Never watched it when it was originally on. I tried to get into it a few years back. I watched a couple of seasons and I thought it was okay but it was hard to see what all the hoopla was over relative to current TV. I think its one of those things that maybe is important as a marker for TV changing but not necessarily the most enduring thing.

Buffy s1 sucks, s2 isn't too bad, s3 is good.

Firefly is a lot of of fun, naysayers are TheBusiness-level killjoys. As it turns out, Serenity, the Firefly movie, is also a killjoy.

People say Angel is really good, but I don't like Borneas enough to look into it, despite Charisma Carpenter appearing regularly.

Dollhouse starts off very weak, and quite uncomfortably. It's creepy. Then it gets quite interesting.

For reals?

Man, when I was in the USA in August, I found the boxed sets for $10 per season. I waffled and decided not to bulk out my dvd collection any further.  :'(

Homeland...

spoiler (click to show/hide)
seems to me they're trying to position Saul as the villain for much of this season.  I like this conceptually, but the execution is kind of blah.  Shaming a muslim CIA staff member for wearing a hijab?

Also I really don't care about Brody's daughter and her drama.  It's a great performance imo but it's not at all what I'm watching Homeland for.  Why do we still need to know what's going on with this family in the first place?

those are just some nitpicks though.  Way too early to judge the season either way.

Caught about 10 secs of Agents of Sheild. It looks hilariously awful.

It had nothing to do with the Marvel universe either. It was just some government agents trying to protect something on a plane. How the fuck does this show bring these ratings?

Is SHIELD getting good ratings? I know Disney/ABC is making a huge push with it, but the show on iTunes doesn't offer a season pass, which I usually assume means that finishing the season isn't a foregone conclusion.

Yep. This season has been really great from the start imo, probably because Mrs. Schroader hasn't appeared yet. Last night's episode was one of my favorites.

8.6 million viewers and it rose from last week which is very good. The episode was complete trash though, rarely a show puts so little effort in its second episode no matter no matter how terrible it is.  Even I could have written a better plot than that.

When I watched the premiere of SHIELD, I ended up sticking around to watch The Goldbergs afterwards. I have no idea why I did this, because the show has zero buzz.

...I kind of like it doe. It's basically your family sitcom, with a Wonder Years narration, and a Malcom in the Middle vibe. The characters are fun, the actors fit, and its overall enjoyable. It's been a better viewing than SHIELD.

The Blacklist is pretty good if you want a "rougher/darker" version of White Collar. Though it's mostly carried by James Spader being the fucking lizard king.

The reason Downton Abbey has faltered thus far:

(spoilers for S3 and S4)
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Matthew's death has clearly ruined the show's long term potential. S3's finale - not the Christmas special - presented quite a clear blueprint for the future: Matthew and Branson running Downton and continuing to battle against Robert's idiotic business views. Perhaps it could have even led to Matthew and Branson having a falling out which could have been interesting. Regardless there would be a lot of story potential there, inside politics, and drama without resorting to pure soap opera stuff.

Without Matthew we're left with a repeat of S1: the courtship of Mary. But it's less interesting now without...well, Matthew. Mary and Tom are now combating Robert, but even that hasn't really worked well. So with the overall main plot not working, the show is forced to focus on a variety of side stories, with Anna's rape being the big one. I think that will make for an interesting arc but to be fair it's just another case of Mr. Bates being fucked over.
[close]

I still watch because I love the characters and "feel" of the show, but the quality is rapidly declining. S1 is a legit great season of TV. S2 had many problems but still was watchable. And imo S3 was a return to glory for the most part. S4 is worse than S2 so far.

http://www.independent.co.uk/arts-entertainment/tv/news/ben-wheatley-to-direct-new-doctor-who-episodes-8879346.html

Quote
Ben Wheatley, whose works include "blood-soaked" fare such as Kill List and Sightseers, is the surprise choice to direct the opening episodes of the new series of Doctor Who.

Wheatley, who made his name with the crime thriller-turned-horror Kill List - described as a "gut-wrenching chiller" - has a cult following and has been championed as a rising star among British directors.

He will direct episodes of series eight of the long-running BBC show, which airs well before the watershed, and will star Peter Capaldi who takes the role from Matt Smith. They will air next autumn.

The director told Screen Daily: "I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct the first two episodes of the new series of Doctor Who. I've been a fan since childhood."

His Doctor is Tom Baker, he revealed. "I've been watching the current run of Doctor Who with my son and have discovered it all over again. The work that has been done is amazing."

His films, which are also known for being darkly comic, include Sightseers, described as "Nuts in May with axes," by film critic Mark Kermode; comedy crime drama Down Terrace, and the recent A Field in England.
