Our boy etiolate was also a massive Sacramento Kings fan. Wonder if he was at the protest.

I was referring to Glen being an LA Kings fan :lol

Some people are too young to remember the uhhhhhh, Mike Bibby years of the Sacramento Kings.

*checks Wikipedia when he played there. 01 to 08*

Well, I guess the franchise is too irrelevant altogether then, cause that's not too long ago.

Quote
One of Canada’s oldest women, Foon Hay Lum, who was separated from her husband for more than 30 years by the Chinese immigration ban and later helped secure a formal apology and compensation for all Chinese Canadians who paid the head tax, has died. She was 111.

Lum died Friday evening after being diagnosed with COVID-19 at the Mon Sheong Homes for the Aged, where dozens of residents have tested positive and 26 have passed away. The home, which has lost 80 per cent of its staff during the outbreak, started receiving reinforcements from Mount Sinai hospital on Friday.

Because of the ban on visitors to long-term-care homes, Lum died without being able to visit with her family — one last case of the forced separation she had to cope with throughout her life.

Sounds like this lock down shit is going to continue through summer in Ontario, I wouldn't be surprised if they end up barely being in stage two come September.

Apparently, that's not even enough. They also need to see a "decrease in the rate of cases that cannot be traced to a source" and a "decrease in the number of new cases in hospitals." Though the number of new cases has decreased the last few days, the number of new cases in hospitals continues to grow a bit. I wouldn't expect anything to start being lifted until June.

Stage one opens up some workplaces that can meet public health guidance and requirements (an example given is curbside pickup) and opens up some outdoor spaces (funerals is an example given).

He's thinking they're gonna run out of money to pay unemployment and they can't raise taxes to generate more, so fuck the poors.

A rough thought occurred to me the other day, I don't know if I expect to actually return to the office the rest of this year. I would be mostly okay if I could go seem people every now and then and had some way to just not be in my apartment for a few hours every so often.

Given several counties up in the Bay Area extended their S-A-H to the end of May though...

Saw this earlier in the month but didn't get any wide coverage. Proposal by a virologist who also runs a DNA sequencing software company to search for attenuated strains from asymptomatic infected in order to hasten the pace of progress and prevent subsequent infection. Seems an optimistic approach, relying on finding enough attenuated strains in the wild (ideally in entire communities to be able to track effects it has had) with sufficient natural (rather than artificial) deletions to determine its safety for use in vaccinating others.

The idea appearing to be that nature will have tested the effects of such natural strains with sufficient deletions and if a wide enough number of infected with such strains can be determined to have a safe enough outcome it may fast track the approval process, instead of the longer timeline that most current vaccination methods will require with volunteers and standard regulatory processes.

Initial proposal and background on the method (including some earlier research into artificially attenuated strains for the original SARS), on the feasibility of searching for and analyzing such strains, argument in favor of this method vs existing vaccination research efforts. Subsequent articles going over current data in sidebar. Would be interesting to hear feedback from other professionals in the area.

Quote
We would ideally be looking for a virus strain with a large(ish) deletion in an essential viral gene like the strain found in Singapore (unfortunately this strain is too dangerous to use as it put people into hospital). This sort of deletion mutation is easy to spot in the SARS-CoV-2 genome data, and because the genetic information has been removed, it makes the virus unlikely to be able to mutate back into a dangerous strain. Ideally, the strain identified will have infected a large number of other people in the local area so we can know it is safe from the epidemiological data. This will be important for getting regulatory approval to use the strain.

Quote
If we find that everyone who was infected with a particular deletion strain only had a mild case of COVID-19, then we have our candidate attenuated strain which could be used to accelerate vaccine development in a challenge trial. Finding such an attenuated strain should allow us to shave many months off the development of an effective vaccine that will protect us from this terrible pandemic. The value of this in both lives and dollars saved is immense.

The german institute that is responsible for providing the government with data on the corona virus has done some interesting calculations regardind the development of corona. It's known that there is a delay between the individual outbreak of the corona virus and registration in the health care system. Reasons are health offices not beig open on weekends, waiting time for results, individual time of seeing a doctor and so on.

What the new calculation shows, is that the number of daily newinfections was declining even before the lockdown was in place. Canceling of mass events, closing of schools and change of individual behaviour due to the public discussion were apparently enough. The reprodcution number already was below 1 at that time.

Here are the curves for actual day of illness (red line) vs day of registration (blue line)

The first vertical line is the start of the lockdown, the second line the first ease of restrictions.

The good news here is that we most likely won't need a lockdown to keep corona in check. Consequent social distancing (and masks) will be enough. Reasonable individual behaviour seems key to public health. And we will be able to return to an accepable level of social events and opening business and economic production.

But there is also some bad news. In the last two weeks, the slow down of new infections has almost stopped (look at the end of the red line) and from calculations it seems like there has actually been slow growth of daily new infections in the last couple of days. Seems like compliance with the restrictions is already going down too much. So if this trend continues, we might be back to square one in a couple of weeks (or in the next winter season).

French Prime Minister will present the exit strategy this afternoon, only for it to be voted a couple of hours later. All the big opposition groups said they will vote against or abstain because they find the lack of any parliamentary (or civil society partners) input and debate scandalous and in general say the text is full of "contradictory injunctions". Socialists also don't like the tracing apps and would like that mandatory masks (which are likely on the menu) be distributed free.

Macronist majority doesn't need any of those votes and unless the whip is literally asleep on the wheel + a large internal faction dissents (will not happen) it will go through.

So apparently France will not reopen college and lycées (HS and college for the US equivalent) as soon as schools. Probably not until next school year.

Most cultural events will stay closed on May 11th except for very small ones.

Masks will be mandatory in public transports. Advised elsewhere.

All place of works except those mentioned above and bars/restaurants will reopen.

Public transports should have marks on the ground and condemn one seat out of two to have some sort of social distancing. Sounds a bit  :brain to be honest. Will only work if some people stay WFH I think.

They're planning on 1000/3000 new cases a day once things reopen and say that 700k tests per week should be the correct capacity to identify those new people and tests those around them.

If the signs are not there, they could push back the May 11 date.

It's an unusual name, but you got to think that in a country of 328 million people, there is bound to be a Tupac Shakur. And that seems even more likely when you consider it is the name of a very famous rap star. People name their children after famous people all the time.
