Demoncraps: "This is absolutely fine. We'll give you a lawyer voucher so your eviction is upheld by the judge. #We'reHelping!"

Quote from: DeMoCrAcY dIeS iN dArkNeSs
He had five days to move out of the house in Brightwood Park, and now Daniel Vought stood looking at the plastic crates stacked in the living room holding his things. T-shirts. Power cords. Pokémon cards and stuffed animals. His beloved guitar — a Gibson Explorer electric — still hung on the wall. He figured it would be safer staying behind.

A new housemate was coming, one who could actually pay $800 a month for the room Vought, 30, had lived in rent-free since the coronavirus pandemic shut down the Georgetown bar where he worked.

For four months, his unemployment benefits application had been snared in red tape at the D.C. Department of Employment Services, a black hole of unanswered emails, phone holds and automated voice messages offering delays instead of answers.

(Granted, it could probably sell the Guitar and Pokémon cards [though the cards wouldn't give much, the hey-day of those are over compared to Magic]. But maybe that "roommate" is keeping it for him? IDK.)

Quote from: Vox
What the HELP Act would do
The HELP Act would allocate $10 billion in Emergency Solutions Grants (ESGs), which provide funding to states and localities for programs related to things like homelessness prevention and outreach, to go toward funding legal representation for those on the verge of being evicted.

Research has shown that providing tenants access to counsel can dramatically improve their chances in housing court, and the odds of a favorable outcome increase sharply.

Tenants are far more likely to come to housing court without attorneys, compared to landlords. For example, in New York City, before the local government instituted a right-to-counsel law in 2017 for low-income tenants facing evictions, 95 percent of landlords had an attorney compared to less than 1 percent of tenants, according to New York University’s Furman Center. After NYC’s right-to-counsel law was passed, tenant representation increased across the city. According to the Community Service Society, 84 percent of 22,000 eligible New Yorkers who had attorneys stayed in their homes in fiscal year 2018.

So in other words: The lawyer vouchers should be state programs (Thank you, democracy for this bullshit state/federal tier-system for better/worse) that should be done to give the evicted a better chance instead of the "working class party" throwing them a pity bone instead of telling the Republicans to fucking help or lose their elections/grow some balls and pass the second stimulus that should've been done in June at the latest.

Quote from: Vox
But unless Congress acts immediately, many of these protections are gone, or will be by the end of the month, just a few days away.

#OOPS

Quote from: Vox
And if Congress doesn’t pass a version of the HEROES Act soon, and eviction bans aren’t extended, the HELP Act would create an additional cushion, giving tenants assistance to fight evictions in court and a small lifeline to limit the effects on their credit history. During an unparalleled public health and economic emergency, every bit counts.

Except they're still out on their ass, and the landlords will have nobody to go in due to the mass unemployment. So bravo there to both parties.

Quote from: DeMoCrAcY dIeS iN dArkNeSs
It was Saturday morning. Four days left before Vought had to move. He sat on the porch, a bummed Marlboro Red in one hand, counting the bills in his wallet. Two. Three . . . Six. Seven. He was down to $7 in cash.

He now had a place to stay — 230 miles away. Vought’s father, a 68-year-old maintenance man at a Manhattan skyscraper, had offered the couch in his one-bedroom Bronx apartment, and sent $100 through Western Union to help with travel expenses.

“It’s the street or my dad’s,” Vought said. “There’s nothing else.”

But was $100 even enough to get to New York City? His cellphone bill was due: $50. If he paid, was the rest enough for travel? Were buses even still running between the District and New York?

“When you’re poor everything is a 10-step process that ends up costing way more than if you actually have resources,” Vought said before starting his walk to Western Union, a mile and a half away at a Safeway on Georgia Avenue.

(...)

He couldn’t find other work. His dad wired $50 or $100 when he could, small lifelines that brought a mix of relief and shame.

“That’s another 100 bucks that’s now not in my dad’s pocket,” he would think.

(...)

“Nobody wants to date a guy who doesn’t know where he’s going to be living next. Nobody wants to hang out with somebody that smells . . . because they haven’t had a shower in three days,” he said.

“The economic differences are becoming so stark in such a small area like here that I can’t even relate to people anymore that I meet. They look at me like I’m crazy. I look at them like they’re stupid.”

Quote
Kennerly’s frustrations centered on his lack of a computer.

His benefits were held up, a city worker finally told him, because he’d provided incorrect information when trying to fill out the form on his phone. In June, the department promised to expedite his claim, but an important email ended up in his spam folder, costing him another month without aid.

“I don’t have a computer,” he explained. “It’s sort of embarrassing to tell people that you don’t, but I just don’t.”

Given how most everyone is on their (smart)phones now a days, it's absolutely atrocious how the federal AND state governments haven't top-to-bottom reworked their sites to be responsive or mobile-first (as much as I hate that web design). Given the severe lack of IT department employees in the government [last I checked] it shouldn't be surprising, but given many states have atrocious systems (21337 has mentioned it in the past IIRC) it's insane how the government has entirely failed.

@Riotious: Suck my dick, from the back. That goes for Shosta and Mandark, too. This shit is pissing me off and I'm not even in their (the people mentioned in this article) situation.

Both parties fucking suck, and if you go "oh well the Democrats suck less" you can eat my asshole and bowel movements both. There is zero reason as soon as the Pandemic started that Pelosi and Pence shouldn't have been all hands on deck.

Fuck them both for the "vacation"/off season the governors went on for about 2-3 weeks at a time while the Pandemic and no solid life-line plan was going on.

Fuck the Republicans for being assholes. Double-fuck the Democrats for saying they're the "party of the working class" and doing everything in their fucking power to not do shit to help the poor/working class (vouchers, etc).

The school district my wife teaches for gave 4 options to them:

Come back on day one.
Use personal days until they expire then come back (4-6 weeks usually)
Use a mixture of FMLA and personal days (approx 12 weeks)
Resign or Retire

I told her to take the full 12, let them flop around and figure a system out in those three months. Don’t be a guinea pig.

Reworking websites offers a great job opportunity too.

What is double weird is that freezing rents and the government subsidizing rents 6 months is a relatively cheap solution compared to a big economic crash.
Part of the GOP wants this crash because they are an insane death cult but it seems that the Democrats also want this crash to happen to hurt Trump's prospects at re-election.
But those dumbfucks are seemingly unaware how this will impact the ability of people to vote as they will have no address for their mail-in ballots by November 3rd.

If by November a large part of the electorate is scraping by for food and shelter the turn-out will not be high especially in the poor communities and Trump will beat Joe Basement anyway.

Writing in JAMA, a team of researchers from Italy reported that nearly nine in 10 patients (87%) discharged from a Rome hospital after recovering from covid-19 were still experiencing at least one symptom 60 days after onset. They found that 13% of the 143 people were completely free of any symptoms, while 32% had one or two symptoms, and 55% had three or more.3 Although none of the patients had fever or any signs or symptoms of acute illness, many still reported fatigue (53%), dyspnoea (43%), joint pain (27%), and chest pain (22%). Two fifths of patients reported a worsened quality of life.

Coronavirus transmission can occur even outdoors in crowded places if social distancing rules aren’t followed, which is why face masks are so crucial.
A cult has been hosting meetings in a tent in Des Plaines, Illinois, ignoring social distancing and face mask mandates despite local laws.
The cult leader, a Danish citizen who is also a coronavirus denier, is seeking asylum in the US and has asked President Trump for help with his events.

Quote
Organizer Torben Sondergaard is the man promoting his “Big Tent Revival” events on social media. The Danish citizen had been living with family in North Carolina since last year, and he’s currently seeking asylum in the US.

Sondergaard hosted his tent meetings in Des Plaines, Ill., Patch reported a few days ago. As many as 150 people have been gathering at the series of events at the Methodist Campground on East Algonquin Road. Sondergaard claimed that between 400 and 500 people have attended his tent events since last Friday.

Des Plaines has asked the cult to follow state mandates regarding COVID-19, including face masks and social distancing, but the people attending the events have ignored them, Sondergaard included.

Mayor Matthew Bogusz signed a revised emergency declaration on Tuesday night that makes Des Plaines’ face masks and social distancing requirements stricter than the rest of the state. “Failure to do so will result in a citation and fine,” Alderman Andrew Goczkowski said. “Failure to comply after a citation may result in further action.”

The fine for non-compliant individuals is $750 for each violation and additional fines can be issued each day. The city did issue a tent permit, complying with Governor Pritzker’s order that exempted religious groups from rules on gatherings of 50 people or less. The city did not issue an event permit, but Sondergaard insists the tent permit is enough to make his meetings legitimate.

Sondergaard has escalated the brewing conflict on social media, going as far as to request assistance from President Trump.

“We have sent a letter to the President of the United States to ask for his help,” Sondergaard said on Facebook. “I’m asking all Americans to pray now for a supernatural intervening to stop this Socialist Agenda before we become like China, Russia, Cuba, Venezuela, or Iran.”

Sondergaard has a YouTube channel with nearly 120,000 subscribers, where he posts all sorts of clips about the coronavirus. He’s been treating the illness as a hoax since it starting, saying it’s meant to scare the public into compliance and give governments more power. That’s something we’ve often heard from other coronavirus deniers and conspiracy theorists. Unsurprisingly, he’s selling a book as well. Here’s a clip from March that ticks off all the boxes:

It looks like the second wave is indeed descending upon Western Europe. Before anyone tries to compare this to the US and say “400+ is less than Alabama“ or whatever, the US is fucked. We are not a metric to judge anything against.

Now, in the context of 400+ in the Netherlands, that is a incredibly bad sign. 400 can be as little as a couple weeks away from 1000+ which as we have seen, gets very deadly very quickly. I’m starting to despair for our collective future.

[Torben Sondergaard] has been criticized for numerous things, including teaching that autism is caused by demonic possession and can be cured by immersion in water-filled trash cans, as well as claiming to be able to cure homosexuality, cancer and remove "the Spirit of Reiki Healing" from Reiki practitioners in the same manner[1].

Sřndergaard was living in Denmark until 2019, where Danish politicians stated that they would be looking into Sřndergaard's organization in Denmark and the potentially illegal actions carried out by it [2]. Shortly after this, Torben Sřndergaard left Denmark and has shut down his Danish organization and started a new one in the US by the name "The Last Reformation Inc."[3] Sřndergaard now falsely claims he is religiously persecuted in Denmark

It rules that people fleeing actual death and dismemberment in the Americas are subject to brutal treatment by the government while some eurotrash crank with an imaginary best friend gets to run around being Typhoid Mary. Shit fake continent, fuck off.

France started to do tests at airports from certain places and Belgium is imposing tests and mandatory isolation for a certain numbers of region in the EU itself (up to curtailing traveling there).

So far in France net numbers of people being hospitalised or in ICU beds is still down.

Lockdown was lifted over two months ago and while restrictions were eased... I suspect private gatherings may have something to do with it (and people being less stringent on precautions). I'm invited to a large wedding party at the end of the month... With the recent COVID suspicion I had, I'm honestly considering on passing on it. Sucks because it's friends I haven't seen in a long time. But I'd rather see them after in small committee.

Before that happens our sitting PM would lose the election early 2021 and you certainly wouldn't like the two clownshows that replace him.

You read that correct, unlike other countries, we have 2 clownshow parties waiting to take over when everything falls apart  :rejoice
Although at that point, I think Merkel simply can't handle another clownshow government to deal with and she just sends in the tanks.

My school's starting back tomorrow. As per the Oklahoma State Department of Education, masks are recommended but not required. Social distancing is going to be pretty limited due to space. Our hope is that because we're a small, rural school, we'll just get lucky and dodge the bullet, but as I overheard a coworker saying last week "If the Good Lord decides it's your time, it doesn't matter how many precaution you've taken."

Per capita they are amongst the highest in Europe both in cases and deaths. It's not significantly worse than France or Italy. People on long term care homes got it pretty bad IIRC (like in France). They're well ahead of Denmark, Norway and Finland.
They still come up in US conservative discourse. It's hard to really say anything conclusive.

Covid-19 cases in Sweden

We have roughly ten times as many deaths (currently ~6K) compared to our neighbors and our economy still suffered a lot. As VomKriege mentioned most deaths are from retirement/nursing homes. The health care system has been strained but never ran out of ICU beds.

I expect another wave of outbreaks this fall when kids are back in school, many adults have to return to the office, and travel opens up to the rest of the world again. Neither face masks or social distancing are being used by most people.

The government isn't issuing recommendations, only enforcing the recommendations coming from the apolitical Public Health Agency. So far, their line is that there isn't enough data proving that mandated mask use for the general population is substantially more efficient than the measures that are already being taken. Masks are still required for air travel and recommended for rail travel.

Right now our infectivity is at its lowest since late March/early April and death rates are still trending down. ICU numbers have stabilised at ~40 patients nationwide, with a change in how the statistics are measured. The downward trend can probably be largely attributed to our industrial vacation season: country pretty much shuts down in July, so offices are mostly empty and public transport in the bigger cities is not nearly as congested.

Also, Sweden's attendance limit for public events/gatherings stands firm at 50 people, while most of our neighbours have raised it to 500.

We'll see what August brings, when people start going back to work again, and some schools are reopening.

why is the government so hesitant to tell people to wear face masks? like, not even talking about enforcing them legally, just offering a suggestion?
Some reasons are more reasonable than others.
- There is a concern that using masks will reduce people's willingness to adhere to social distancing and stay home when they are sick.
- There is an unwillingness to admit that perhaps our current strategy isn't the greatest. The government, the Public Health Agency, and the health care system are all trying to dodge blame.

It's sort of interesting to see if we will follow a resurgence curve similar to what's happening in Belgium now, for instance. Similar population numbers but obviously Belgium has a higher population density due to smaller size. Here's the trend curves for cases for Sweden and Belgium (you can also switch to Reported Deaths in the top right):

https://aatishb.com/covidtrends/?scale=linear&trendline=false&location=Belgium&location=Sweden

Sweden has no mandatory recommendation for masks, but in Belgium, masks are mandatory on public transport, at airports, at hairdressers and beauty salons. They are also recommended in public whenever a distance of 1.5 meters cannot be maintained.

I am actually noticing all sorts of dumb news being signal boosted just to have something other than rona to talk about. I have seen no less than 4 fear pieces on sharks this weekend, finally a pivot to what we really need to be afraid of.

My younger brother who is a medical mess (and Trump supporter) went to a riverboat casino last night where they don't require face masks. It was apparently packed with people without masks. Neat.

Trump could not be blinded by looking straight into a solar eclipse nor is he gravely ill from eating nothing but McDonalds and well done steaks.
He nearly drinks no water, only Diet Coke, doesn't exercise except for a few rounds of golf and he barely sleeps. Plus he dodged all those STD's during the Vietnam war.

Whatever he's using clearly works.

CHANDLER, AZ — Parents who don't want their kids to be forced to wear a mask are looking for schools where mask-wearing is an option. Such is the case for Christy Raban, who tells ABC15 she felt like she was part of the "minority" when it came to her children having to wear a mask when they go back to in-person learning.

Raban and about 1,400 other parents are part of a social media group called 'Mask-free Schooling options' that looks for schools where mask-wearing isn't enforced.

"It's the fact that they need to go back to school in person and of course, not be wearing masks," says Raban.

Raban pulled her kids from Fulton Elementary and San Tan Junior High a few weeks ago, after Chandler Unified School District announced teachers and students would be wearing a mask while attending school. She searched school options and went with American Leadership Academy- Gilbert North primarily because of the flexibility on wearing masks.

"They are adamant about if a child wants to wear a mask, that child will be supported and if a child doesn't, they will be too...I'm looking forward to the change, having my kids there," added Raban.

Dr.Rachel Deathrage is a pediatrician who participated in a back-to-school online town hall session on ABC15's Facebook page. She took part in a re-opening task force for a Phoenix school district. During the town hall, Dr. Deathrage said masking is one of the key factors in containing the spread and advised the district that if they went back to school, students and teachers should be wearing masks.

"I know there are a lot of people who are fearful about who should be masking. I just want to reassure everyone that... the CDC already has guidelines that those under 2 shouldn't and those who physically can't remove a mask," said Dr. Deathrage.

ABC15 reached out to the American Leadership Academy to clarify whether they will make mask-wearing an option, given Governor Ducey's Executive Order where he states that schools both public and charter, should have mask-wearing mandates for in-person schooling.

In a statement, the charter school said, "It is not ALA’s intent to mandate a mask policy. However, if on August 17, we are required by law to enforce wearing masks, we will follow the law...we believe that parents are best equipped to make these decisions for the students."

After this statement was issued, we reached out to the ALA once again, asking if the executive order's language serves as the "law." ABC15 did not hear back from the ALA.

Rachel Deathrage? That's the most badass last name ever.

That's a first. The black plauge gives you immunization against covid? Wut.  :brain

I don't think there's any clear explanation yet as to why minorities tend to be more affected.

However, conceptually, that's not crazy - although the terms used here are wrong. Europeans have a slightly higher resistance against HIV infection potentially because of a now relatively common mutation that was selected for during the black plague epidemic(s).
