Was out driving and saw a couple dozen people on the street either walking, walking their dog, jogging, riding bikes. No one was wearing a mask.

Why do you need to wear a mask if you're outside and (presumably) not around other people?

I dunno, but it's become a dictat in some places (here for example you gotta wear one when outside, no matter what).
I guess it's one of those things of "you can't trust people to apply common sense, so you enforce more rules for everyone".

From pipe dream to prospect: the pandemic is making a case for a universal basic income

As every schoolchild knows, it was the First World War that brought Canadian women into the workplace (though of course, they had always been working). Even after the men returned from the front, women continued to work — and what was a temporary change turned into a new societal norm.

The Great War left us with another supposedly temporary measure: income tax. "I have placed no time limit upon this measure," said then finance minister Thomas White in 1917. "A year or two after the war is over, the measure should be reviewed."

We all know how that turned out.

Ontario
Cases:  12,879 (+634)
Deaths:  713 (+54)
Hospitalizations: 887 (+9)

Backlog: 6,757 (-88)

I think that's a high for new cases and one short of a high for deaths.

Governor here extended the stay at home til the 15th and is working on a re-opening plan, which all fits with the state's original model. deaths are trending down and recoveries are trending up and we have pretty good testing so all in all new mexico is more ahead of the game than i expected.

This trial (Phase II of the development) will last for several months (200 healthy people are volunteering), but they said it's unlikely that there'll be a vaccine in 2020. Phase I of vaccine development normally lasts 2-5 years, phase II and III normally take 4-7 years, so they are now doing it at record speed. There are currently 80 projects underway around the world, most of which won't succeed. The mRNA vaccines by Biontech are among the most promising ones, which is why they are the first ones to be tested in Germany.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced a $1.1 billion strategy for medical research to fight COVID-19.

The plan has three components:

$115 million for research into vaccines and treatments being developed in hospitals and universities.
$662 million for clinical trials in Canada.

People must be shitty tippers in Kentucky;  my Barista friends make hundreds per shift in tips.

Could be the fact they serve coffee in see-through bikinis and show you their cornhole for $5.

I don't see how the bikini would hold the coffee.

I meant that's exactly what will happen - shut down enought to keep ICU below capacity and then try to wait it out - herd immunity is the long term end result of that.

Well these people were around other people. Like I get no reason to wear one on a bike, but walking around in crowded communities?

I'm just saying I was trying to make the effort to wear a mask on walks because if everyone did then we're all protecting each other, but if no one is, then I'm not going to wear one because there's no point and wearing a mask sucks on walks because you can't smell anything and besides the sun, the best part of being outside is smelling the trees/nature.

Yeah it's just that a few dumb dumbs like our government and the brits didn't understand how it works.

"So the more people get it, the earlier we reach herd immunity. Just infect everyone, easy"  :smug

"Yeah but you need 1 million ICU beds or lots will die"  :birb

"So how many do we have?" :smug

Ah OK, so they're morons.  Not staying apart is bad idea outside too.  Experienced the same thing this past weekend in my parents' neighborhood and am not going back there to walk until this shit is back to normal.

Yeah, I don't know what to do when I have to go back to work at the school. Wear a mask, and hope the kids are wearing a mask? They already packed the classroom to the gills because they didn't want to hire more teachers. Good luck fitting 30 kids in a small classroom while also trying to maintain 6 feet radius.

Pickup and delivery is up. I've been told but didn't verify that some regulation here is making a difference between restaurants and "caterers" with only the latter being open. Anecdotal experience : Pickup is only possible if they can serve you directly on the street. Delivery is more limited to pizza/burger/chwarma. Anything more sophisticated is closed in both cases.

i've only done food pickup at the chinese place down the street but they are only doing phone orders and you have to wait outside to get the food and pay. weed shops are still operating normally but just limited to 1-2 people inside at a time. grocery is limiting to 20% capacity.

That's jumping to conclusions all over the place. An earlier study showed that smokers have a higher chance of developing severe symptoms if they are infected.

"Recent evidence shows that smokers are more susceptible to severe symptoms if they contract COVID-19. In a recent study published by the New England Journal of Medicine, smokers were 2.4 times more likely to have severe symptoms from COVID-19 compared to those who did not smoke."
