Still have yet to play the original.  Since it doesn't run so well on my PC, I was thinking about just getting it again on 360 (I got the PC version for free anyway), but at this point I guess I should just go for 2.

I think the combat looks really good. They've kept much of what made DA:O origins good and also added a more visually engaging feel to it.

+ hit detecton: if you're swinging your sword against one enemy, any other enemies that are caught in the vicinity of your swings will get hit.
+ movesets look unique to each class, and more importantly, actually look fun to pull off.
+ streamlined conversation system, looks like they've taken a page out of Alpha Protocols dialogue choices.
+ a UI that looks quicker to navigate, especially when picking up loot, and comparing it to your stock.
+ the look of the game is more stylized as well. Not as generic as Origins, more of a unique feel.

If this is as engaging as I hope, it may be hard to go back to DA:O's battle system, as it actually looks dull in comparison.

High-res screens of some new areas, in links.

seriously most people in that thread sound is if they'd be more than happy with another expansion pack. always whining about something or other - "boo hoo there's to many aoe spells" or "look at these N64 textures on some random geometry I had to zoom in 600% on to show".

look at those screens I posted previously  and tell me they don't look better than DAO, and even then that's the game running on medium settings without dx11.

All you can do is mock it. These people exist in a niche where they think they have the only opinions that matter and the group think there only works to reinforce those entrenched positions. Their nuttiness only works to foster more nuttiness.

Played the demo.  I uploaded a batch of pictures onto Steam here.

*Game looks slightly better than the original, but nothing drastically so.  I didn't realize that I could activate DX 11 until later on in the demo (hence why earlier screenshots look worse than later ones).  Not all the graphic options were available, but some of them (SSAO in particular) made my system chug.  Only PCfag kings like Smooth Groove will be able to max out the game in DX11 with 60 FPS.
*The combat is exactly the same as the first game.  Combat wasn't dumbed down, only sped up.  The faster pace of combat is actually a good thing.  Animations look more cartoony, but the gameplay is more fun.
*The removal of an overhead camera is *awful*.  The field of view is very limited.  Every time I tried to target a specific NPC, I would always scroll my mouse wheel and get frustrated because I couldn't target exactly what I wanted.
*The demo only let me play on normal difficulty and I still nearly died to an ogre miniboss.  I think there will be a good challenge on nightmare.
*I didn't pay attention to the story (because I couldn't understand it) but the dialogue options are essentially ripped from Mass Effect.

If the overhead camera was retained, then DA2 would be a clear improvement over the original.  As it stands, the core gameplay has improved, but the camera does present alot of problems.

I'll grab the complete edition for $20 during a Steam sale.

Thanks for the impressons, Archie. I think I read somewhere that bioware didn't include the overhead camera because they didn't want to focus on geometry twice over, essentially redoing assets if a game area looked okay with one camera but didn't with the other, thus saving a lot of manhours to concentrate on other things. It sounds like a fair concession, given the time constraints compared to DAO,  but I'd rather get hands on time with it before making any judgements.

But if that's the only negative, it already sounds like the best game ever.

Some German reviews

Quote
PC Games 88, pros and cons:

+ very well told hero story
+ varied followers, each with their own stories
+ great dialogs with moral decisions
+ exciting boss battles
+ martial-arts-fans should have great fun with possibly the fastest (or fast paced) battles in a fantasy game

- ...but old-school RPG players might have their problems with the flurry of activities in battles
- limited class progression with fixed skilltrees
- poor level design with one-to-one copy-pasting of whole quest areas
- unsatisfying ending

Gamestar 87, pros and cons:

+ thrilling storyline
+ great dialogs and quests
+ coherent / consistent game world

- some fiddly battles
- less epic than DAO

There might be, I guess we'll find out tomorrow.

Weird that they will enable gamepad support for DA but not Mass Effect on pc, feels incongruous to the types of games they are. Maybe they are trying to tell us something though, :sadface.

This reply ain't directed at you particulary, but mostly at the vitriol spouted by the GAF hivemind about DA2 the last week:-

Whose to say Witcher 2 won't have those exact same problems, or more? Just 'cause they showed some nice looking screens, don't mean it's gonna be some kind of rpg masterpiece.

Original Witcher hardly lit the world on fire with its combat mechanics and I doubt the sequel would either. Witcher 2's combat is inspired by Batman: Arkham Asylum for starters. That may sound good on paper, but if they can't pull it off - and let's be honest, not many developers can - it'll be a fiddly, frantic affair, unsuitable for rpgs. So if you think you might have some problems with the "flurry of activity" during battles in DA2, Witcher 2 should be the last place you should be looking to get your next wrpg fix.

I read that the combat in Witcher 2 was inspired by Demon's Souls  ???

Bad combat mechanics are a staple of the western RPG genre, IMO. Rarely have I played a western RPG with combat that even comes close to the level of balance or strategy of some of the Japanese greats. The reason why The Witcher was heralded as such a great game wasn't because of the combat (it... got the job done, at least), but because of its gritty/detailed/original setting, and difficult choice/consequences... 2 things that Dragon Age doesn't really have going for it.

I would disagree with your point about wrpg combat, but that's a personal preference.

I agree with your assessment of the original DA's weaker points, especially in regards to story. However, all signs point to improved choices, better storytelling, and a more unique artsytle in DA2. It may be hard to believe for some people, especially at GAF - but this is a sequel and they did address some of their biggest complaints, namely how generic the look and setting of the game was.

1. Demo doesn't include high res textures.

2. You start out with high level abilities in that section, just to mess around a bit before starting the game proper.

I tried the demo on xbox although I played the original on PC and will play this one on the PC also. The PC demo was taking too long to download so I'll just try it this evening when the traffic dies down. Decent length demo for nowadays which is nice. A lot of it is cutscenes but still I feel like I was able to get a sense of the game.

Since I was playing on the xbox I decided to play it like an action game and you know. It's not bad. I mean its not good in any action sense. You would never buy it or play it, if the main draw was as a purely action game, but as a simple fun way to be a wizard or something in a deeper rpg like this its not bad. The flaw for me though is how active and engaged you have to be for what is essentially tedious combat. You have to sit there spamming a button on a boss to attack where as when you play it like a real rpg, the attack bits are automated. So you only have to engage yourself at critical moments which is the way I would certainly prefer to play it.

Like I said, I'll try the PC demo this evening and comment on that.

Okay that was a good length demo.

Game has lot more particle effects moving about than its predecessor, they've certainly upped the ante in terms of the visual flair of abilities now. Sometimes you'll pause the game just to gawp at all the debris, magic and gore flying about the screen. Also added bump maps, specular maps, motion blur, etc. However, dx11 is not available in the demo. Definitely a step up from Origins.

Played the demo as a rogue, some gameplay points:

- you can now strafe around a targeted enemy just by pressing left/right movement buttons, there is no need to adjust position/view like in Origins.
- the timing of abilities are more important now, as some rogue skills enable you to outmanoeuvre an incoming attack, not just deal damage, e.g., backstab is an ability now: the rogue auto shifts behind an enemy and stabs him, so if an ogre is about to pummel you at that moment, he will miss
- archers auto melee if enemies get too close, no need for the player to switch weapons
- skill trees are similar to origins, but instead of linear progression, you can choose branching paths - most early abilities are the same as Origins, ie pommel strike, mind blast
- pausing is more useful playing on normal than in Origins as battles are quicker paced and it felt like ability cooldowns were shorter as well

Okay, now, combat definitely feels slightly different to Origins. There is a lot more to keep track of I feel, even though you only have a few abilities in the demo. The fact that battles are faster paced with a lot more animation cycles, not to mention that abilities feel weightier, coupled with the fact that smaller enemies fall quicker (but come more often) means you will always be navigating you're surroundings, putting more thought into your orders. Where Origins battle system harkens back to old-school mechanics, this feels like it takes those mechanics, decorates it with some contemporary ideas based on manoeuvring, hit-detection and animation, and modernises the system. It's up to your tastes if you think this is an embellishment or an upgrade. I'm tepidly leaning towards the latter.

Brief mention on the conversation system. I like it. It feels a lot more dynamic - shit actually happens and drama unfolds instead of half-heartedly going through a list of options with your index finger usually resting on the Esc key, as was the case in Origins. A lot more cinematic as expected.

Some screenshots I took

What are you saying Stoney, the 360 combat is broken?

The 360 is my only option for now or Ill have to skip it till further notice. Demo is so slow downloading...argh!

The combat isn't broken per se. Although I did find it kinda easy. But then it was on normal. I was more saying that if you play it like an action game with the new stuff they have implemented you constantly have to mash the A button to attack with the occasional button press with a special ability. That part can get a bit tiresome but the combat is a lot faster than the prior game so its faster than it would have been theoretically in the original Dragon Age. It was definitely playable. It was just very button mashy which against bosses might be a little tiresome. But I also found it kind of neat. Like I wanted to experiment trying to play all the classes.

The combat is enjoyable in sort of the same way (probably better actually) that shooting a gun in fallout 3 or new vegas is. Meaning that if you judged it solely on its base mechanics it's not good but in relation to being an added thing in an already deep rpg its decent enough. Not sure if my explanation makes since but for Dragon Age Combat its fine. It's not trying to be Ninja Gaiden or something or a real fighting game.

I guess you can also play combat the old way on the console like in the first but since I didn't play it on consoles I didn't know how to do that.

I havent been keeping track, is there any use of DAO savegames in the sequel? (like in ME)

Yes. Supposedly some of the decisions will factor in but I don't think it will be at the level of Mass Effect.

That comparison to Fallout shines some light on the matter, for me shooting the gun was a last resort.

Like I said i think its a bit better than that but the analogy still sort of holds. If Dragon Age Origins was simply a walk around beat em up. You wouldn't buy it.

But with all the other stuff its relatively fine. It's kinda neat to be able to move around the battlefield with any character and jump into the action or play any role. Even though I'm going to play it on PC because I want to play it like I played the first, I was kinda intrigued a bit to try the action part. I would consider doing a second playthrough for instance via the action side.

The best thing of course would be to give it a try and then give your own impressions.

Combat (in the PC version at least) is a lot more fun and deep than shooting in Fallout 3/NV. Which is a good thing as you got no choice but to do a lot of it - those darkspawn folk are really a very disagreeable sort.
