It took 6 weeks but NC finally approved my unemployment. It was a god damned nightmare because I had just moved from out of state and had basically made no money in NC during their income assessment period. I called the same hopeless number that just said “Due to Covid19 we are experiencing higher than normal call volumes. Please call again at a later time.” My dudes, I called this number for 6 weeks. I never got through. I drove to the dept of labor in the freaking state capital (about an hour drive) they only had forms to fill out with a space to leave your phone number, they never called. I appealed my determination with proof of income via the website. Never a response.
I was so frustrated, like I couldnt give up, I literally had all the time in the world to take care of this, and I tried but it was total radio silence and I was starting to get kinda angry. It all felt super hopeless and I started doing the kind of math no one wants to do. The, how long do we have until the number hits zero, kind of math.
Anyway, sorry for the blog post, I’m just super relieved. The thing is, I have spent next to nothing over the past 6 weeks out of fear I would be destitute by winter and I am about to get back paid 300 state+600 federal per week for those 6 weeks. That’s like my actual income. And who the fuck knows when restaurants will open up again so I could be riding this gravy train to its final destination which is like end of July.
