Catching up on Space Dandy, still awesome.

Anybody who dropped the series early on is really missing out, and I mean that sincerely. What started out as a shakey space comedy with some amazing animation has slowly transformed into something really special over the course of its run. Some really hilarious episodes, some really poignant episodes, the constantly shifting crew of writers, directors, and animators has somehow managed to avoid letting one or the other have too much control while letting both have their own moments. Space Dandy is one of the few works of anime I've seen this decade that reminds of the golden age of OVAs from the mid-80s to the mid-90s, almost nothing else even comes close to this level of sheer exuberance for the medium.

It's an amazing show and it started out that way, too.  Quality has been consistent throughout.

I'd argue that, at worst, the first three episodes were rough around the edges in terms of narrative and humor and didn't hit quite as well as the episodes after that, but I definitely really enjoyed them either way.

JoJo's is on hiatus until January.   :noooo

It's amazing how little the first half of Stardust Crusaders contributes to the overall story.  I still enjoyed it, but they could have cut out at least half the episodes and it would have made no difference.

It's pretty bad. :fbm

I like the art style though. :fbm
It doesn't get better. Shit takes like half its run to get to the main plot. Some people at the time said this was better than Cowboy Bebop. Those people are fucking wrong.

Azumanga Daioh was the show that awared me to "moe". :rejoice

I rewatched it a few months ago, and it still pretty good. That early 2000's digital animation look is kinda scusting now, tho.

The ADV translation was pretty garbage, especially in the first two volumes. The Yen Press translation, from what little I read of it, was way better.

Huh, had no idea that was a thing. I have all the ADV press too, i guess I gotta keep supporting Yen Press' work.

Last episode of Baby Steps was alright, I guess. I looked up the manga and skimmed over to where this season ends since I'm too impatient to wait until Spring for season 2. Animation was faithful enough where I don't think I'll feel any difference reading it from here on.

Azumanga's anime looks fine to me. It's charming and simplistic.

Started rereading Kare Kano. Have so much nostalgia for this manga and anime. It's still my favorite romance manga too.

When does Gundam start?

I have to say that...I don't really consider myself an anime fan anymore. It sucks but I think I've grown out of it and that makes me sad. These days even when I watch a show that I think is good, like Jojo, I stop watching it. Nothing catches my attention anymore. I've made peace with that, but it shocks me because I've been a fan since 1997. That's a long time. Yet I keep watching and stopping, watching and stopping to try to bring back a joy of watching something I once loved. The anime these these days isn't even bad so I have no issues with quality. The interest just isn't there anymore.

Here's hoping tunes gundam is good, but I bet even that won't be able to keep my attention and I'll stop at like episode 4 or something.

I'm still big on manga, surprisingly. I guess that's just how hobbies go.

Man, I'm almost done with Zeta Gundam and I'm not impressed. Started out pretty awesome but now it's kinda average. It's just not very satisfying. Movie trilogy was better. Char's character in Zeta is far too meh. :fbm

Zeta gundam is one of the most overrated gundam. The first half sucks and is full of whiny children like Katsu. Zeta gundam doesn't get good until the mid 30-ish episodes until the incredible finale. There's only 10-14 episodes of Zeta that are actually great.

I was gonna give you shit for your Zeta opinion, but I can agree that Zeta only has 10-14 GREAT eps, but I still love the show because most of those are at the end and it ends so.damn.awesome.  Really has one of the most intense endgames of any Gundam full of badass fights, emotions and deaths.  The rest of the show is alright and Camille is a punk.

Zeta:

spoiler (click to show/hide)
Char vs. Haman was EPIC.  That final scene where he's got her pinned down and she goes for the funnels and the place explodes and you don't know what happens to them...two major power players in the UC world fighting 1:1 even; so intense and then a great send off.

Katsu & Rosamy were classic Tomino crazy folks running on emotions instead of logic.  Katsu suicide was totally in character.  The cat fighting with the two girls to the death was super Tomino and Kamille getting fucked because he's a punk was super satisfying and did a good job showing PTSD and war can do to the mind.
[close]

The thing is crazy Tomino imo is defined by a large cast of characters who don't make any sense and are all schizophrenic.  They get really emotional, make lots of stupid instant decisions and you never know what's going to happen because they are the furthest thing from predictable.  Are they realistic?  Only in the sense that Tomino worlds are inhabited by 90% crazy people.  But hell, it's different than the majority of shows out there and the unpredictability & willingness to just kill off anyone at a moments notice keeps stuff interesting and keeps that Tomino flair.  I mean even in Turn A half the dudes make no sense in their actions and just shout and scream and do random stuff...but it's entertaining!   :lol

I'm totally fine with people not liking Tomino; he's a love it or hate it guy, kind of like the dudes who make the Crank movies.  I enjoy his style and he gets credit for creating the series in the first place.  Plus Ideon.

Got Oct 2nd marked on my calendar for G RECONGUISTA Tomino comeback!

katz always sucked, though. and in the first half there's an entire episode where he steals a mobile suit. katz sucks.

the first half is boring. it's got a bunch of dumb stuff combined with the silly Four storyline which wasn't very good. The last 10 episodes have good escalation, and the series ends in a very, very depressing manner.

Anyone under 15 in Gundam typically sucks by design.  Except Judeau, I think he's like 14/15 or 16 and maybe Toby's that young too.  I think Garrod's like 18.

how was four storyline amazing? newtype science project number four escapes from newtype facility, falls in love with stupid punk kid with blue hair, pilots a gundam that's black, torches a city, and goes batshit. dies.

:zzz

The lala storyline in 0079 sucked too. Gundam and romance just doesn't make for good bed fellows. the only gundam romance stories i remotely like are in 0080 and 08th ms.

Read Baby Steps all the way up to Chp. 232. So glad to finally see Eiichiro have his comeuppance, the America arc was a fun read too. Hopefully he managed to stick to it and win a tournament this time!

Also found and read through One's run of Onepunch-man. Laughed my ass off at just about every chapter. :lol :lol :lol Will have to go through the remake soon enough, this is good stuff.

Reading through the Space Brothers manga at a nice pace cause the anime hiatus had me depressed. I was just about ready to skip through the Hibito in Russia arc cause it's boring as hell, but I was surprised to see that it's only like 2 chapters long in the manga.

Skipped it anyway.   :piss Hibito :piss2
