The FGC being a little seedy is part of the appeal, but for the most part, it's still just a gaggle of your typical nerd set.
I think the controversy is more that creeperboy basically said the fighting game community cannot exist without sexual harassment, which is a pretty goofy thing to say. The mainstream gaming press and most people outside the fighting game community don't think very highly of the scene and are always looking for reasons to crap on them, and, well, this was a pretty good reason.
I heard him say this on the stream and, if I am remembering his point correctly, he was doing a very poor job of illustrating that razzing players is an inherent part of competition. The general sentiment is agreeable to a degree, but of course, there's a point where that sort of stuff can go over the line, and Aris knows this seeing as how he's not running around calling other players distinguished black fellows—which, face facts, is a pretty damn effective way of getting people off their game, Xbox Live is there to prove it—he just has zero consideration for how certain behavior toward women can be degrading up to the point where he sees not doing it as coddling them.
I don't think his views are representative of a majority of the FGC and it's unfortunate that it's been painted that way, but it's good that some of these turds are being held over the flames for the shit they do, and if it means we'll see less of it in the gaming community in the future or more accountability, all the better.
