That said, everyone should watch Oshiete! Galko-Chan.  12 eps on Crunchyroll (only a few minutes long each) and one 30 minute OVA.  It was great.

Finally got around to watching one punch man. It was good. Sort of like a reverse version of my hero academy.

Are there plans for a second season of it?

So I've mostly just watched some original anime movies, but I wanna try some shows. I know many of the "big titles" that everyone should watch but I don't know where to begin. No high school trash, gimme that dark shit instead. Or just anything good. Nothing long either, I can't handle a billion episodes since it's too hard to pay attention. 15 eps or below should be good. Need recommendations - pls halp. ;-;

One of the best first episodes of an anime ever. Everything you need to get about the show, everything it's trying to say or will go on to say is all there in the first ep. It's basically the thesis statement for the entire show.

If you want a dark anime Rurouni Kenshin is good. It's light but has some nice dark sides. Although I suppose it's not really dark by anime standards... :doge

And I almost forgot to recommend one of the best anime.

Also, who refers to Cowboy Bebop as "dark anime," if that's the comparison you're trying to make?  It's also not in the same genre as Rurouni Kenshin, so...

Longer shows that are still good:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex [Bit of a time investment but a incredibly good scifi series]
Planetes [hard scifi about a group of people who collect garbage caught in Earth's orbit]
Excel Saga [weird, stupid parody of basically everything you can think of]
Outlaw Star [it's kinda like Cowboy Bebop but different and not quite as good, but still pretty good]
Mushishi [a fantasy world where a guy helps people deal with the weird creatures who live in it, one of my all-time favorites]
Darker than Black [the story of Chinese Electric Batman]
Psycho-Pass [future-Japan is controlled by a computer that determines if people have criminal tendencies or not and then has them arrested or killed]
Space Dandy [a bunch of animators are given complete control to do whatever they want in each episode]
Black Lagoon [Japanese mercenaries shooting stuff up in Thailand]

Shorter shows that are good:

Paranoia Agent [total mind screw, a messed up show with messed up people]
Macross Plus [Top Gun: The Anime]
Kino's Journey [A philosophical journey with a girl and her talking motorcycle, way better than that sounds]
Golden Boy [best fan service show ever made]
Serial Experiments Lain [dark meditation on the invasion of technology into people's lives]
Gun Smith Cats [America: The Anime]
Hellsing Ultimate [Ultra-violence, Nazi vampires, super-slick animation]
Blood Blockade Battlefront [People in NYC have to live alongside creatures from another dimension]
Detroit Metal City [The over-the-top front-man of death metal band is actually a sensitive guy who just wants to write folk music, top-tier comedy]
Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt [if Adult Swim teamed up with anime]
Level E [an alien prince comes to Earth just to troll people]
Armitage III [Robots on Mars want rights too]
Dominion Tank Police [Future-crime is so bad that the police now use tanks, with predictable results]
Cyber City Oedo 808 [three criminals are released from prison and tasked with stopping future-crime to lessen their sentence]
Bubblegum Crisis [80s anime plus 80s music]

Threw in some old stuff and some new stuff. Go nuts.

25 or less would be fine, it doesn't matter as long as it's fast paced and I enjoy it~

Gonna start with Cowboy Bebpo but I probably need another one as well. Heard a lot of good things about Paranoia Agent (plus I'm a sucker for Satoshi's movies), so I'll start with those two.

Rumbler list is fine, I'd throw in Samurai Champloo. I'd second Toku on FLCL. I would personally add a couple of other Gainax series but I can probably wait (it's starting to be borderline crazy/trash).

I also liked Dennou Coil and the whole augmented reality stuff, but it's an high school setting (though a rather sensitive, not cringy, one).

Is the old stuff (as in pre-90) out of bounds ?

I'd add The Irresponsible Captain Tylor (26 episode TV series + 10 OVAs) to the list.  It's a fun, more light-hearted show about a lazy idiot who becomes captain of a space ship during a war with an alien race. Dunno how easy it is to find though.

Scrap Gunsmith Cats from that list.  It's "meh."  (But the manga version is great)  Watch the true classic, Riding Bean, which it came from, instead. :pimp

If you like Cowboy Bebop a lot, definitely watch Samurai Champloo after that.  It's from the same people.

Watched the first season of attack on titan.

Meh. The core mystery is okay but the plotting is kind of obnoxious and the self serious tone it has with characters constantly monologuing is grating.

I'll watch another season to see if it keeps moving but if this extends into a crazy number of episodes, I'm out.

Also scrub question: Where is the best place to download animu? Is XDCC still superior? I need to be careful since torrenting anime in Japan is pretty risky, so DLL would be my best option.

I felt sorta the same way. The animation quality is nice, but goddamn is Eren ever an annoying twat. I know the series goes on to take him down a peg at every opportunity which is nice, but honestly he really just should have died when got eaten. Fuck bullshit shonen powers in a decidedly non-shonen series.

Probably. No idea what the best places for older stuff are, but I'm sure someone here can point the way.

For recent stuff: horriblesubs.info

Nyaa.se, my go to torrent recommendation is gone anyway (owner got spooked by new legislation and burned it all down). There are successors, but I don't know which 'won'.

I really love Trigun, but I can see some people not liking it. Vash can be a really love/hate kind of character and a lot of episodes in the middle of the series suffer some major animation issues. Still, when the main arc kicks into high gear in the second half of the series, it's pretty great. Oh, and absolutely stellar soundtrack, one of my all-time favorites.

And the movie's alright. A bit inconsequential, but well made.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking of when I thought of older anime (among others). In fact if you like FLCL and Gunbuster, you should probably try Diebuster too.
Speaking of Gainax I notice there's a classic no one mentioned yet...

Anyway, I started watching Gurren-Lagann since it's on Netflix. I like it so far but I'll wait to reach the end to see if it's Diebuster-good (it seems to follow the same path of absurd escalation) or Abenobashi Magical Shopping Street-average (the latter had its fair share of moments but I didn't like the end very much).

Watched the first episode of Paranoia Agent last night. It's only one episode so I can't say much about it yet, although I found it really interesting and will watch more today. Kinda shocking how hard it was to find now that Nyaa was nuked! Couldn't even find it on Rizon, or any torrent website (TS had it but no seeders). Anyway I thought I lucked out until I checked Youtube.

Watching the show gave me a strong urge to re-watch Monster, for some reason. I never finished that but now I wanna give it another go.

I finished Gurenn Lagann : So I read it was supposed to be a command for what was thought as a timeslot for youth audiences ? I dunno, but it certainly feels like it. While there was all the expected Gainax craziness, effortless use of different graphical styles brought into a cohesive whole (they really thought that whole drill thing heh ?) , a decent cast & affectionate throwbacks to the genre conventions pushed to the most absurd limit (Dawg I heard you liked mechas so we put mechas in your mechas), catchy songs (ROH ROH FIGHT THE POWER  :noah )... Can't help but feel that Diebuster was the superior version of the whole thing. Diebuster explored pretty dark places with regards to child-soldiers / child-stardom & rape and it had a rich relationship between its two protagonist that made the thing work and touching. In contrast to that, Gurenn Lagann visual spectacle starts to feel empty -and busy for the sake of it- by the end with a dense cast of characters being paper thin and competing for screentime. Their relations feel tame & superficial (Creepily sexy young female protagonist of ambiguous age romances are kinda... there.) for the most part and while I am not the biggest stickler for plot tightness, it's very weak in several points.

spoiler (click to show/hide)
The time skip especially really don't make a lot of sense. Even turning a blind eye to "humanity going from cave dwelling to scifi utopia in 7 years" for the sake of the spirit of the message; you have half the characters having had a radical change of temper, half being exactly the same and almost everyone acting as if they barely knew each other better than the episode before the ellipsis. I understand that it is an inescapable problem with this trick and that a fiction has to take a lot of shortcuts but it's jarring here. New Movie Evangelion 3.3 was more elegant in its approach, by having the stunted development built in the story itself.

Anyway, it's really hard to top Gunbuster/Diebuster here.

Still a good series, but not in my favorites from the studio.

I like GL because it's not dark and matoor.

Oh hey child soldiers and giant mechs... yawwwwwnnnn.

Give me some fucking levity.

 ???
Have you seen Diebuster ? It's not "dark and edgy". In fact I use it as a comparison point because it's exactly as Gurenn Lagann is (or well, modern Gainax) : colourful, fun, exciting, full of spectacle (not to mention the plot outline is pretty much 1:1). I used those examples to point that the character were well rounded and had some depth to them (it often means taking a look at the unsavory stuff). I honestly didn't find the characters in GL very compelling (Nia in particular is vapidness made cartoon) and beyond that not much levity either, the pondering on the limits of will and determination is like a footnote in the entire thing.

The bathhouse episode was great tho.

So dark  :-\

I hated Diebuster when I saw it 10 years ago.

All good, I believe it's a divisive series. I love it to bits but it's really so over the top I see how it could get on one's nerves.

I loved GL but for some reason never watched all of Diebuster. Should fix that.

There's one thing with Diebuster : you must have seen Gunbuster firsthand.

Has there been any ~super memorable~ anime released in the past 5 years? I dunno if Attack on Titan and One Punch Man counts?

Thanks~

I started watching Death Parade and One Punch Man but for some reason never finished. Honestly I already know a lot of anime that "everyone should watch" but I just don't have time or patience. Tough lyfe. ;-;

Has there ever been any indication of a new season of Panty and Stocking? I really enjoyed that when it aired.

Gainax keeps throwing out teases for a new Panty & Stocking [and new Gunbuster] every year or so, but nothing ever materializes.
