i went for a nice long hike earlier this week. wasn't too crowded but i had to have passed by at least 30 people and not a single one had a mask on or was even carrying one.

i'm getting more and more bitter by the day tbh. my dad turned 70 last month and i couldn't give him a fucking hug. i don't have any close relationships with anyone who's been doing real isolation so we could potentially meet up. and don't even get me started on sex.

yet even in some best case scenario where like biden wins and becomes super crackdown president we've still got a good 7 or 8 months of this, but in reality that will never happen and in a best case scenario this shit is going on til the end of 2021. get to choose between losing my fucking mind or going out and acting like a potential painful death is just an inevitable part of society now. FUCK i hate it. i hate that we coddle the absolute worst of society and this unreal nightmare is where it took us, and that we still have so far and so much more pain to go. i'm just sick of all this shit.

I hate Americans.

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2020-07-17/california-imposes-statewide-coronavirus-standard-for-reopening-schools

Quote
SACRAMENTO —  Most California public school campuses will not reopen when the academic year begins under statewide rules to be announced Friday by Gov. Gavin Newsom, shifting instead toward full-time distance learning in response to the summer surge in coronavirus cases.

Education officials briefed on the plan said that schools will remain closed in 32 counties on the state’s COVID-19 monitoring list, a mandate confirmed by the Newsom administration shortly before the governor was scheduled to make his announcement. Public health conditions in those communities led state officials last week to require a variety of facilities to close including gyms, shopping malls, hair and nail salons and places of worship. The counties are home to 35.5 million Californians.

Went on a hike with the parents for the first time since March and some couple we passed said “I can’t believe they’re wearing masks” when they thought they were out of earshot.  :hhh

Same. When I go running I simply make sure to go around people and keep my social distance. Same thing when just walking somewhere too.

Granted the area I'm in isn't ever that busy with pedestrians and I'm rarely on one of the busy streets where there are more pedestrians. It'd be a different story if there are constantly people passing by me.

Think US will be bad today.  +56,632 with most of Texas and Cali missing.

The Lone Star State shattered its single-day record to eclipse that awful benchmark, reporting 14,780 new cases Friday, the latest NBC News tally showed.

I don't think this is right because no one else has reported this.  But if so the US will be in 80K today.

Given it seems to be continually accelerating and there is still no effort to acknowledge it is a problem in many areas let alone act.
Just how bad can it possibly get?

Like is there a tipping point, crisis runaway point.

In terms of testing, I think it will max out at around 100k a day (or at least stop growing at 10k a week) unless they change it to only testing hospital emissions etc.  This also is conditional on places like Georgia not reporting 10k a day.

I haven’t posted in here in a while. My father in law tested positive about a month ago. He ended up in the hospital but recovered and is doing well now. My mother in law and sister in law also contracted it. My sister in law had very mild symptoms but my mother in law developed pneumonia (for the 2nd time this year!). She went to the hospital but just received medication and has recovered. All I can really say is that I’m so happy it wasn’t worse. I’ve mentioned it before but my wife is an ICU nurse and several of her friends/coworkers have contracted it from patients. I’m thankful my wife has not but the hospitals are insane right now and so I worry about her a lot.

You're supposed to bring a mask with you in the event you get into situations where you can't avoid other people. Like for instance, I do my work outs in my yard, so there is no reason to wear a mask, but if I were to run at the park or go to the trails on a busy day, I would bring/wear a mask and hope everyone else is too.
I keep them in my car and don't hike around people  :yeshrug I'd love to go to the beach, but I don't because people. it's not difficult at all to avoid others when hiking or walking the dogs :birdman

No masks here so I'm still pretty much sneaking my way around supermarkets like Solid Snake finding routes and lanes where I don't bump into other people.

Social distancing has pretty much ended though. People keep 'some space' but not nearly the space that they should.
Luckily the number of cases has gone down, but in some countries they are on the rise again and I hope we can avoid that.

Get a fucking mask you nerd
I have one of those washable cloth masks., but by no masks here I mean that no one here uses masks.
They are only mandatory in public transport. In fact it is forbidden for a citizen to own an N95 mask as those are only for medical use.
If you have an N95 mask it can be confiscated.

Find a Korean, Chinese, Japanese, Asian, etc. super market. They have their own supplies to masks. Koreans have the KF94, Chinese use the KN95. Europe should have a FFPE mask that should work similar to a N95.

Pretty much nobody wears masks here, either. They are not easily available in supermarkets and there is no general recommendation from the Department of Public Health to wear them, in fact almost the contrary is true.

So I was thinking with the whole face shield thing, if you really wanted safe protection and didn't care about looking like a weirdo, what if you wore a mask w/filter & then on top of that wore a motorcycle helmet with the visor down?

theoretically seems like it should keep you safe from the neck up in all 360 directions as long as you wash your clothes/hands after going through an infection zone and don't touch your face.

I may have to go to my doctor who won't wear a mask in the future, I'm trying to avoid it but gotta see how it goes. So if I absolutely have to and I have to imagine a scenario where he is contagious in a small room for 5 mins talking at me with no mask how I protect myself besides punching him in the gut and knocking him unconscious.

Maybe you can call him beforehand and explain how uncomfortable you are right now because it's a closed room, and he has to stand near you to examine you. Or if you don't want to talk to him, call your Health insurance and request another doctor. If you think he's a risk, don't take the risk.

Another thing, the women vs male leaders and corona response going around social media.
It kinda irks me, I don't mind the point it is making but there are some major sticking points for me. Like all the good response nations are rich, limited borders, and small.
Some of the bad responses are like the States and fair enough there, but to include India and Brazil? Those countries could have better direction but they are too big, poor, and possess major bordering regions to compete with the good response nations.

Most white people are like anyone else, just okay.

But they're the only group I've seen where occasionally, there is a kid who is never told no and who has never experienced a time-out. Those kids grow up you know.

In fact it is forbidden for a citizen to own an N95 mask as those are only for medical use.
If you have an N95 mask it can be confiscated.

:snoop Anyone should be able to use good PPE assuming one is educated enough on their use, limitations, etc.

One can understand why at the beginning spokespeople were promoted in the media some places initially against 'masks' (lumping respirators into the terminology, to the confusion of many) since there was a legitimate shortage of the disposable respirators (eg: the N95 variety) for hospitals which typically dispose of them by requirement between patients (ie: they need a lot of them) and they didn't want a public rush on them like the toilet paper scenario. They also had to consider that most wouldn't know how to properly handle or use them (eg: cross-contamination issues, necessary facial seal, disposal/decontamination). Further they would have considered the negative psychological effect it may have on some if they knew the difference in effectiveness between say surgical style masks and actual respirators (eg: feeling of inadequate protection).

Then the focus thankfully changed to where collective responsibility was emphasized by wearing any form of mask (which Asian countries already practiced), with the goal being (mostly) mitigating others from one's own droplets rather than necessarily fully protecting the wearer. This was helped by the DIY mask efforts which promote regular decontamination via accessible means like boiling.

So long as you can breath at all in there :doge Not sure where helmets draw air in from when closed.

Longer post re PPE
If someone is more concerned than the average person a half-mask respirator with dedicated particulate cartridge filters (these are more suitable for regular decontamination than the organic vapor kind with an additional particulate attachment which feature exposed filters), along with goggles that use indirect venting or are fully sealed are a more ideal option, particularly legitimate 3M respirator/filters since they've been found to have a better shelf life than other brands (though avoid the plethora of Chinese counterfeits sold and branded as '3M' on online marketplaces). These filters don't require disposal after use unlike the common disposable kind and some hospitals have been informed by 3M representatives they last an entire pandemic wave based on prior pandemics (assuming proper care and exterior decontamination), which makes them more affordable long-term than disposal kind while also providing a much better facial seal.

All the info and data is out there about this (studies on respirator decontamination and effectiveness, handling) and has been since this all began but frankly most won't go this route since it looks extreme and they barely want to use any masks properly. That said it offers better protection for the wearer assuming proper use.

That said it offers better protection for the wearer assuming proper use.

Luckily the virus is pretty much under control here now. In fact it is so much under control that a lot of tourists from other European countries have decided to spend their summer vacation in Holland because we don't have such strict regulations.
Still, I worry that we're going to see an increase in cases again once people get back to indoor activities.

Arizona is 2,742+, 147 deaths with a 30.4% positivity rate.  Things are going to get pretty bad in the next few weeks.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) – A Tampa Bay area doctor is confused and upset after a pharmacy refused to dispense medication for a patient with COVID-19. This is the first time the doctor says he’s ever been questioned about a prescription.

Doctor Speros Hampilos got a call from a patient with alarming news.

“So he called me yesterday and said doc, I was in the ER diagnosed with pneumonia and COVID-19 and I still don’t feel good,” said Dr. Speros Hampilos.

Leaning on 35 years of experience, the doctor wrote a script for three medications, among them, hydroxychloroquine which was approved 65 years ago to treat malaria the drug also helps people with rheumatoid arthritis and lupus.

Controversy has surrounded the drug as of late as different studies are looking into whether it helps treat people sick with coronavirus.

“When my assistant gave the COVID-19 diagnosis CVS said, sorry we can’t dispense the drug,” he said.

Doctor Speros was shocked.

“This is the first time we’ve been asked for a diagnosis and was declined,” said Dr. Speros.

He called another pharmacy and got it filled right away. He reached out 8 On Your Side wanting to know more than the reason he was told over the phone by the pharmacist.

“But unless your hands are tied by corporate policy there isn’t much they can do,” said Dr. Speros.

“That’s what they told you the reason was right,” asked 8 On Your Side’s Marco Villarreal.

“Policy. We can’t dispense it for that diagnosis.”

CVS Pharmacy sent 8 On Your Side this statement:

We’re balancing the off-label use of certain prescription medications to treat COVID-19 pneumonia with the ongoing needs of patients who are prescribed these drugs to help manage chronic conditions such as lupus, HIV, rheumatoid arthritis and asthma. Our goal is to limit stockpiling of medication that could result in future shortages and gaps in care. Our pharmacies are following dispensing guidelines regarding the use of these medications for COVID-19 that have been established in certain states. In states with no guidelines, our pharmacies are limiting the dispensing for COVID-19 treatment to a 10-day supply with no refills.

Pharmacists also consider a variety of factors when evaluating prescriptions. These factors, along with a pharmacist’s professional judgement, help them to determine when it’s necessary to verify information with a physician before filling a prescription.

Dr. Speros says that’s unacceptable to patients who need that medication to battle coronavirus.

“If I would have said malaria or lupus I’d probably would have gotten it,” he said.

Doctor Speros says he has reached out to representative Gus Bilirakis with the hope this doesn’t happen again.

Areas and countries like Hong Kong, Singapore and Australia has been aggressive with shutdowns when cases 'spike', which still are cases in the dozens and hundreds. IMO, it's better to shut down early than late. If you're late, you end up like in the U.S. where the shutdown has limited effect, and there's less compliance. And numbers are still high.

The Trump administration is trying to block billions of dollars for states to conduct testing and contact tracing in the upcoming coronavirus relief bill, people involved in the talks said Saturday.

The administration is also trying to block billions of dollars that GOP senators want to allocate for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and billions more for the Pentagon and State Department to address the pandemic at home and abroad, the people said.

The administration’s posture has angered some GOP senators, the officials said, and some lawmakers are trying to push back and ensure that the money stays in the bill. The officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity to reveal confidential deliberations, cautioned that the talks were fluid and the numbers were in flux.

The negotiations center around a bill Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnnell (R-Ky.) is preparing to unveil this coming week as part of the negotiations with Democrats on what will likely be the last major coronavirus relief bill before the November election.
