I mean, I like Star Wars and shit and I grew up with the original trilogy, collecting the figures and just general Star Wars worship, but the prequel trilogy (and adulthood) cured me of trying to hand wave the bad stuff.

Everything outside Liam Neeson and Darth Maul has been pretty shit since the end of Return of the Jedi quite frankly.

The Last Jedi was super bad and The Force Awakens is some pretty poor film making, but what can you do when you have two fucking awful scripts and a studio trying to shovel in as much nostalgia as possible? Persecution of gay people by law enforcement on many countries has totally being a thing. Hiding your sexuality also takes a toll on people. Saying that is “easy to hide” being gay sounds like a particularly shitty over simplification.
