If you want to get rid of flab, core exercises are probably the best.  Elliptical machines are really only good for getting your cardiovascular endurance up, which is important but I have seen some chubsters at the gym that go for an hour on those things (like every time I see them).

Fuck me, you're an idiot.  You can't spot reduce fat by doing abwork.  Cardio = burning fat.

What core exercises do you recommend? I do crunches on the ab machine, mainly. 3 sets, 25 reps @ 80lbs. I really wanna get rid of that stomach flab.

NO! BAD!  YOU CAN'T SPOT REDUCE FAT!

(now, I do recommend abwork, but it won't reduce flab)

As Boogie says. Honestly, best thing to do to lose weight:

1. Eat healthier.
2. Cut down on sodas and such. Drink much more water. I recommend getting a big re-washable plastic cup/thermos to carry around a ton of water to drink throughout the day.
3. workout all your muscle groups. This will build muscle all over. That will increase your metabolism as your body will require more energy than it used to.
4. lots of cardio.

4 things that will help you lose weight.

Cool, thanks folks... seems like I'm on the right track, just need to cut back on eating. I have a pretty voracious appetite, but I don't drink soda/juice, only green tea and water.

Cool beans man. You can eat what you want, but remember this basic mantra:

Calories in vs Calories out

If you take in more than u burn off, ur weight goes up. You burn more, it goes down. Simple, no?

Also, just an example for you. You could eat a whole Wal-Mart Rotisserie chicken which could last u 2 meals and would have eaten less calories than a single whopper meal.

The ??? is consistency.  The first two weeks will suck but if you pull it off without any hitches, it becomes a habit from there.

As much as writing papers is the death of me, I gotta say when you actually get shit done and create things in an organized fashion it feels good!

But yeah, I'll avoid taking any classes with papers for the next year+ again after this ^_^

You are probably giving much better advice.  I've never worked towards actually losing weight but you do MMA so you probably know your shit.  I had flabby, toneless abs a couple years after high school though and doing a lot of core and some cardio got rid of that "flab".

In the "you don't know it until you try it" programming example of the day...

I was playing around with LINQ and extension methods and lambda expressions (because what else would you do with your free time) and decided I would try my hand at rewriting a standard query expression into a version that only uses extension methods and lambda expressions, because that is apparently how the compiler treats a query expression anyway. it will translate it to the extension/lambda method, and then further translate it from there. Anyway, for the purposes of my example, I have two classes, Product and Supplier.

Code: [Select]
        public class Product
        {
            public int ProductID { get; set; }
            public string ProductName { get; set; }
            public int SupplierID { get; set; }
        }

        public class Supplier
        {
            public int SupplierID { get; set; }
            public string SupplierName { get; set; }
        }

From there, declared a simple list of products and list of suppliers and provided some intial data.

Code: [Select]
            List<Product> products = new List<Product>()
            {
                new Product { ProductID = 1, ProductName = "Blue Widget", SupplierID = 1 },
                new Product { ProductID = 2, ProductName = "Red Widget", SupplierID = 1 },
                new Product { ProductID = 3, ProductName = "Yellow Widget", SupplierID = 2 },
                new Product { ProductID = 4, ProductName = "Green Widget", SupplierID = 2 }
            };

            List<Supplier> suppliers = new List<Supplier>()
            {
                new Supplier { SupplierID = 1, SupplierName = "BR Widget Company" },
                new Supplier { SupplierID = 2, SupplierName = "YG Widgets Inc" }
            };

And then performed a simple query expression joining of the two lists and wrote the output to the screen.

Code: [Select]
            // simple join using query expression, easy-peezy lemon squeezy, or something
            var query = from product in products
                        join supplier in suppliers
                        on product.SupplierID equals supplier.SupplierID
                        orderby supplier.SupplierName, product.ProductID
                        select new
                        {
                            ProductID = product.ProductID,
                            ProductName = product.ProductName,
                            SupplierName = supplier.SupplierName
                        };

            foreach (var element in query)
            {
                Console.WriteLine("{0}\t{1}\t{2}", element.ProductID, element.ProductName, element.SupplierName);
            }

And the results

Code: [Select]
1       Blue Widget     BR Widget Company
2       Red Widget      BR Widget Company
3       Yellow Widget   YG Widgets Inc
4       Green Widget    YG Widgets Inc

The next step was to mentally translate that into a version that only used extension methods. That version looks like this:

Code: [Select]
            var elements = products.Join(
                    suppliers,
                    product => product.SupplierID,
                    supplier => supplier.SupplierID,
                    (product, supplier) => new
                        {
                            ProductID = product.ProductID,
                            ProductName = product.ProductName,
                            SupplierName = supplier.SupplierName
                        }
                    )
                    .OrderBy(element => element.SupplierName)
                    .ThenBy(element => element.ProductID);

            products.Add(new Product { ProductID = 5, ProductName = "Purple Widget", SupplierID = 1 });
            foreach (var element in elements)
            {
                Console.WriteLine("{0}\t{1}\t{2}", element.ProductID, element.ProductName, element.SupplierName);
            }

Before I enumerated over the query, I added a new product to my list. Why? Because queries are not executed when they are declared, but rather when they are enumerated. I know because that's what I've read. But it's nice to know because that is also what I have tested. So the results...

Code: [Select]
1       Blue Widget     BR Widget Company
2       Red Widget      BR Widget Company
5       Purple Widget   BR Widget Company
3       Yellow Widget   YG Widgets Inc
4       Green Widget    YG Widgets Inc

But then I added another new Product. I knew that queries weren't executed until they are actually used, but I didn't believe they would be executed again. I expected that if I added a new product, the query would not know because it had already been executed with the prior enumeration.

Code: [Select]
            products.Add(new Product { ProductID = 6, ProductName = "Orange Widget", SupplierID = 2 });
            foreach (var element in elements)
            {
                Console.WriteLine("{0}\t{1}\t{2}", element.ProductID, element.ProductName, element.SupplierName);
            }

The result?

Code: [Select]
1       Blue Widget     BR Widget Company
2       Red Widget      BR Widget Company
5       Purple Widget   BR Widget Company
3       Yellow Widget   YG Widgets Inc
4       Green Widget    YG Widgets Inc
6       Orange Widget   YG Widgets Inc

That is why we test things we think we know. Because we might not actually know. Not only is the query not executed until it is enumerated (or otherwise needed), it is executed each time it is enumerated.

:themoreyouknow

edit: it's amazing all that is there that wasn't possible prior to C# 3. Auto-implemented properties, object initialization, list initialization, extension methods, lambda expressions, anonymous types, implicit typing, LINQ, etc. About the only thing compatible with C# 2 is the foreach statement and Console.WriteLine().

I studied till about 12pm last night, so I gave myself the day off to organize and clean my place up.  which translated into games/forums/internet for about 8 hours + 1 hour of cleaning. I'll probably get scared around 9pm and start studying again.

I spent all day trying to study o chem which just translated to eating mexican fast food and watching The Wire.  I'm only aiming for 60% on the final so I don't drop a letter grade but I'm still worried about getting that even.  It's like I'm trying to figure out how (for example) dipole moments matter in deciding the properties of a molecule and yet most  people who have taken this course can't remember much about what a dipole even is.  This is why I don't really study until the last second.

Saw Kaskade and Daishi Dance spin at Ageha last night, and both were great, in addition to the 4-5 OTHER DJs that were playing on the various other dance floors. I'd been there before, but I'd never explored beyond the main dance floor and the front bar. Little did I know there was a POOL in the middle of a dance floor outside and a fucking huge lake thing behind the club. It's like 5 clubs in one. Got home around 8 (wasn't sloppy drunk this time, what the fuck... I even bought WATER at the bar) after delicious, delicious McDonald's, woke up at 4.

Checked my mail on the way to dinner, and FINALLY...
