btw I checked the mortality rate because people were saying in April that increasing testing would cause the number to go down (reasonable)... and it's actually even higher than I remember: 3%. That's 30 to 60 times more dangerous than the flu.

People missed their co-workers, families, activities etc. after the lock down and started socializing again right when the summer started.
Most were outside, travel in most of Europe was allowed but indoor, events and group activities mostly cancelled. As we all know ventilation is key.
So people sitting outside drinking or sightseeing and city hopping wasn't a big risk.

Now they are returning to their poorly ventilated universities, offices etc. .
We should've fixed the ventilation issue but for some reason no one acted on it.

People also feel like we have to get back to work and most think that everyone will eventually catch it.
In general people have rejected the idea that social distancing should be permanent.

The restaurant I work at was absolutely packed last night. It’s so strange, people sitting at tables inches from each other with no masks on, eating, talking, sneezing, coughing without a thought. And this is where the kinda people who spend $40 on chicken or $100 on steak go to eat. Doctors come in after work, still in their scrubs with their id badges hanging from their shirt and literally start taking their mask off as they walk in the door. The suburban brand of privileged self-entitlement is so surreal right now. Luckily I requested to work on the patio only when I came back last month, which is super lucrative right now, but part of me feels like I’m selling my soul for these tips.

Germany has designated two Dutch provinces as 'orange areas'.
In other words, if you go there and return to Germany you have to go into quarantine.

Our government has not yet labeled these areas unsafe but is mulling additional measures.
A rumored measure is that bars should be limited to a maximum of 50 people and close at 01:00.

Went to the local sushi/ramen restaurant last night to see if they had outdoor seating available (we went a few weeks ago and we got one of 3 tables set up outside)... inside was absolutely PACKED, almost every table filled up, even in pre-pandemic I never saw it this full... the guy told me they weren't seating people outdoors anymore, so we left and got BBQ curbside.

Positive tests have been 1.4% in Suffolk, and we've barely overtaken Queens to become the #1 county in NYS for total cases. Active cases in NYS have been hovering around 62k for the last few weeks. Unfortunately my area has a huge SUNY school in there too which already has a few positive cases, and I feel that restaurants are gonna stop with the outdoor dining as the weather starts to get cooler...

That said, cases are falling in Sweden while everywhere else they are rising. I was also reading that some epidemiologists now believe it may have been the right strategy.

This is funny. I knew there would be this response. And what makes it funny is that I am pretty sure it is partisan. Like lockdown is a 'left-wing' position, and no lockdown is a 'right-wing' position. And weirdly enough, it kind of is like that in the US. So I kind of get it. But it has got to be the dumbest way to view a pandemic. Whatever though.
