think Witcher 2 will be less than 40% off during the sale?

Is there a demo of Witcher 2? Curious if it will run on the Prole Beast laptop.

Oooooohhhhh, so that's why you're on steam now and entering the PC gaming world :)

You should play The Witcher 1; it's super old-school wrpg design though so I dunno if that's your thing.

Witcher 1 with all the various patches [including the patch to add back in all that awesome nudity] is pretty great. Combat's a little wonky, the first few hours are a bit flat, and it drags a bit at times, but it's still a high quality WRPG with a lot of moral choices that are fairly murky [rather than Bioware's standard black and white].

Is it possible to buy games on one comp and then download them on another? If the winter sale happens before I get my shiny blingee new laptop in January I wanna just buy the gaemz using my current ghetto-ass pos. I realize this is the dumbest question of all time but I would like to know because I'm a) new to this, and b) literally distinguished mentally-challenged.

Yeah, you can do that. Steam does have an security mechanism in place for when you log in on a different computer, but they'll just send a code to your email that you have to type in.

Hell, you can buy steam games on your browser (even on your phone) and then install wherever. Most games allow installations on more than one PC as well.

That's pretty wild. I was expecting more stringent restrictions due to account sharing and whatnot, but I'm glad Valve allows me to spend money capriciously.

Saints Row 3 is $30 on Amazon with steam activation now.  Wonder if it'll be cheaper in the steam sale.

Either way looks like I didn't have to wait long to get my Saints Row on.

And it's gone up to $37 to match price with the steam sale :(

Waiting for steam sale was a bad idea in this case.  Seems like $30 was a mistake price.

Is there an easy way to backup Steam games to an external hard drive? I'm really running out of space on my primary, plus I was thinking of getting an SSD for main business and using my current 1 tera drive as a place to dump games.

Just find the game folders you want to back up and copy them over. It's that easy.

You can't actually PLAY them from anywhere other than the Steam folder, though.

I just checked and Steam folder is about 430 gigs.  EA/Origin folder is 35.  There are few others scattered about.

you want the free Steam Mover prog. Very very handy. The only prob is Steam STILL forces the initial DL to your primary OS drive, so to this day I still haven't installed shit like RAGE (20gb or so DL....). If anyone has a workaround for that other than you know, deleting the Windows directory, please let me know.

Only if you installed Steam on your primary OS driver. I've got Steam on my secondary drive and every game I download goes directly there.

Re: The Bore Steam Thread :monocle

For $2.50? I'd say yes. But I guess it depends on how much free time you have and whether or not you intend to play through multiple long, Western RPGs. If you've only got the time for one, and this will be just another game sitting there sad and alone in your Library, waiting for the day that will never come to be installed and enjoyed, then it might be a waste of $2.50.

Or, put another way, if time is more a concern than money, I might just jump right into Witcher 2. It's the better, more polished experience in my book. But 1 is definitely solid and worth playing.

It's long, like 40-50 hours long.  There is no quick travel.  Lots of running around doing errands like a wrpg without quick travel.

It's really quite good, but you gotta be prepared.

Also, I wouldn't play 2 without playing 1 since 2 builds on the first game.

The details are fascinating, I promise.

Anyway, back to the Witcher, it's a moot point since you already ponied up the big cash for it, but one thing of note is that -- and I could be alone in this -- I'm pretty sure that The Witcher 2 actually runs better than its predecessor on my PC. So, that would have been one more point in favor of skipping right to two. Nevertheless, I would agree that it's probably better to play the first anyway. Enjoy.

I'm still in the middle of the first one, about 25 hours in, early on in Chapter 4.  Chapter 1 is the biggest drag and the swamp sections later on suck too, but everything else has been great.  Chapter 1 has some good stuff, it's just way too much running back and forth.

That sounds about right. If memory serves -- and it may not since it's been a while -- but I remember really liking the fourth chapter. That's where you get moved to a completely different location, right?

Witcher 1 is on sale ALL THE TIME btw. This is important to realize about Steam. Unless you are planning on playing it inside the next few months, just hold off. It'll be on sale again.

Then again, you can't even buy one of your fancy beers for $2.50.

Kind of tempted, given the inclusion of Tokyo, and the ridiculous sale price.

I'm going to jump in when I get home. Not with the DLC though. Been playing Sim City HD on iPad and am desperate for some new city management stuff.

Probably won't get to play it tonight though.

Yeah, I've heard it's a good game and I'm sure it's worth $20 if you're a strategy fan.  Just seems a little strange it's priced so high considering the age.  Since it's one of the first Microsoft published games on steam I'm wondering if they're going to be bringing their games at premium pricing.  Will be curious to see Alan Wake's price.  Probably $40?  I'm gonna hold off on playing any further on the X360 version and play it on PC.
