The TV series aired before the main plot of the manga had even started, that was the big problem with it. And the TV-sized budget doesn't look so hot in retrospect. I mean, it's not terrible, no, but I don't see any real reason to revisit it now that the OVA series is complete.

Finally watched the last 7 eps of Iron-Blood Orphans. That sure was a rough ride. I like it a lot though, the way the plot didn't stick to standard tropes in the first 13 eps and last 13 eps was nice. Middle was kinda tropey with a few parts, but I can't remember the last Gundam series that didn't fall apart. Probably SEED, so 2002ish, so yeah best Gundam show in 15 years.

The more I think about it, the more IBO feels like what would happen if GRRM wrote a Gundam story.

To be fair, Tomino was wiping the floor with his casts of characters as far back as the 70's.

Vague Spoilers Ahead

Eh, I'm a huge Tomino fan and this series was not very Tomino at all. Tomino is just crazy unpredictable random character deaths out of nowhere. Most of the time there's little impact because it's so random AKA Matilda-san and just WTF.

The story of IBO and especially

is far more simliar to a GRRM tale. GRRM often writes about idealistic heroes and you follow them on their adventure only to see that realistically idealism and heroics often don't mean shit before real world practicalism and underhandedness.  In a GRRM tale a practical villain often beats a heroic hero, which is shocking to the viewers as it's so against the standard trope of the protagonist and embellishing heroic traits.

This season is shaping up to be pretty good so far:

-Kakegurui [super-weird high school gambling show with crazy faces]
-Made in Abyss [character designs from a kid's show, but it's a fantastic production with a really good premise]
-Princess Principal [steampunk alternate-history London highschool girl spies, very good looking production]
-Restaurant to Another World [an ordinary restaurant for some reason is connected to a bunch of doors scattered around a fantasy world, laid back and solidly made show that doesn't try to do too much]
-Centaur's Life [centaur girl anime, a slice of life high school show with animal girls that goes off on tangents about racial discrimination, domestic terrorists, and time travel to the Warring States period]

There's a few other interesting looking shows that haven't aired yet.

We cut this one off after a few minutes.  My wife couldn't stand it.   :lol  Will try again if it really gets that wacky.

There seems to be a number of "weird n' wacky slice of life" shows this season.  Another one to watch is Youkai Apato no Yuuga na Nichijou, about a high school student (of course!) who moves into an apartment building inhabited by ghosts and other weird spirits.

I liked Castlevania which isn't really anime but I guess it goes here under white anime. Dialogue was pretty snappy, some good fight scenes and surprisingly faithful to the games. Direction is sadly mediocre and gives that straight to video feel along with worse voice direction than dubbed anime which makes no sense since it was made in English, but the pros outweigh the cons and I'm on board.

Been watching another new show this season, Vatican X-Files. Well, the actual name is Vatican Miracle Examiner, but I'm just calling it like I see it. Anyway, these two priests get sent from the Vatican to investigate supernatural stuff to see if it's a miracle or not. It's so melodramatic and over-the-top and legit bad, but I love it. I mean, it's got immaculate conception, crying Virgin Mary statute, stigmata, devil worship, and some old priest dude getting his skull caved in. And that's just the first episode! Reminds me of another, somewhat similar anime that I really liked called Ghost Hunt [it had a pretty similar setup, except the mains were ghost hunters] and, of course, X-Files.

Also, oddly, the VO who plays one of the Vatican priests also played a Catholic priest in Ghost Hunt.

Been watching the following animoo from this season (and earlier):

-Restaurant to Another World: "Fantasy slice of life" might be the best way to describe this.  Charmingly wacky.

-Youkai Apato no Yuuga na Nichijou: Another of the growing trend of "weird slice of life" shows.  The last episode centered on a ghost kid and his dog.  When they showed the backstory of how they died...man.  The feels.  :'(  Felt almost out of place given the humorous slant of everything else.

-Hajimete No Gal: Not sure about this one.  It's chock full of bad borderline-hentai scenes (mostly fantasies playing out in the main character's head) and bad dialogue.  I read a bit of the manga before this came out and it was actually kind of charming in a way, being more about the virgin high school loser-type who gets a 'gyaru' for his girlfriend and keeps expecting too much from her and the way the situations play out is kind of funny.  The gyaru character is also clearly inexperienced herself and is just listening to shit her friend tells her to do, much like the protagonist does to his buddies. The anime version changes this up and instead just makes the main character look like a total horny little moron who takes everything his virgin friend tells him to do too seriously and looks like a loser every time instead of just being inexperienced.

-Gamers!: This is a show about a high school loser, with no friends and bad social skills, who likes video games.  Probably the most realistic depiction of a character type ever, lol.  He is approached by the hottest girl in school, who naturally is into games and oddly all over him, and he goes to the club and then...decides not to join.  Uh...?  The next episode then focuses on another character who used to be a big gamer nerd, but changed his image to be "normal" in high school and detests the main character, but winds up befriending him and playing games with him.  The girl from the first episode is demoted to dumb stalker status and keeps spying on the main character.  It's so fucking dumb and goofy, but I want to keep watching it anyway.   :P  This show also must have Arc System Works and Atlus as sponsors, because besides the fake games shown like a CS: Go clone, there's also footage of Guilty Gear Xrd and Persona 4 Arena in the game.

-New Game!: Another slice of life anime (from a season or two ago) about a girl, fresh out of high school, who starts working at a game company as an artist.  So let me get this straight- she skipped college and went right into game development, and the company hired her even though she has no experience and didn't even know how 3D modeling software worked.  Um?  Besides that, the entire company is (of course) staffed by 20-40-something women and everything is super pleasant and cheerful.  And yet...my wife and I sat there enjoying the four episodes we watched last night.  :lol  It's so "dur hurr" but in a good way.

-Dragonball Super: This multi-universe tournament arc is some straight-crazy-awesome shit.  Last ep had the female saiyans from universe 6 power up and start fighting.  Pretty cool thing to see, especially the timid girl who transforms into what is essentially Broly and fucks everyone up.  Then the clear "most powerful" dude, Jiren, pops in and just swats her away and everyone else gets the fuck out while Goku gets ready to fight him.

I swear animu can be so fucking unsatisfying at times...

fucking 62 episodes and still zero romantic development between kenshin and kaoru :goty

only at the very end of this manga do they get married and have a kid, but that also is weirdly unsatisfying

there's no romantic affection show, basically

i mean what the fuck is up with that!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH JAPAN

hajime no ippo does the same shit

what's that girl's name, kumi? her and ippo still haven't kissed afaik

HOLY SHIT HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON

this is why it was so satisfying to watch his and her circumstances, the romantic stuff developed normally, kissing ensued, etc

i guess i should watch that again

but yeah romantic shit in anime/manga is fucked up

these are shows for preteen boys of course they're going to have terrible romance you dummy

Since most of the new anime is shit this season (you mean like every season? lul!) I'm just watching all the Studio Ghibli movies on Blu-Ray. My Neighbors the Yamadas is the only Ghibli movie not on Blu-Ray, and GKids has acquired the rights to release it along with most of the rest of the Ghibli catalog from Disney, so it seems like a good time. I've seen most of them before, but there are a few I haven't. I watched Pom Poko for the first time the other day. Ball sacks are funny, I don't care who you are, and Pom Poko is like Fern Gully if the fairies just started bashing the construction workers with their scrotums.

Even though I'd never watched it before, it made me nostalgic for growing up in the 80's and 90's, when kids were bombarded with liberal, environmentalist agitprop. :lawd
