No matter how high the death count gets in the US, Trump is going to take credit that it could have been much worse had he not done all that he did. He's going to use that 2 million number as his high bar so as long as it doesn't hit that he did his job and the country should praise him for it.

Yup, and that's why he should have been repeating that number over and over instead of continually lowballing it.

28% is closer to 1/4 than 1/3, but I suppose the point remains.

I walked my dog by a couple parks yesterday. There were people in them but it wasn't packed and everyone was spread out. Sketchiest thing I saw was when a tennis ball got out of the courts, someone outside returned it, but who is gonna be a dick about that? One park I went past on Friday there were a number of rather old people (some on breathing apparatus) sitting in it.

Meanwhile I saw pictures online that suggest that Venice beach is a free for all.

Unless like every other person starts getting it, I don't see the US trying to go backwards. It's like a bunch of grounded teenagers just got partially ungrounded but mom and dad are out of town and their lazy uncle doesn't really care that much to enforce the rules.

28% is the percentage of Coronavirus deaths, 1/3 is the total of cases. I got confused too because he's mixing percentages and fractions. It's one of my pet peeves, because I know students get mixed up by that too if I'm not being careful teaching fractions, percentages and decimals and not being explicit about the conversions.

Masks are now required here for everything but exercise and eating/drinking outside but the state is also providing masks to anyone who cannot get them, which seems like the smart way to do it.

 New Hampshire   1.1
 Alabama   1.09

The 12 states currently with the highest Reproduction Numbers all have Republican governors.
The bottom six states can probably thank geography and/or density (Iowa, South Dakota, North Dakota look especially bad).

Sweden’s health authorities are blaming the country’s death toll – which is higher than in neighbouring Denmark, Norway and Finland – on the fatality rate in care homes.

About 90% of the 3,700 people who have died from coronavirus in Sweden were over 70, and half were living in care homes, according to a study from Sweden’s National Board of Health and Welfare at the end of April.

“We failed to protect our elderly. That’s really serious, and a failure for society as a whole,” health minister Lena Hallengren told Swedish Television.

Speaking on Instagram in Russian, Nurmagomedov, 31, confirmed that his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, recently underwent heart surgery due to complications stemming from a previous ailment and the coronavirus. He went on to encourage people around the world to remain in self-isolation to combat the pandemic.

"In my personal case, I've had more than 20 people sick from my family," Nurmagomedov said in comments translated by ESPN. "More than 20 people were lying in the ICUs. And many of them are no longer among us. Many acquaintances have died, many parents of my relatives. Everybody is having a hard time dealing with it.

PARIS — Just one week after a third of French schoolchildren went back to school in an easing of coronavirus lockdowns, a worrying flareup of about 70 COVID-19 cases has been linked to schools.

Some lower grades were opened last week, and 150,000 more junior high students went back to the classroom Monday as further restrictions were loosened by the government. The move initially spelled relief: the end of homeschooling for hundreds of thousands of exhausted French parents, many of whom were also working from home.

But Education Minister Jean-Michel Blanquer sounded the alarm Monday, telling French radio RTL that the return has put some children in new danger of contamination. He said the affected schools are being closed immediately. French media reported that seven schools in northern France were closed.

Going by South Korea etc, if you get the numbers down low enough and are aggressive enough in testing and tracing, then you can resume a certain amount of activity pre-vaccine AND avoid new waves of mass infection.

Don't know the political situation regarding the virus in France, but so far the US has been steadfastly not learning a damn thing from the success cases so far.

I think pretty much every country failed at protecting elderly homes. There are lots of stories in different countries. For example France had to greatly increase it's death numbers retrospectively when they took death cases in care homes into account. This is probably just a symptom of most modern societies just not giving a fuck about their elderly population. Mandark is probably right though that a high prevalence of covid in the general population increases the risk of infection events in care homes.

Also, that quoted graph shows that the daily/weekly death numbers per capita have been decreasing much slower in Sweden than in other countries. If you ignore the peak at the end of april, they seem almost flat since the 10th of April. If it's so easy to pinpoint the problem to not protecting elderly homes, why haven't they done something about it by now?

Europe as a whole pretends South Korea doesn't exist for some reason to cover up the fact that they 'fucked up'.

Some countries still maintain that there's no scientific proof that masks work as that would make everyone less vigilant.

Nah, that supremes stayed that boi. Oregon isn’t/hasn’t implemented a lot of the CARES act into their systems and you literally can’t get through their phone lines. If I mark “temporarily unemployed” for a fourth time in their system, I’m quite certain it’s just going to deny the weekly claim. I think I’m just going to have to do my best to fulfill my legal obligation of work search without getting a job I don’t want

Even before COVID-19 officially had a name, public health officials said the virus could be transmitted through infected respiratory droplets and by touching infected surfaces and then touching your nose, mouth, and possibly your eyes. So, people began snatching up face masks, wearing gloves, and ramping up hand hygiene to try to protect themselves.

While touching infected surfaces has always been part of the messaging on how the virus spreads, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently shifted its stance online. The CDC now says that COVID-19 spreads from person to person contact, and then lists touching infected surfaces under a section titled, "The virus does not spread easily in other ways." The CDC adds: “This is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads, but we are still learning more about this virus.” The language is a subtle change from the organization’s warning in early March, when it wrote simply that it “may be possible” to spread the virus through contaminated surfaces.

The CDC, which did not respond to Yahoo Life’s request for comment, still recommends that you wash your hands often with soap and water, and routinely clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces to protect yourself and others from the virus.

France actually subtracted 200~ deaths today, apparently a small portion of death in care homes were ruled as not COVID linked contrary to what was assumed initially. Numbers trending in the right direction but it's only been one week since relaxing lockdown started. Workplace regulations are somewhat heavy.

France did overtake Spain in total fatalities so far and we're only 4k shy of Italy. I guess that's the "gain" of locking a week earlier than over the Alps... More refined study of excess mortality will maybe paint a different picture. Though Italy took a lot of of spotlight and an amount of somewhat condescending pity for being first in the furnace but now that the UK passed them and is still digging that hole we can spare PIGS the sick man of Europe spiel.

Europe as a whole pretends South Korea doesn't exist for some reason to cover up the fact that they 'fucked up'.

Some countries still maintain that there's no scientific proof that masks work as that would make everyone less vigilant.

Reminds me of 50 years ago when automakers said crumple zones and seat belts are bad because all injuries in a car accident are due to operator error.

Time to establish the right and wrong sides of history.

Work started doing our biweekly covid testing on staff this week.  I’ve not had a swab placed that far up my nose before, was an interesting experience to say the least.

We can only hope the next virus is related to our prostates

Do you think the US hits 100k by Monday

That really depends.

I'd need to figure out what day of the week it is today.

I needed a haircut in March for fuck's sake, I just have to embrace the man bun at this point or something. We never really shut down so I dont trust anyone not have been exposed to it for a two week period.  :-\
