Yeah but production duties didn't stop El from being a beast before  :hitler

Though I should probably accept that that CoFlow and Def Jux eras were both 10+ years ago

production is better than RTJ2, el's raps are better than RTJ2

I wish I didn't listen to this leak though. the hq is a bit below what the CDQ will be so I'm listening to these tracks thinking "oh man this will blow me away much harder on Tuesday when it officially comes out"

Love it. Killer Mike gets sharper and sharper as time goes on, and it seems to wear off on El-P. Production wise it's a great balance between the last two El/Mike projects. RAP Music seemed a bit too outside of El's comfort zone in the sense that he dipped pretty far left into southern-style production and hadn't done much of that before. His catering to Mike's sensibilities made it feel a little pandering to me, though I liked the album a lot. RTJ1 sounded a lot more like El's solo production, but a little less wonky/experimental, and RTJ2 similarly sounds a bit more stripped down than his solo stuff, but also a bit more relaxed and jangly. My only real criticism is that it sounds very much like what you'd expect it to sound like, which isn't even a real complaint. I guess what I really mean is Run The Jewels:Run The Jewels 2::Robocop:Robocop 2

This would be accurate analogy for RTJ1-2 if Robocop 2 was better than Robocop 1

This is so much better than the first RTJ. I've never spoke on it, but I'm one of those people who thought El-P's rapping ruined the first one. RTJ2 tho? He seriously stepped up. And the production! :noah

RTJ was just weird, they ironed out the kinks for this one. EL-P didn't sound comfortable on the first one and neither did Mike.

Mike sounded good overall on the first RTJ imo, but he wasn't fully adjusted to production. R.A.P. Music sounds like a southern Bombsquad project to me, and Mike was comfortable on it. Imagine Killer Mike on every C4C track...he'd be dope but sound out of place. Likewise El-P sounded uncomfortable on the up tempo, more aggressive tracks on RTJ1.

Whereas on this track they've turned it up to 11 on aggression, and El-P switched up his flow keep up. I'm impressed.

Nice RTJ article in Rolling Stone

Quote
Mike wipes the moisture from his eyes with both hands at once. He tells a story about having to pick up four and a half ounces during a drought. "And I saw my grandmama van at the church, and I just pulled up in the church and I said, "Lemme go say hey and drop off some money." She said, "Stop. Just sit with me." And I sat with her and the preacher. But man, he just said, "Wherever you was going, man, you weren't going to make it back from." For the next fucking six, seven hours, my grandmother wouldn't let me leave her. But this motherfucker kept calling me to pick up his dope… And I knew then that I was supposed to be gone… that day."

that reminds me, Blockhead was on Mike Eagle's podcast a couple weeks ago and had some funny insights into how Def Jux worked. Apparently Block played El a few party fun action committee songs when they were chilling one time, and el was like "I'd put this out." And he did! Hearing shit like that makes Def Jux demise even less surprising.

Sidenote, the beats on All My Life, Lie Cheat Steal and Early make me wonder if it's possible El could get tapped for some pop co-production. I think all three have Boots on production, so maybe that influence is what I hear. Either way, it's a long shot, but it doesn't seem impossible

no lie that shit almost always make me throw a project in the bushes. Still haven't listened to that last KRIT mixtape due to having to re-tag everything. The worst case of this was Hus' last project; can't think of the name but it starts with two super dope tracks (Higher and For The Record). Atrocious tagging...but the project was too solid for me to hate.

holy fuck this song has the WORST hook of the year - in fact the worst hook I've heard in forever. This is clearly not mastered. Must be a leak or something.

At this point the hand wringing of Kendrick "yelling" boils down to bullshit. Kendrick sounds fine on the beat, he's not even "yelling" more than Jay Rock is. Confuse tones brehs. Good verse.

song is bad
