My team at work officially voted to work from home today. Our corporate office has been WFH since earlier in the week, but we are in a building maintained by a different arm of the corporate machine, and that arm is unable to shut down (gotta keep filming those movies!) so the office remains open. However we were the only people on our floor there today, so it just sort made sense I guess.

The plus side is that it was the day they restock the snacks and since no one else was there I got a ton of free protein bars!

They still haven't decided to shut down our main office yet, despite all this concern...

...but they did just tell us that everyone on my team is now 100% remote until further notice.  Might only be a week, might be for a few weeks, but-

:rejoice

Sleeping in later every morning and not having to deal with ATL highways on Mondays and Tuesdays
:lawd

I don't understand companies talking about wfh like it's a 2-3 week thing. Or places like Disneyland shutting down for 15 days.

This thing isn't going to suddenly be gone in 3 weeks. I think realistically anything closing or companies doing wfh to make a difference it's going to have to continue for 6-12 months.

China's quarantine last 50 something days and they got their shit together a lot faster than the US is going to. No one has any idea how long this will last and some scientists have said it will die down some and possibly comeback again in the fall.

Anyone or anywhere that is thinking this is a simple 2 week ordeal is in for rough times.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/mar/13/herd-immunity-will-the-uks-coronavirus-strategy-work

Boris Johnson's strategy is to "cocoon" at-risk populations and just wait for 60-70% of the population to get the disease and recover, at which point the UK will develop "herd immunity". And this is the country we're excluding from our EU ban.

holy fucking shit :dead

At best a Fabrizio Corona colony, since it's where they grow our TV-thots population.  ;)

I already worked from home 100% of the time and hate people, so my likelihood of being exposed to the virus is going to be limited to grocery store trips, which I will cut back on heavily in the near future. Atlanta has gone full idiot and people are hoarding food and especially toilet paper (wtf) so I don't want to venture out to the store until that shit calms down in the next couple days. Gonna play Langrisser and watch porn, so basically a normal life for me.

this can't be true, otherwise, why would boris johnson encourage his whole country to get infected? surely one of the richest countries on Earth would have ample access to experts and every strategy would be vetted to the fullest. i encourage you to check your sources.

This is not true at least according to the doctors I've seen on youtube.  There is some variation in the virus but not enough for it to be considered different strains.

From what I'm hearing, the reason for all the local quarantining is because they want the virus to spread as slowly as possible. My brother said that in his hospital, they were talking about how maybe 5% of patients need to be intubated which requires a bed in the ICU ward, which are very limited. So the goal is to space out the infection as much as possible so that they don't run out of ICU capacity.

But realistically, 12-18 months before this particular virus is under control with a vaccine of any kind.

What are some good cheap remote desktop apps?

I'm using teamviewer which I used a couple years ago, but now it disconnects with the free version after a couple hours and it wants $50/month for a 1 user sub to keep it from disconnecting which is a lot of fucking money :| Gotta be something cheaper that works as good.

Aren't you a lawyer? I've never worked in a legal office but that seems like one of the most remoteable jobs in the world.

To answer your question, I've only used the VNC remote software app and it worked well. Pricing seems pretty reasonable too:

https://www.realvnc.com/en/connect/pricing/

If you haven't already, the trickiest thing is having good filepath organization for all the papers that y'all keep...on file. So infuriating when you can't find where someone saved something from years earlier.

Even that's still $40/month which is $480 a year because of these stupid sub services when I could have just bought it for $60-99 years ago for a permanent product. A remote desktop app doesn't need a sub service wtf!

We use Citrix and have both virtual desktops and access directly to office PCs, but 99% of the lawyers and some other staff (like IT and management) have laptops with VPN access.  For a small office, wouldn't it be better to just have laptops that you can bring home with you?

Wait, windows 10 has built in remote desktop?? I'm gonna have to google this weekend. I've been using the same tech for like 10 years because it's rare I need to remote desktop onto my work computer.

I also do not know anything about how VPN works since I never learned. I mainly remote desktop to get onto my server and grab files/drop files there. Probably can access the server from home if I learned how.

Is the remote stuff included in Win 10 that crappy?

I used to use Windows RDC to remote in at my last job. It sucked trying to navigate in game menus when running our game in the Unreal editor remotely, but aside from that it was fine.

Since I gave up on playing Death Stranding, what caused the apocalypse in that world?
Death Stranding
spoiler (click to show/hide)
In Death Stranding world people have bodies in the real world and souls that exist in a separate reality/dreams/the beach (Ha and Ka) and every couple billion years there's an "extinction entity" that eventually realizes their purpose is to cause the extinction of their species. Norman Reedus' Mom was the extinction entity and her body and soul split when she underwent surgery and her soul was trapped on The Beach. (Death StrandingReal Body Mom was trying to prevent the extinction event by using stillborn babies' souls to make a super time travel internet. Mads Mikkelson is a father of one of the kids and dies while attempting to get his kid back (btw the mom was also the president of the USA) and in the process, the baby is killed as well. Soul Mom feels bad about this and saves the soul of the baby using her powers from the beach and Real Body Mom raises him as her son irl, while Soul Mom raises him on the beach in his dreams. He comes back to life but he can't be killed anymore (Death Stranding) and instead, every time he is killed it causes a massive Akira-esque nuke crater. This throws off the balance of life and death within the world and causes the Death Stranding, time fall, etc.

There's this show called Live PD that's basically COPS but it's live, and every other dude the cops are trying to arrest tonight is claiming "I've got the corona, don't touch me!" :lol

I watched several hours of this while I was in a hospital last year and it's amazing. There's something so latestagecapitalism about watching cops arrest people for entertainment but it fucking rules

edit: just found my post about it

Select quotes out of context:
- "If you don't get these handcuffs off right now... you're gonna have to put a bullet in me, I swear to God."
- "Yeah, looks like we've got a Constitutionalist."
- "Do you normally sit in a car at night watching your stepmom's house sir?"

That was ONE episode!

I tend to like it more for the strange interactions with the drunks/druggies that are kinda friendly than most of the arrests, it can be most aggravating when I'm screaming NO YOU DO NOT CONSENT TO A SEARCH in my head during every traffic stop. Especially when you can tell it's guaranteed they've got like ten bags of meth or something in the car.
