I'd bump Masters of Illusion up 3 spots. I thought Keith and Motion had a good chemistry and Kurt LACED that album.

Man fuck dame soooo hard. Ski has always had so much heat and what did he do with it? Could have had 2 more pilot talks by now.

Would sacrifice a gaf poster to hear ski produce something for hov that got touched up percussion wise a little by someone. no id, maybe kanye.

Explain that situation for me? I don't follow Currensy that closely but I've heard he's being held back by Dame somehow

Dame helped Ski out by providing studio time and might have signed with him, I'm not sure. Regardless when Spitta split from Dame, Ski sided with Dame. Not in a "Spitta's wrong, Dame is right" way but moreso "Dame's doing xyz for me so..."

Now Dame is firmly in the bushes, Ski and Spitta can move on like gentlemen.

Ski actually has some dope drums but they're often reduced on record. His youtube and instagram feature various videos of the live drummer he has. Dude sounds great. I agree Hov would be perfect over some of Ski's new shit.

I just feel like the production value of hip hop has went WAY UP but the heart behind the spitters has went WAY DOWN.

Ski's strengths are the atmosphere he puts together, and the things he does with strings. That's why he suits hov and curren$y so well. When it comes to drums to percussion he's whatever though.

allow me to be cynical, all you like is boom bap percussion :hitler

Ski is a great producer but i never liked him for the drums.

Though :whew
Joe Black is pretty dope. I saw Ski's band live a couple years ago :whew

Most of Ski's drums are live drums, similar to Black Milk. They don't knock as hard obviously, but I think a lot of it has to do with the type of beats people choose. He has knocking beats drum wise, they just aren't the ones dudes rap over the most.

Probably shouldn't take it too seriously since it's like an album of throwaways but that Drake isn't noteworthy. Dude constantly rhyming the same or borrowing that Migos flow/Travis Scott vocalizations. Meh.

I'm assuming you mean 'primo or quik in 1996'? Primo has been pretty awful for over a decade and putting Quik on the table as 'this is what rap should sound like' is just baffling given how his last few albums have approached Lil B level stream-of-consciousness at points

New ghost is ok so far. Honestly I just haven't felt the x factor from this or 12 reasons to die. donno.

Anyone else listen?

I'm liking it so far. Not sure if its better than 36 Seasons but it's good.

He's still better than many of his aging peers, but he's definitely slowed down a bit on here and 12 Reasons/Seasons. Maybe he's holding back for the sake of the orchestral themes of these albums?

I was feeling that Ghost on my first listen but then gave it a couple more and... idk it wears thin. I initially found the instrumentation to be dope (especially the interludes) but then you realize there's not a lot of variation throughout the album. Sounds a little too homogenous and missing that signature BBNG funk. As for Ghostface, the guy sounds tired to me. He's decent for the most part, but is usually overshadowed by most of the production. No notable presence, no intimidation to match the sinister mood. Seems like a missed opportunity, since I forced myself to enjoy it on repeated listens but it gets too boring.

Ghost sounds energized to me, but the verses are rather basic outside of a few spurts. There are no bad verses IMO, but overall it just feels like retreaded territory. Production wise I really like it. The bass is dope, I love the few tracks that have horns, etc.

It's a cool project but feels like an EP. Worse yet it feels like half a project. Like a few more months, more verses, maybe some dialogue samples, etc would make this a memorable project.

Really liked 36 Seasons but it got tired pretty fast. I think these narrative albums are cool but ultimately negate what I always found most interesting about Ghost: his abstract lyricism, wit, and humor. Instead of just going off he ends up tied to a specific topic or theme. Let Ghost be Ghost.

The best hip hop concept albums tend to allow a lot of narrative freedom instead of "this happened, and then this happened, and then this happened." I think of De La Soul Is Dead: a radio station playing all types of shit. Little Brother's first two albums do the same thing. Or A Prince Among Thieves where all types of shit happens. All those albums have multiple tracks that stand out completely on their own.

Whereas 12 Reasons To Die and 36 Seasons retreat a lot of the same territory and there really isn't a moment of randomness. Like, Ghost chilling at the park watching people pass by. Give me that over "Ghost is betrayed by x" again.

He's not wack, he just doesn't do much for me. I should've realized this years ago when I listened to Boy Meets World and had no motivation to go back to it.
