Kids on the Slope was really good. Final ep was kinda odd imo, but I still enjoyed it.

I also caught up with Gundam Unicorn. All I have left for now are Mardock Scramble and the new Berserk. I'll look into other anime once I'm done with these.

Looking up at those GiTS designs, they're all pretty terrible honestly.  GiTS can be good, especially SAC, but the designs for the main character have always been kind of lol

Maybe somebody can get Shirow to stop drawing weird wild wet west horse-man porn and create something new for once.  GITS is from 1991.

To be fair, Shirow created Ghost Hound and Real Drive within the past 5 years, both of which were pretty good.

I've been watching a lot of random stuff recently:

Hell Target

It's basically an anime version of Galaxy of Terror or Event Horizon, where people get killed in horrific ways on this planet called Inferno II and there's some serious demon stuff going down. There's also a random sex scene for some reason.

Demon-Hunter Makaryuudo

Dark-fantasy plus horror and some backstory about how people from the demon world need to subjugate humanity so that they can something something. It was hard to make sense of because the subtitles were poorly translated. Doesn't really offer much that other dark fantasy series from the 90's provide, also it's just 30 minutes and that's all that was ever made of it. The only thing that really stood out where the character designers, courtesy of the same guy who worked on Project A-ko and Cat Girl Nuku Nuku.

Elf 17

An ultimately inconsequential bit of scifi/comedy, but one that succeeds because it has fun characters and doesn't take anything that goes on seriously. I really liked the part early on where it has dozens of crazy alien designs. Not much to say, really, it's fun but there's just not enough of it [one 30-minutes OVA].

Lupin III - Castle of Cagliostro

Pre-Ghibli Miyazaki movie, need I say more?

I would say new Mokoto lacks the "oomph" the her previous designs had, still like it though.

And yes JoJo is great. The music, Joseph playing dead. Also I saw the first episode of Inferno Cop a while back, it wasn't half bad.

That was more horrifying than Gyo and Uzamaki combined.  :fbm

I like the Q&A part where he answered the question about whether his wife was mad about A-ko's eyes being totally white in the manga, and he said overall she wasn't as mad about the manga as you might expect.  :lol

It's great, but the last episode felt like something out of Dragonball Z, where everything happened in like five minutes, yet it was a 20 minute episode.

But it looks like things are going to pick up next week.

Since I'm back in Japan and have easy access to the video store's massive anime catalog, I keep thinking I should rent something and enjoy it while I can. Current plans have me back in the USA later this year, so I have between 2~10 months. I liked Ranma 1/2, Giant Robo, original Dirty Pair, Evangelion (though I couldn't watch it without translation), and Ghibli stuff.

Where should I point myself first?

Did anyone here listen to the old Animevice community podcast with Firehawk from GAF? That podcast ended awhile ago but most of the members have started a new podcast:

I listened for a bit this morning and the audio quality seems fine for a new podcast (one guy needs a better mic though). It was the only anime podcast I regularly listened too.

Genshiken is getting a new series based on the Genshiken Nidaime manga.  Basically, Genshiken The New Class.  Old characters still show up from time to time but it's mostly new (primarily female) characters.  The manga gets into all sorts of unusual business compared to the older animes.  I mean, not that those weren't unusual either.

Mecha Anime For People Who Like Characters That Aren't Whiny

Patlabor - Slightly unhinged, perhaps, but mostly just ordinary people doing an honest day's work as public servants [even if they are not well thought of by the public and generally cause accidental collateral damage]. Mostly a light-hearted franchise, especially in the second OVA series. The 3 movies are generally much darker and more serious minded, basically Mamoru Oshii being Mamoru Oshii. Good for cleaning a palette dirtied by emo pretty boys and half-naked lolis.

The Big O - Without getting into the minute details, this is basically Japanese Batman [who happens to pilot a giant robot]. The story centers around Roget Smith, a suave playboy who helps people with problems and usually resorts to using his giant robot when things inevitably get out of hand. Highlights include lots of standalone scifi stories, a retro artstyle, and a soundtrack that's just spectacular.

Gurren Lagann - A series that perfectly encapsulates what first drew people to Gainax all those year ago, but without a whiny emo lead. It's loud, it's vibrant, it's totally over-the-top. Aside from the 27 episode series, there's also two recap movies.

Dai-Guard - The English tagline was "Officer workers saving the world," which is a pretty good summary. The three pilots of Dai-Guard aren't anyone special, they're not even military, they were three people who were picked by a corporation to watch over a giant robot that was built as a marketing gimmick years ago. Unfortunately, giant monster appear and they're the only people that know anything about piloting the robot. The leads are likable, ordinary people, with the main pilot being an excitable guy who just really loves giant robots.

Escaflowne - Someone got their shoujo in my mecha! Yeah, that's what this one is, it's a giant robot series set in a weird fantasy world and this girl gets pulled from the real world into the fantasy world and falls in love with this wild guy who pilots a giant robot [and this other really handsome guy that maybe also piloted a robot, I can't remember, anyone he was SO HOT]. Anyway, it's a Shoji Kawamori x Yoko Kanno joint [with Shinichiro Watanabe doing storyboards and Kazuki Akane handling direction], so you know it's gotta be good. And it is really good. Stay away from the movie, though, since the whole reason you're interested in this list is to get away from the emo.

Martian Successor Nadesico - The main character is reluctant, but I wouldn't call him emo. He just wants to be a cook, not a giant robot pilot. He's also an anime love, who regularly watches show-within-the-show Gekiganger 3, which is a clear homage to the giant robot series of the 70's. It does have its more series moments [especially in the sequel movie], but it's generally a much more light-hearted affair than certain other giant robot shows, and the oddball crew is perfect for rooting for.

Mobile Fighter G Gundam - This is not the Gundam you're familiar with. This is over-the-top, ridiculous Gundam, made abundantly clear by the giant robot that rides a giant robot horse that is actually piloted by a real horse. Not to be taken seriously.

Star Driver - The most fabulous mecha anime ever made.

Macross Plus - It's the prototype for Cowboy Bebop, thanks to Shinichiro Watanabe direction and Yoko Kanno score. Or Top Gun: The Anime, either one is fine. Or both. There's some emo-ness related to one subplot that deals with a rather serious subject, but mostly it's about flying really fast in a jet and a psychotic pop idol AI. You heard me. The animation and music and both top-notch and it's just 4 episodes long, so you can breeze through it pretty quick. Macross knowledge isn't required at all, so you can jump right in.

SDF Macross - The quintessential space opera. It's got drama, it's got romance, it's got action, it's got a pop idol who uses music to end intergalactic war! It's serious without becoming "War is bad because people die!" that Gundam tends to use fairly often. The American version [Robotech] has entirely different music and because that's the version I watched as a kid I can never watch the original version because of how "wrong" it feels. This is the show to watch if you want to see a giant space battleship transform into a giant space mech that can blast away a billion enemy ships with one shot of its megalaser.

Megazone 23 - Well, it really has a lot less mecha action than most of the other animes I've listed, but it does feature mechs. That aside, Megazone 23 is, in a nutshell, the 80's. That's not an exaggeration. Big hair? Sure. Wild clothes? Yessir. Neon? Uh-huh. Delinquents? Definitely. Tons of sex for no reason? Of course! Scifi action? You know it. Motorcycles? Lots of motorcycles. Each of the 4 episodes was handled by a different director, each of whom has since amassed a rather impressive resume. It does have lots of teenage angst, though, but less of the "woe is me, for I am an unloved teen" and more "LET'S SMASH STUFF BECAUSE THE WORLD TOTALLY SUCKS."

Oh no he is'nt.

In the beginning he kind of acts like a normal kid would. Scared, but yet excited about his robot. He needs a push from his bro after all he is still a kid.

After a certain incident yeah he gets pretty down, but here it actually makes sense and so I doubt most will find it annoying.

Simon from Gurren Lagann is the biggest emo kid on the block though
Oh no he is'nt.

In the beginning he kind of acts like a normal kid would. Scared, but yet excited about his robot. He needs a push from his bro after all he is still a kid.

After a certain incident yeah he gets pretty down, but here it actually makes sense and so I doubt most will find it annoying.

After that Simon is nothing but awesome.
My opinion is different from yours. He's a bitch the entire first arc and the second arc consists of him being even more bitchified by being a plastic copy of a better man.
Did we watch the same Gurren Lagann?
