we gonna pretend like Prodigy wasn't top 5 from 95-97? Hell you could take it to 2000 if you want.

Outkast>Gangstarr>Mobb Deep>Showbiz and A.G.

I swear you mirror many of my hiphop opinions. I gladly take it to 2000. Murda Muzik and HNIC were  :whew

Then Jay burned his soul with the summer jam screen and he hasn't been the same to this day...still puts out quality music but far from the level of his prime lyrically.

Good to see Show and AG mentioned too....Goodfellas is one of my favorite albums ever

Saying Mobb had no influence is absolutely ridiculous. How dare you question P's trendsetting, look what he brought to the table.

Well Prostate P is right about one thing: conscious rap was pretty trash in the early aughts, especially production wise.

Bore-Hop consensus on Mobb Deep vs Outkast for the best rap duo of all times?

Old school mobb deep innovated the queens sound and influenced quite a few people.

But Outkast helped create a whole new style.

Plus Outkast's first album is a must have in anybodies collection....Mobb Deep really you only need Shook ones II.

Eric B and Rakim are NOT underrated. Rakim is regularly considered one of the GOAT MCs by everyone who matters. Paid In Full is one of the most undisputed classics out there.

Some youngings will only talk about Jay & Nas, sure. But Eric B & Rakim will always matter.

Despite having the same status among rappers, DJ Polo & Kool G Rap probably count more as slept on. Too many haven't listened to Rags to Riches.

If you're over 30 and not a stan? Sure.

Am_I_Anonymous:

Most of the people here are under 30 so you should take our word for this regarding our generation of hip hop fans. Proportionally, a decent amount of people are fairly aware of Paid In Full and it's impact on hip hop. People use it as a symbolic album for the shift in lyricism and rapping between the golden age and the gangsta era. When people make big pastiches of classic album cover art, it's there. Conversely you would probably not see some of what people are bigging up right now, Super Tight by UGK, Comin' Out Hard by 8ball and MJG, Das EFX' Dead Serious, Kool G Rap and DJ Polo Wanted Dead or Alive etc.

infact i might say that Paid in Full and Straight Outta Compton might be the most recommended hip hop albums from the 80s.

What are you even saying? Das Efx was my time, so was Kool G Rap...etc.

I lived it... you listen to it.

I'm saying among people younger than 30, Paid In Full isn't some hidden gem or underrated like you said it was. People who listen to hip hop tend to be aware of it, the same way they are of say, Illmatic or 36 Chambers or The Chronic. They know exactly how good it is, and by extension Eric and Rakim.

Ah, perhaps here yes. But in personal experience most of them either hate on or don't know guys like Biz Markie (as seen here), Rakim (that God), Pete Rock, etc.

In fact I had a guy who works for me matter of factly tell me that Drake is as good of a rapper as Biggie. Which is kinda.....idiotic.

Honestly I don't even consider Eric B & Rakim a duo since Eric B was more of a muscle man. Marly Marl and Large Professor produced most of that shit. Whereas Mobb Deep is a legit duo considering Havoc produced most of their shit.

Same applies to G Rap and DJ Polo...

It wasn't a comment RE: the quality of RTJ. Just that the type of person you were describing (younger, less appreciation for that specific era) might lean more toward RTJ because of recency.

Xen is doper than I hoped it would be. Definitely the type of album that forces you to reevaluate everything you've heard recently. Still trying to form better thoughts around it but I'm in love.

Arcas composition and song structure and just general musical sensibilities remind me a lot of Amon Tobin. That's one of the biggest compliments I can give, I consider Amon a genius. And Xen is better than Foley Room and ISAM, the work it most closely resembles.

Being honest it's too early to say Xen better than Foley Room, but my snap reaction is that I enjoy it a bit more. Feels like its individual tracks have clearer intent and direction. While Amon was really toying with how music is made in and of itself, the first half of the album is kind of...mechanical? Like the project forced him into certain directions with songs. Xen feels more organic, more meaningful beyond the craft. I "get" the frame of mind behind the music more if that makes sense. Just a loose comparison either way.

Horsefish tho

I'm a huge fan of Amon too. I'm ten minutes into Xen and can confidently say I like it better than Foley Room, which I love. Still not sure if it's topping the SC:CT album, but this is amazing.
