Why wouldn't they? I doubt they are too scared of the Knicks or the Nets taking their #1 seed or beating them in the playoffs. 80% effort should be fine 'til playoff time.

Knickerbockers has a historical context and it's unique. The Pelicans is just another animal name, and a bad one at that. like the Hornets, Bobcats etc. No one should think having a new animal name right now is a good idea.

There was some rumors that in the negotiatins to get the Jazz name back things got ugly and there were pointless threats of lawsuits or some such that caused some bad blood and the whole thing was shelved. Utah Jazz doesn't make a lick of sense, but at least it has nonsense working for it. The Pelicans makes sense in a "who gives a fuck" sort of way.

At this point the Utah Jazz is like the LA Lakers: a name that made sense before the franchise moved, which is now ironic if anything, but the team itself has enough history that you wouldn't want to change it. If the Jazz get good you'd like to see some continuity with the Stockton/Malone days.

I'm with BrandNew on the name. Even though I usually don't like singular team names, the New Orleans Brass would be much better.

Not my team so I don't actually really care but Pelicans is pretty awful. I just have a hard time seeing kids all around the nation asking their parents for "pelican" gear.

Sports Team names should either be ferocious, or iconic, or the very first thing when you think of a city. (Ignoring the weirdo ones that have become iconic because a team moved from somewhere else with it)

The Miami Dolphins is kinda of a weird name but dolphins are iconic in our culture. Pelicans aren't. It's like naming your team after the state flower or something.

I don't mind the name, but I think it would be a disaster from a merchandising standpoint. I can't imagine any 18 year old kid wanting to wear pelican gear. Unless he was being ironic.

Stern said in an interview there were 4 other team names that were approved, so they might switch it up if the backlash is bad.

No Nash, no Pau, half a Dwight, no bench...yeah they're atrocious relative to what I expected. The bench is the only thing you can really blame the front office for though. It's mystifyingly weak after being a contender for years now. You have to think a few veterans will sign up on the cheap if they pick up in a couple of months but they may be consigned to the 8th seed or something even then. They're like 8 games back of the Grizz now!
