wall street and washington know what the fucking problem is. fuck, ANYONE capable of doing a marginal amount of research knows what the sources of our economic travails are: subprime lending and mortgage speculation, treacherous accounting practices, alan greenspan, poor fund diversification and risk mitigation, and gross currency mismanagement. obama is right: we need someone who can actually MAKE the hard calls instead of dithering about with a "commission" to research the patently obvious.

actually, the answers are pretty easy, too: bring back the financial and trading regulations from the pre-reagan days; enforce stronger accounting and accountability practices in the brokerage and fund management sectors; repeal the capital gains cuts; shore up the estate "death" tax; and make the dollar WORTH something by taxing the fuck out of offshore and outsourcing investments and redressing the trade imbalance. GET SOME FUCKING MONEY BACK IN THE BANK INSTEAD OF PRINTING PAPER.

america will have no money -- your dollar won't be worth SHIT -- if the fed has nothing to back investments. you do NOT have a financial infrastructure if your government cannot maintain the value of its dollar relative to other markets in the vast and complex web of fiat currency. take your pick: taxes on the wealthy and corporate (i.e. not you or 97% of americans), or a dollar that won't buy ANYTHING. the more other nations buy our t-bills, the less power our dollar has, inflation becomes stagflation, and you pay $150 for a cup of coffee. hey, motherfucker, it happened in 1929.

taxes are GOOD. (and don't go quoting orwell, because you don't KNOW orwell, motherfucker.) taxes keep the fed solvent, and make us more financially independent as a nation. without YOUR tax dollars, there would be no fannie mae bailout, there would be no fdic insurance for your savings account, and you'd have NOTHING IN YOUR FUCKING BANK ACCOUNT tomorrow morning.

Oh Lordy.  Two sentences that are dead giveaways someone doesn't have a clue:

"We should appoint a bipartisan commission to study the issue."

"I would appoint a policy czar."

It sounds very serious and thoughtful but it's really just passing the buck to someone else.  "We should find someone smart and have them figure it out."  If you're campaigning to run the country then it's an abdication of your duty to make decisions.

Besides it's not like these problems have a universally fair and painless solution just waiting for a bunch of old men to discover.  There are conflicting priorities and interests at work and it's the job of our political leaders to balance them, not to call on a mythical council of elders.  King Solomon ain't walking through that door.

Too soon to tell if it will impact the GOP campaign negatively.  It is all just shock at first but that doesn't necessarily mean that she will bring down McCain.  Not knowing what the Bush doctrine is might have cost her a half point of disfavor at most.  However, Palin is not the bright shiny new toy in the campaign anymore.  Although I wish it was because people are getting tired of the constant lying, I haven't seen any Palin supporters be vocal about her bullshitting.

In short, I think people are just getting used to her

Nah.  I wouldn't say Obama's proposal had a big impact on the process, but his plan was much, much closer to the bill that was passed than Hillary's or AFAIK any of the Republican candidate's.

I remember cause I was actually paying attention at the time.  Krugman liked Hillary's plan but Brad DeLong said Obama's was much more likely to pass through Congress unscathed and be immediately put into action.  Which turned out to be true.

The worm has turned in the election now.  McCain went to bed Sunday thinking he had things under control, but the combination of his continued lying and the financial meltdown has forced the narrative onto "McCain is a liar and the economy is disintegrating, lolz he JUST SAID YESTERDAY that the 'fundamentals were strong'".  Add in some awesome gaffes by his economic advisers and the fact that we'll still be talking about the economy tomorrow because of AIG and it's shaping up to be a shitty week for McCain.

1. the fed needs money for this country to be solvent, especially in this age of heavily internationalized business and monetary policy. you have two options: a) taxes; or b) printing money. please choose the one that doesn't cause inflation. you know, the one democrats USUALLY try to choose. for bonus DIRTY LIBRUL points, choose who gets taxed the most. for CRAZY AUSTRIA points, pick an alternate currency to adopt, or a ridiculous standard to tie our monetary policy to.

2. because the bush doctrine has protected our interests so very well these last eight years! to its wonderfully naive and short-sighted credit, it has galvanized anti-us and anti-democratic sentiments around the globe, caused our common partners to view us with distrust, and to rack up a massive bill that can only be alleviated through the options presented in 1).

3. (me: jesus christ!) obama is moderate. and if you feel you are entitled to some arbitrarily large percentage of your "gross income" as you know it, and are unable to distinguish in any practical capacity between your strictly on-paper gross income and the reality of your net income, preferring to stew in bitterness over the fact that somewhere in the delta lies a slightly larger television set or a fancier set of kenneth cole chinos or a vacation in the caymans instead of oahu, FUCK YOU. certainly, the government does not owe you a job or owe you health insurance, but without the government, you would not HAVE a job, and there is nothing preventing you from engaging your own faculties and seeking out non-governmental health insurance as the market allows. we are sorry that you had to curb your plan to buy a bmw 335i and had to settle for the 330 due to the fractional amount taken from your paycheck used to allow a majority of americans and thus the society that sustains your lifestyle, employment, and consumerism the ability to get redress for their health needs, but some things are larger in perspective than your ability to buy a....wait! your per-capita income is well under $250K/year! you drive a camry! you work as the store manager for the best buy in bozeman, montana! obama's gonna give you tax RELIEF! SHUT THE FUCK UP! and i don't even know what the fuck you're on about, after the bush administration curtailed your right to a fair trial, to certain legal protections, and to basic privacy. oh no: liberals want people to have a CHOICE in whether or not they get an abortion! oh no, liberals want to give you a CHOICE to have clean air and water! (if it makes you feel better, 49% of the country can't have an abortion if they wanted it or not. well, tvc might try to give himself one, just for shits and giggles.)

4) bipartisanship gave us the unholy collusion of phil gramm and bill clinton, and look where that got us. when republicans and democrats are bipartisan and AGREE on something, it's probably pure evil.

anyway! that's my quickie write-up. picking out the specious arguments from the credible ones i've made is left as an exercise for the reader, but since the original author probably can't read (for comprehension), no worries! enjoy!

hahaha, awesome post Prole

Shinobi: Your uncle's email is so jam packed with bullshit (all killer no filler) that a sufficient response would require fisking, the worst thing to come from the internets.  Anyway he's probably drowning in cognitive dissonance and well beyond the point of changing his mind.

In light of this I suggest a strategy of short, passive aggressive responses.  Examples:

1)  The economy is really important.  McCain's plan sounds pretty good.  I just hope he'll do better than all the other Republican presidents.

2)  We totally need to fight for democracy!  Nobody's going to stand up for freedom around the world like us!  Can you tell me more about how the "quid-pro-quo" talks led to elections in Libya and North Korea?  I'm arguing with a friend who says that they're dictatorships and we cut deals with them.

3)  You're right about one-party control.  Didn't it feel weird voting for a Democrat in 2002 and 2006 to balance Bush, though?

The only way I see abortion as allowable, and even then I don't because to me life begins when cells begin to multiply, is if the mother's life is threatened. Rape victims I could go with it being the mother's choice too, but I do honestly wonder how many of these aborted babies could hold the cure for diseases and such in their futures had they been allowed to live.

‘Barbies for War!’

Published: September 16, 2008

Carly Fiorina, the woman John McCain sent out to defend Sarah Palin and rip anyone who calls her a tabula rasa on foreign policy and the economy, admitted Tuesday that Palin was not capable of running Hewlett-Packard.

That’s pretty damning coming from Fiorina, who also was not capable of running Hewlett-Packard.

Carly helpfully added that McCain (not to mention Obama and Biden) couldn’t run a major corporation. He couldn’t get his immigration bill passed either, but now he’s promising to eliminate centuries of greed on Wall Street.

The Wall Street Journal reported that McCain was thinking about taking Palin to the U.N. General Assembly next week so she can shake hands with some heads of state. You can’t contract foreign policy experience like a rhinovirus. To paraphrase the sniffly Adelaide in “Guys and Dolls,” a poy-son could develop a cold war.

The latest news from Alaska is that the governor keeps a tanning bed in the Juneau mansion. As The Los Angeles Times pointed out, when Palin declared May 2007 Skin Cancer Awareness Month in Alaska, the press release explained that skin cancer was caused by “the sun and from tanning beds.”

I sautéed myself in Sarahville last week.

I wandered through the Wal-Mart, which seemed almost as large as Wasilla, a town that is a soulless strip mall without sidewalks set beside a soulful mountain and lake.

Wal-Mart has all the doodads that Sarah must need in her career as a sportsman — Remingtons and “torture tested” riflescopes, game bags for caribou, machines that imitate rabbits and young deer and coyotes to draw your quarry in so you can shoot it, and machines to squish cows into beef jerky.

I talked to a Wal-Mart mom, Betty Necas, 39, wearing sweatpants and tattoos on her wrists.

She said she’s never voted, and was a teenage mom “like Bristol.” She likes Sarah because she’s “down home” but said Obama “gives me the creeps. Nothing to do with the fact that he’s black. He just seems snotty, and he looks weaselly.”

Ten Obama supporters in Wasilla braved taunts and drizzle to stand on a corner between McDonald’s and Pizza Hut. They complained that Sarah runs government like a vengeful fiefdom and held up signs. A guy with a bullhorn yelled out of a passing red car: “Go back to the city, you liberal Communists!”

At gatherings in The Last Frontier, pastors pray for reporters, drilling evokes cheers and Todd Palin is hailed as a guy who likes to burn fossil fuels.

I had many “Sarahs,” as her favorite skinny white mocha is now called, at the Mocha Moose. “I’ve seen her at 4 a.m. with no makeup,” said manager Karena Forster, “and she’s just as beautiful.”

I stopped by Sarah’s old Pentecostal church, the Wasilla Assembly of God, and perused some books: “The Bait of Satan,” “Deliverance from PMS,” and “Kissed the Girls and Made them Cry: Why Women Lose When They Give In.” (Author Lisa Bevere advises: “Run to the arms of your prince and enter your dream.”)

In Anchorage Saturday, I went by a conference conducted by James Dobson’s Focus on the Family and supported by Sarah’s current church, the Wasilla Bible Church, about how to help gays and lesbians “journey out” of same-sex attraction.

(As The Times reported recently, in 1995, Palin, then a city councilwoman, told colleagues she had seen “Daddy’s Roommate” on the shelf of the library and did not approve. The Wasilla Assembly of God tried to ban “Pastor, I Am Gay” by Howard Bess, a liberal Christian preacher in nearby Palmer.)

Anne Heche’s mother, Nancy, talked about her distress when her daughter told her she was involved with Ellen. Jeff Johnston told me he had “a struggle” with homosexuality “for a season,” but is now “happily married with three boys.” (Books for sale there included “Mommy, Why Are They Holding Hands?” and “You Don’t Have to Be Gay.”)

I covered a boisterous women against Palin rally in Anchorage, where women toted placards such as “Fess up about troopergate,” “Keep your vows off my body,” “Barbies for war!” “Sarah, please don’t put me on your enemies list,” and “McCain and Palin = McPain.”

A local conservative radio personality, Eddie Burke, who had lambasted the organizers as “a bunch of socialist, baby-killing maggots,” was on hand with a sign reading “Alaska is not Frisco.”

“We are one Supreme Court justice away from overturning Roe v. Wade,” he excitedly told me.

R. D. Levno, a retired school principal, flew in from Fairbanks. “She’s a child, inexperienced and simplistic,” she said of Sarah. “It’s taking us back to junior high school. She’s one of the popular girls, but one of the mean girls. She is seductive, but she is invented.”

Nah.  I wouldn't say Obama's proposal had a big impact on the process, but his plan was much, much closer to the bill that was passed than Hillary's or AFAIK any of the Republican candidate's.

Fantastic...so why didn't he bother to vote for it?
