Ended up getting the Japan BD of Your Name to lend around to non-anime watching friends. Rewatched it last night and liked it even more than the first time in the theater. Definitely in my top anime films with Satoshi Kon's Millenium Actress, Jin-Roh, Spirited Away and End of Eva.

And Sword of the Stranger. I always forget that one (which is pretty funny because I translated & subbed it back at release). One of those pretty much perfect genre films that will always hold up.

I saw that Crunchyroll added Scrapped Princess. I've never watched it but was spoiled on the twist at some point. I think I'll dive into it next.

I'm happy they're adding older shows (I guess it's because of the funimation deal?)

I saw a scene or two of Princess Mononoke when I was a young lad. Tonight I watched the whole thing from start to finish.

It doesn't quite take Spirited Away from me as "best anime movie" but fuck it comes close. Masterful and deliberate from start to finish, despite being pretty damn long (for an animated film.)

Princess Mononoke was the first anime I pirated

I was a freshman in college with high speed internet for the first time and someone uploaded it to the dorm's public network (or something along those lines). I was blown away and it's still one of my favorites. I have it on dvd in a box somewhere these days, need to dig it out.

15 years ago I watched Cowboy Bebop and thought it was one of the best things I'd ever seen in any medium. When I asked people what other anime I should watch at the time, a lot of people suggested Outlaw Star. I watched about 7 episodes and thought: "This ain't no Cowboy Bebop" and stopped.

So this week for whatever reason I decided to watch the whole thing. It's fine. I mean it's of its era which is both good and bad. Time has allowed me to not be as harsh on it as I once was. It's fun enough and enjoyable enough and the characters do eventually grow on you.

That's kinda how I felt when I watched back in the Toonami days [I think I watched the whole thing, or at least almost all of it]. It was alright, but a big step down from Cowboy Bebop. I rewatched it a few years ago, though, and I ended up enjoying it a lot more. In part I think it's a lot easier to appreciate it considering shows of it's kind have gotten pretty rare over the years.

Universe 6 arc felt stakeless and more like "your favorite characters are back and hanging out again" type of revival stuff, which is cool. But Goku Black arc actually addresses how shit changed, has some character development, shit happens, etc.

Not quite up to the highs of DB or DBZ yet, but it's good on it's own. Definitely better than GT and I'm glad it exists just to wash away whatever that trash was.

I know Toriyama wasn't involved with GT and it isn't really canon, but fuck that show anyway.

Universe 6 is really just the introduction to something much, much bigger.

I've been watching You're Under Arrest. Just watched the episode were Aoi turns down a marriage proposal, and wow that was a genuinely touching episode. :'( I can't believe this is an anime made in the 90's, most anime's idea of a transwoman is having a burly guy in a dress for a gag. Aoi does end up as the butt of jokes occasionally (it is an anime from the 90's) but overall her character is handled pretty well imo.

I think Laputa is my favorite Ghibli movie, but Mononoke Hime may have supplanted it over successive viewings.

Psycho Pass s1 was pretty amazing. Starting s2 now, but I can't see it being anywhere near as good. Plus the number of episodes are cut in half.

I finished Psycho Pass s2 today. It got more interesting as it went on and turned out to be pretty good in the end, but it still wasn't near s1's level. Now I gotta find the movie since it's not on crunchyroll.
