Been on a DOOM kick recently and realized that I hadn't listened to KMD's catalog properly.
Mr. Hood was pretty good (as good as you can expect an album made by rookie teenagers in the early '90s to be).
But Black Bastards tho
It's tough for me to fully describe the savagery of this album. The Sub Roc beats with ZLX's rhymes make this an underground classic. I think it surprised me so much because it was such a diversion from the previous record. I mean, within the first couple minutes, ZLX is talking about his brand new .38 that's about to collect the rent for the month. The glorification of drugs, alcohol and robbery make this such a dark album, especially for young fellas (but, for some reason, makes me love it more).
This is also the project that I can start to see DOOM's emergence in the lyrics, specifically talking about his self-perception as a 'maniacal villain.' I can only imagine the influence this group could have made on hip hop had Sub Roc not been killed.
Sorry to rant on an album that's over two decades old, but this shit had an profound impact on me.
