Apparently it's a really nice looking transfers especially with the HDR.

Pretty awesome. Best Vin Diesel movie got best treatment. Disc also has like a million extras and the 2d anime Dark Fury on it as well. Looking forward to rewatching this.

Wall-E Criterion 4k

Criterion collection striking a deal with Disney seems like a big deal.

Honestly in terms of film history I’d rather they have gotten Sleeping Beauty or Snow White. But if you’re gonna pick one Pixar movie, Wall-E is a good choice.

Criterion announced their December slate and I think it's the first month since they started releasing 4K discs to not include a single 4K even though two of the films have new 4K masters/restorations.

Or maybe they're splitting up announcements these days in batches like how they added Wall-E later. Dunno.

I've got too much of a 4K backlog at the moment to catch up on, so I'm holding off on their 4Ks starting with Blow Out until the next 50% off sale and then I'll catch up.

Finished it. Yeah, the daytime stuff at the start and end are like reference quality for older films in 4k. The rest looks great with close-ups and lit scenes looking super sharp and detailed, and some scenes a bit grainy/soft and special effects being a mix depending on how they did them. But pretty much A++ transfer work.

It's too bad the 15 min longer Director's Cut isn't in 4k with this release. Just the Theatrical Cut.

Picked up these two, one incredible eye candy and the other really not.

Frozen Planet just looks :delicious

Ghostwatch was shot on video for early 90s TV so looks bad by DVD standards, let alone Blu-ray, but it's a really nice SE for a classic that's only been on OOP DVD for years.

Criterion 50% off sale at Amazon/B&N time again.

This time includes In the Mood for Love 4k which I guess just came out this week. FYI, the reviews for that say yeah it's the same stuff that was in the World of Wong Kar-Wai box from 2018ish except at higher resolution and double bitrate. No HDR/DV. Not that much reason to upgrade if you have that box probably.

*edit* Actually reading reviews of the 4k for In the Mood for Love, apparently it's almost indistinguishable from the exiting 2K BD because DNR kills the extra grain/detail that would've been gained  :-\  Gonna cancel my 4K order and just pick up the WKW 2K set next time it's $99. Doesn't seem like any 4K releases will be much of an upgrade over that set.

I suppose that's one way to see it, though tbh it's the French release which had poor DNR, while the German and Criterion releases preserve the grain present in the new master, even the existing 1080p BD.

Yeah, the Criterion ones are realllllly close. Like if you need to zoom in 200% and squint carefully to slightly see the difference...ehhh. With no extra HDR and no extra audio/supplements, it just seems kind of a waste in terms of any upgrade and a waste of a slot in Criterion's monthly 4k lineup.

WKW & Christopher Doyle's extremely cinematic visual approach of these films seem like they'd be prime candidates for 4k HDR restorations rich with grain, detail and colors. But...at least this release isn't it.

In comparison the Criterion Wall-E 4k which uses the same exact video transfer as the existing and way cheaper Disney release has about an hour or so of new supplements and a new Dolby Vision layer on the transfer. It's still a minor upgrade there, but it's something.

Also as much as I'm a big fan of Criterion since the LD/DVD days, they've been fucking up a bit on quality control in their very small pool of 4k releases so far and it's a little worrisome.

Citizen Kane - the 2K included BD has a greyscale fuck up 30 mins in (they did a replacement program; plus it doesn't affect the 4k disc)

The Beatles A Hard Day's Night - the 4k disc is legit missing 3 shots during an end sequence  :lol the 2k version included is fine (they did a replacement program, I didn't bother sending it back because it's 3 shots)

The Sound of Metal - At certain parts in the plot the main character uses sign language. In the Amazon streaming release the sign language dialogues were subbed. In the Criterion release there's no subs at all for the sign language parts so you just can't understand what they're saying. (Criterion hasn't responded to fans about this and if they will do a replacement program)

Idk, you've got that stuff and this In the Mood for Love transfer, weird stuff like Night of the Living Dead which looks GREAT and is a fantastic disc rich with detail but also doesn't have HDR which is a bit weird when a lot of B&W films of the time do and the HDR works well for the highlights, Criterion is just being a bit more iffy than usual on this first year of 4k discs. Hopefully they'll work out the kinks because otherwise the quality of their releases is stellar.

Found myself in town today and checked out the fire sale in HMV. Surprisingly good prices on Arrow stuff so grabbed these two.

Exorcist III is £15 everywhere I checked online, and the Hellraiser box set is OOP and was £40, so I'm happy with those.

Speaking of Arrow stuff, started getting into the world of region-free 4k BD imports due to the good USD exchange rate currently. Saw one of the Arrow releases that hasn't made it the US Arrow branch yet was Videodrome, which I've never actually watched but always wanted to since it seemed up my alley. Got that. Seemed like a good transfer:
https://ultrahd.highdefdigest.com/108061/videodrome4kultrahdbluraylimitededition.html

Though weirdly enough mine has a different cover wtf?
This is what I ordered straight from their store:
https://www.arrowfilms.com/4k/videodrome-4k-ultra-hd-limited-edition/13927972.html?autocomplete=productsuggestion

This is what I got. Contents are all the same outside the worse cover.

Apparently they had two versions and this is called the "original art" version and for whatever reason is more sought after. Weird. I think the new art cover is way better. In the end it's the same contents so who cares, just an uglier box on the shelf.

Also ordered that Police Story Trilogy box that Joe got on the last page. Haven't seen those in forever. It's on the slow boat from UK and should get it sometime in the next month.

Never heard of it. What's its deal?

British TV movie from 30 years ago, presented as a legit live broadcast about an investigation into a haunted suburban house. It was a pretty innovative format for back then and picked up a cult following over the years because it was never broadcast again due to tons of people thinking it was real, including one guy who killed himself.

I just watched Wayne’s World in 4K and not only did it look surprisingly decent but they also restored Stairway to Heaven to the “no stairway” joke. No more royalty free generic riff — he now starts playing Stairway to Heaven, which I don’t think has been the case since the original theatrical release.

https://www.sonypictures.com/movies/spc30th4kuhdcollection

I got this because I'm getting tired of these 4k limited edition boxes selling out and then they never release the movies individually. Plus I really like Run, Lola Run and makes me miss Tom Twyker at his crazy ADHD early era (I gotta watch that Babylon show he did one of these days) and I either like or haven't seen the rest (pretty even split for me, haven't seen Orlando, Still Alice, Volver, or Call me By Your Name, just watched The Celluloid Closet for the first time last night).

What surprised me the most about this box is how barebones it is. Like those Columbia Classics editions that are like $80-$100 for six movies are fucking nice sets. Big bulky package, huge high quality book with essays on each film, each movie is like 2-3 discs with 4k, BD and special features. Digital copies of all the movies. The Columbia Classic boxes are a good deal imo. Plus they may become pretty pricey collectors editions. Volume 1 from 2020 (the only one I missed out on) is going for $999 on ebay (or $220 with like 30 people still bidding on it).

But this Sony Classics box, which is double the price of those Columbia boxes at $200 (but 11 movies instead of 6), is really barebones once you open the weird shape box. There's a tiny little 30-40 page booklet that's got a single essay about the studio of Sony Pictures Classics, then the individual moves you open up and they only have a single 4k disc each. No BDs, no digital copies. It's also a very oddball collection of indie stuff. It definitely comes across as a budget release by some passionate people at SPC who wanted to get some of the smaller stuff like SLC Punk, City of the Lost Children and Run, Lola Run out in new 4ks.

I'm not sure if there's any new special features. It feels like they went out and licensed all the previous special features from previous BDs and that's about it. Like The Devil's Backbone has most of Criterion's special features (and I just bought that Criterion 2k disc not too long ago :|).

Anyhow, dunno if I'd recommend it to anyone other than hardcore indie fans of these films with too much money sitting around. I think it's a good pick of titles and from the couple of reviews of the box the quality of the transfers are quite good but a lot of these were very budget titles with simple visual palettes.

The selection of movies seems kind of random(?)

If they wanted to go with Sony pictures 'classics' purely from a quality standpoint they should've included the likes of Leviathan.
If they wanted to go with films people remember, where is Black Book, The Raid, Layer Cake or MOON?

Yeah, it's a unique selection, but I also find it kind of more interesting because of how oddball it is. They're all great? films (I dunno anything about Orlando). I think the theme is "first breakout hit from a director"

Like you've got:

City of the Lost Children - First major fan favorite of Jean-Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen would've been the weirder pick, Amelie more the mainstream favorite pick)
The Devil's Backbone - Same for Guillermo Del Toro's collection (Cronos maybe more indie pick, but Devil's Backbone more wider known)
Run Lola Run - Best Tom Twyker film, though also first breakout indie hit

But then you've got:

Synecdoche, New York - I think this got included because Phillip Seymour Hoffman is gone and this was his last big indie flick. It's a pretty inaccessible Charlie Kaufmann movie compared to like Adaptation, which would've been a better pick. Though honestly that Netflix one he did a few years back (I'm Thinking of Ending Things) is probably even less accessible. I've only seen Synecdoche, New York once and it basically flew over my head and didn't care for it that much outside PSH's performance which was really good.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon - This isn't "indie" at all, it's also probably the biggest mainstream hit and well known film of Ang Lee's career. It's also the only film in this box that had a separate release already in 4k. It's a pretty weird entry in this set, but I think for Sony Pictures Classic, this is one of their biggest hits they've ever had and they felt like they should include it since the box is supposed to represent the last 30 years of the studio. Plus they probably wanted some Asia film representation since everything else is Euro or USA.

Then you've got:

SLC Punk - Which is a weird pick. I don't even remember the movie outside Matt Dillon's performance. But it's become a bit of a cult favorite and as someone that grew up around this era, locale and this scene I'm all for punk movie rep in here.

The Celluloid Closet - I'm not well versed in what documentaries SPC has done over the last thirty years, but seems like a good pick as it's a very quality documentary on an important subject of gay representation and film history.

As for the rest that I haven't seen:

Volver - I remember when this came out people talked about it a lot, especially the visual style and acting. Had some Oscar noms. Seems like a good pick.
Call Me By My Name - same thing. I haven't seen this but I really enjoyed Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake. Looking forward to seeing Bones and All.
Still Alice - I know absolutely nothing about this, but Julianne More won the oscar this year for it.
Orlando - Yeah, don't know anything about this, but the tagline of Billy Zane in period piece getup living for 400 years with Tilda Swinton sounds interesting.
Also Orlando came up in 2020 which is probably when they would've started on this project so that probably is why it was included:

Quote
Orlando, both the film and the novel, was the primary inspiration for both the 2020 spring exhibition of the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the 2020 Met Gala. The exhibition, entitled "About Time: Fashion and Duration", was specifically inspired by the "labyrinth" scene in Orlando, where Tilda Swinton runs through the labyrinth dressed in an 18th-century gown before she reappears dressed in mid-19th century garb.[25] Using that scene as the initial inspiration, curator Andrew Bolton took "Orlando’s concept of time and the manner in which she/he moves seamlessly through the centuries" to "trace more than a century and a half of fashion, illustrating how garments of the past influence the present."[25] Although the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of the Met Gala, the opening of the exhibition itself was postponed until October 2020.

As for your suggestions, I haven't seen Leviathan or Black Book, so I've got no comment on those. The Raid is amazing, but this is a generally family friendly-ish set. Feels like an ultra-violent film like The Raid wouldn't fit. Layer Cake would've been a fantastic pick, I agree. Breakout hit for Mathew Vaughn and maybe Craig (not sure if he had big films before this). Moon...hmmm, I found it kind of disappointing and Duncan Jones hasn't really gone on to an impressive career, though Source Code was good. Also has the Kevin Spacey is blacklisted factor. Wouldn't be a bad pick, but I can see why they would've skipped it.

I had to psych myself up a few times before I finally tackled it, but I'm glad I did. So much of Inland Empire has stuck with me. Lynch transcended the inherent limitations of his choice of camera and delivered a frightening and surreal drama as only he could.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ij_6WIvU244

Lynch himself was very bullish on digital video right when George Lucas was, oddly enough. Lynch in particular exhalted the freedom from letting the camera just run, or hitting stop and getting another take right after. So much of Lynch's career has been constrained by the purseholders, and that mostly comes down to the sheer cost of 35mm. You can even see his frustrations anew when trying to get more footage for Twin Peaks: The Return some 11 years later.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yzH4CDmZ3h8

In that light, it's no surprise he didn't direct anything between Inland Empire and The Return. The money guys just wouldn't let him.

Lynch's excitement over digital video democratizing storytelling is infectious. I had the same enthusiasm when shot-on-iPhone films started taking off half a decade ago (of course, Lynch would prefer you don't watch films on a fucking telephone (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKiIroiCvZ0)).

Interesting, Arrow Video is bringing out Linklater's Boyhood 4k in UK in March. Wonder if this is another one where the US rights are tied up with Criterion like Videodrome.

I actually picked up the 2K Criterion BD of Boyhood last 50% off sale since the digital intermediate was 2.5k and didn't expect a noticeably different 4k anytime soon. Still haven't watched it yet. Been meaning to watch it for years since I like Linklater but the length's put me off. Figured picking up the Criterion disc would motivate me to finally watch it.

It was a Disney/Paramount co-production. And speaking of metal, the dragon's name was Vermithrax Pejorative (!) and it looked pretty badass for 1981 lol.

I didn't realize Oldboy has a nice 4K UHD in the UK by Arrow. I saw they were selling the Vengeance trilogy, but only that was 4k. Don't really want to pay $25 Euro + shipping, but maybe when it's on-sale I'd pick it up.

Assuming this is like Videodrome where someone in the US has the rights so no US release.

Also, Arrow UK is releasing this in May. Good times, but wonder about the USA release.

It's a great set, although IMO Supercop is a lot better than the first two. I think there's an individual release of Supercop 4K coming out, might be worth just picking that up if you don't want to splurge. It's a good movie. Classic Jackie Chan.

Yeah, I have the set but haven’t watched them yet. My understanding from reviews is that only Supercop got a restoration and looks great. The other two are based on old transfers so they look olddd.

Japan haul (https://i.imgur.com/AiznKYK.png) Last time I watched High and Low was 13 years ago and have waited for a cinema-level release since. Probably my fifth time seeing it. The impeccable layout of each shot and the noir turn in the last half :lawd

Also bought GitS blind, having seen no footage. The music and artful, dialogless sequences were delightful. Cost me a stupid amount though since it's OoP (Japan pls) :doge

Some uncompressed screencaps:

The Lighthouse (first two brightened slightly to bring them up to comparable levels)

Such a strong artistic vision. The photography, lighting, sound design, somehow making starkly different vignettes flow together; the mixtures of reality, fantasy and gaslighting. Def re-watchable.

I've never seen any of them after II because the reviews I read of them made them sound baaaaad. I guess after I get this set I'll watch 3/4 since I will own them.

Though I hear the new Hulu one with the female Pinhead was decent, so I really should watch that one of these days. I feel like Hellraiser1 is one of the most influential/interesting horror stories. I mean the whole God Hand in Berserk are straight out Cenobites. And "I have such sights to show you" is ingrained in cultural references.

What I really need to do is read Barker's short story that Hellraiser was based on. I've read some Clive Barker but not sure if I ever read that one.

H3 & 4 aren’t great, but they are the best of the sequels until the reboot and I do enjoy them mostly based on Bradley’s performance. All the DTV sequel are just increasingly awful. The Hulu reboot is pretty solid. I would rate them H1 > H2 > Reboot > H3 > H4 >>>>>>>> the rest.

Hellbound Heart is good, and it’s short, it’s only like 100 pages. The sequel he wrote about 10 years ago, Scarlet Gospel was terrible but almost worth reading just based on how bonkers and stupid it was. :lol

That’s exactly why I loved Scarlet Gospels. It was like Barker was possessed by an edgy and horny teenager :lol

“And then Pinhead the Hell Priest fights Satan and he’s HOT!”

Preordered the Arrow set in any case. 1 is a 10/10, 2 is great, 3 isn’t awful and I’ve never seen 4 but you might as well complete the set of the theatrical releases that Barker was involved with.

There's a thread on Blu-Ray.com about Disney pulling out of physical media distribution to Australia and how they've done the same thing already for New Zealand, Italy and various parts of Asia.

Obviously UHD is just a sliver of overall sales and that would be fairly unsurprising but it's a concerning sign given it's all physical in such countries.

Not a great outlook for any hoping for more Fox releases if this spreads.

Yeah, definitely feel like down the line physical may just be indie labels with their $40-50 special edition releases for UHD.

I mean they do a good job, but those kinds of labels have limited output and are pricey.

The physical market’s starting to remind me of the Laserdisc days, where there’s a solid but small enthusiast market, token support from major studios, boutique labels doing really nice but expensive special editions, and you have to be willing to import some stuff because it only comes out in Germany, Japan or wherever.

It has downsides (price, availability) but also upsides, as you’re seeing labels like Criterion and Arrow able to get major studio releases again, which they couldn’t when the studios could print money with repeated DVD special editions.

I’d also say the standards for video transfers have gone up because the remasters aren’t being done under studio mandates to scrub all the grain because everything must look like a modern digital production. I’m regularly blown away by how good cheap 80s shit looks on 4K Blu-ray.
