President Moon Jae-In,

We need your help. Our President waffles back and forth on how to use the factories in our country everyday because he can't figure out which oligarchs he wants to please. Essential workers are kept grinding away until they fall seriously ill or die, because they are not given any sick time to recuperate despite having essential functions in a pandemic. These combined issues have resulted in a dilemma where all the people working the jobs society needs to function are performing them with no protection or financial security. If they speak out about the dangerous work conditions, they are immediately let loose by the managerial bureaucracy comfortably working from home despite having a shortage of necessary personnel. The plutocrat press praises governor Cuomo's response to this crisis despite his decade of work spent closing hospitals and advocating for workers to have less coverage, we have no voice. Please send Daewoo K1A Assault Carbine and  K-SAM Chunma to our oppressed friends in New York City.

So apparently some people at the Imperial College London, quoted in a MIT review, are envisioning on/off shutdowns (1month off, 2 months on) until a vaccine is found.

Yeah that's fucked up. I only hear about celebrities / elected officials that died of it or are hospitalized here, though I'm sure Yuro celebs can buy a test from a lab just fine, maybe I don't give enough attention to their Twitter or something... Or maybe they don't flaunt it as much.

Got discharged from the hospital last Friday and now safely at home. Talking to my friend who's a doctor at University of Washington, they're expecting the surge to hit Seattle in about 2 1/2 weeks now, the weekend of March 20-22 was really sunny and people were fucking stupid and congregated outside.

7 more deaths in a nursing home of Lorient. We're still waiting on an official tally that was promised last week for deaths outside the hospital system. Belgium has started adding those, they're at 705 total.

France is currently at 20k tests a day.
499 deaths in the last 24h.
Big spike in new cases too (+7k according to Worldometers).
Still a lot of ICU admissions.
Lockdown effects not kicking in yet...

Wife's job situation is starting to get kinda fun in a general boredom sort of way.

-She gets sent home by her boss on a Friday out of health concerns (pregnancy)
-She goes back in the following Monday and is sent back home again for the same reason plus no client business
-She stays home for the rest of the week on PTO
-She is told she cannot work remotely
-Yesterday, she is told she can work remotely
-She is told hours later that she cannot work remotely again (lol)
-She receives paperwork about staying at home and 'emergency' extra sick leave for another two weeks, asking for specific reasons why people can't come in (Seriously??)
-Literally right after she sends this in, she is told her office has been shut down for the remainder of the week and everyone was sent home  :lol

Today our government decided to extend the semi-lockdown up to April 28th.
Our PM added that he'd be surprised if life could return back to normal after and that people shouldn't make plans for their May holiday and should stay inside during Easter.

Our IC capacity has been expanded from 1150 beds a week ago to 2400 now but it is uncertain if this is enough.
This weekend is expected to be a real test for the system. Government is also planning to increase testing capacity to 29k a day so people other than healthcare workers and terminally ill can get tested.
Again he said these are war time conditions and the biggest crisis we faced since the war when a journalist asked if he had a message for bars/restaurant/pub owners going through difficult times.

It's still hard to gauge the seriousness of this virus. I listened to an interview of someone who was in intensive care but recovered from Covid, yet was young (28) and healthy (regularly ran marathons). The point being made was that you can be young and healthy yet still get bad outcomes.

The recent interview I watched was someone suffering from cancer and so I guess immune deficient. He got Covid but it was really mild. He only had a bit of fever and that was it. No cough, no shortness of breath. Went away relatively quickly.

In truth it is not that surprising that someone can be really healthy but still have a bad outcome from the virus. It's like anything else really. Everyone's biological makeup is different. Some people have a bad reaction from a bee sting for instance. People react differently to things. However, exactly what percentage of people will react badly to Covid? Still unclear.

And on the positive end of things, it can be one of the most mild viruses you'll ever catch. It doesn't even matter if you're suffering from cancer, you won't even notice it.

This won't become clear until we are looking back on it I imagine and have time to really look at the data.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/2020/03/coronavirus-pandemic-fake-animal-viral-social-media-posts/

Quote
These reports of wildlife triumphs in countries hard-hit by the novel coronavirus got hundreds of thousands of retweets. They went viral on Instagram and Tik Tok. They made news headlines. If there’s a silver lining of the pandemic, people said, this was it—animals were bouncing back, running free in a humanless world.

But it wasn’t real.

The swans in the viral posts regularly appear in the canals of Burano, a small island in the greater Venice metropolitan area, where the photos were taken. The “Venetian” dolphins were filmed at a port in Sardinia, in the Mediterranean Sea, hundreds of miles away. No one has figured out where the drunken elephant photos came from, but a Chinese news report debunked the viral posts: While elephants did recently come through a village in Yunnan Province, China, their presence isn’t out of the norm, they aren’t the elephants in the viral photos, and they didn’t get drunk and pass out in a tea field.

Those birds I saw were real

BTW.. the interview with the person suffering from cancer and Covid-19 is a BBC reporter.  George Alagiah.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/av/uk-52111754/bbc-s-george-alagiah-on-living-with-coronavirus-and-cancer

Which I guess means it is not a foregone conclusion if you have underlying health issues.

When they say underlying health issues, they're primarily talking about anything that affects your oxygen levels, like obesity and existing pulmonary disease, or autoimmune disorders. I don't think bowel cancer is going to be a compounding factor.

At which point does it become a thing that anyone who has officially "recovered" is exempt from lockdowns and can go about their normal lives?

hopefully it slows down even more, although it's amazing to me that even with all the measures in place we'll still have millions of cases. How long can people stay inside?

Iceland conducted tests on a random sample of 16k people for a total population of 364k (approx. and info dated March 29) which returned 1086 positive cases. Complete stats here :https://www.covid.is/data.

Island nation and all that but for the sake of argument just assuming that 1 in 16 is correct and applying it to the USA...

The thing is our current predictions on CFR or people needing heavy medical care are mainly based on the known infections. So if the dark figures are really that much higher, it also means it's less dangerous.

If the problem is not the lethality but how fast it is spreading, we're still left with the same problems on how to reopen safely. Though a very high rate of untracked infections with benign effects, if some immunity naturally exists after carrying it, would have the problem sort of sorting itself.

High numbers of benign would be reassuring to most people

Pape Diouf (scust smiley on TheColi), former president of Marseilles football team, contracted COVID19 in Dakar and should be transferred to France.

At which point does it become a thing that anyone who has officially "recovered" is exempt from lockdowns and can go about their normal lives?

When reliable, mass, quick testing will be available.

When a degree of persisting immunity and no longer being contagious is displayed in research.
Testing for antibodies becomes accurate and massive in scale and a means for "license to leave home" is thought of.

So, not even on the horizon atm.

Bad day for the stats of France, UK, Spain, Belgium, Netherlands and probably the USA. Italy still with a lot of fatalities though it seems things are cooling down otherwise.
