Yeah, you're just starting.  That's right at the beginning.

And I don't remember this song playing when I entered Mexico but evidently it's supposed to.  Freakin' bugs.  It would've been awesome to listen to this song as you crossed into Mexico for the first time.   All I got was attacked by a never ending swarm of wolves.  Seriously, I collected around 40 or so pelts before I got bored and went to the nearest town.

My game is sabotaging me.

Is it possible that the swarm of wolves was supposed to prevent you from entering Mexico? I've not received my copy so I have NO IDEA WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, but doesn't Rockstar block off the areas you're not supposed to visit? Maybe you were making a run for the border before they wanted you to?

Yeah, I got to hear the song as I rode to Chuparosa(sp?) for the first time. It was totally awesome. I felt like the most badass cowboy ever.

No it was a bug.  You can't arbitrarily cross into Mexico since the Rio Grande River (or whatever the game calls it) seperates the two and the bridges are all out, in typical GTA fashion.  The wolf swarm was just a bizarre glitch.  I didn't mind at the time to be honest because I was looking to kill 5 wolves with my knife anyway and wolf pelts/hearts/meat are worth good money so I figured why not, but now knowing I missed out on experiencing that song playing the first time I rode across Mexico is a little disappointing because that would've been completely amazing.  The Mexican landscape and the story up to that point set to that particular piece of music.....man, that'd be brilliant.

And I finished the game now.  Not really what I was expecting to be honest.

]The game basically reached its climax during the battle for Dutch and then after that you're subjected to about 7 or 8 bullshit homestead missions that felt like the tutorial all over again. I understand Rockstar wanted you to connect with your family but honestly I thought they were all a bunch of douchebags, and Marston himself wasn't all that much better when dealing with his "uncle". Having this character development take place around the most mundane zoloft popping missions in the game reminded me in a way of the end of Shenmue 2 where the actual game was over after the tower fight and then you had a 3 hour walk in the woods in China where not much of anything actually happened (of course not much of anything EVER happened in Shenmue, but that's another story).

And then after it's all done, you're left playig as Martson's distinguished mentally-challenged looking son.  I don't want to play anything with this dick.  I want John back.

I felt the same way.  Man, that kid grew up fugly.  Although I took the opportunity to play him as a grudge-holding Billy the Kid type  psychotic and went around killing everyone I saw until I got tired of it.  There's nothing for him to do.

The first time I played through the end I had left a couple of side missions half-finished, and I thought they could have done a better job of adjusting to the three year difference in time.  The same fucking people were still standing there after three years!  :lol  It also would have been nice to have given the kid a handful of missions where he met people who talked about his father and did things for/with them, leading up to the revenge shootout, instead of just leading you straight to Ross.  Or some things to do afterward, sort of a "Kid has to make his own name" type stuff.

Also, everyone keeps saying Landon Ricketts is a Sam Elliottt character.  He's not.  He's a Lee Van Cleef homage.  They even hired a voice actor that sounds just like him.

I gotta imagine that we'll be getting some sort of "revenge" DLC where the son tracks down the government agents that killed his dad....seems obvious.....but I don't think I can handle playing it as this character without getting some sort of plastic surgery and a voice-ectomy.  Seriously, he looks like the male version of this -

:greenshinobi

And speaking of the ending and all, it just dawned on me that the mysterious grim-reaper type character from the "I Know You" missions disappeared at the very place where John and Abigail were burried.  That's actually a nice touch.

:lol rode with 3 others tonight, was at pike's basin. 2 douchebags decided itd be fun to fuck with us. bad mistake. They got their asses sniped/chased and they kept respawning at the same spot. Eventually they cried out for help on the game chat, and pretty soon 8 or 9 people were in their posse heading over to pike's basin. Unfortunately for them, they were at an average of level 7 or 8, while our lowest dude was level 15. needless to say fast horses+casual aiming+mouser pistol = total ownage. This continued for about 20 or so minutes until 6 or 7 of them realized the fruitlessness of their endeavor and quit.

This game rules.

i think fucking with people is part of the experience. don't want to be interrupted? go private free roam.

we also went around the map tonight in the 6 person carriage doing drive-bys. Took that thing all the way to Mexico and back. That was real fun.

Multiplayer needs:

- Bounties like in sSP, where you can bring the target in alive with the gang chasing you
- The ability to challenge other players to a one-on-one duel
- Horse racing, and you can use your weapons to "cheat"
- Siege, where you and your posse can hole up as outlaws in any of the gang hideouts and take on waves of lawmen (hardcore mode - if you die, you can't respawn into your posse until the next wave starts)
- Poker, Blackjack, and Liar's Dice MP tables
- Random events like in SP (stop a villain from killing a whore, escort and protect a lady from bandits, etc)

They need to concentrate on making Free Roam a better experience, because that's where everyone's hanging out - no one's really playing any of the standard MP matches.

Hahaha, thanks, but it's really just me wanting some more of the SP stuff transferred over, Free Roam is pretty empty unless you're in a posse hunting down other posses - and that's gonna get old pretty quick.  I just think their time is going to be wasted creating more team vs. team match types, since literally no one (at least in the servers I've been on) is playing the ones that are already there.

So are the side games like poker and dice and stuff actually fun?

One of my biggest problems with GTA IV is that the pool, darts, bowling, and Qub3d are just pathetically un-fun.

Multiplayer needs a "war" mode. 8 vs 8, capture as many towns as you can. Once you conquer a town, the town spawns NPCs friendly to you. Other team have to eliminate all those NPCs before they can officially "conquer" a town. Turn off radar for people not on your team.

Another mode is Zombie mode. Free roam, have one player who does not show up on radar as the "zombie." Other players have to find him before he finds them. Imagine thinking some random dude walking down the street is an NPC- then next thing you know he's got his pump action in your face. Give him the ability to steal the face, clothes etc of NPCs so he's constantly changing what he looks like. Once you eliminate the zombie, you become the zombie yourself.

Ugh, Rockstar please give me these two modes. Free roam is so empty, but it's still the best thing to happen to multiplayer gaming in a long time =(

DF 360 vs PS3

Quote
We also see that the view distance on PS3 has been pulled back (or rather forward), although it's more accurate to say that view detail  has been reduced. Xbox 360 gives you more detail further away, not just in terms of raw resolution but with actual object placement too.

Quote
So, we're just left with the matter of the final recommendation. We've demonstrated conclusively that the Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption possesses higher resolution, improved levels of detail, noticeably superior performance in-game and fewer jaggies owing to a more consistently applied anti-aliasing solution that doesn't blur the image. Shadows are generally sharper, and of better quality (particularly on the characters' self-shadows).

Just about the only area where PS3 commands an advantage is in terms of loading: the 515MB mandatory install shaves off a few seconds, but as the only in-game loading occurs during fast-travel between locations (using the campsite), it's hardly worth mentioning. Certainly the install doesn't grant any kind of tangible performance boost in terms of less LOD-popping or anything like that.

it really depends on whether you like those kind of games in real life, they're pretty straightforward/simple

it's only required of you a couple of times during the missions

it's you and some npcs sitting around a table saying random things to each other as you make your bets, call bluffs, etc

I loved RDR too, now I just wish someone will make another GUN. Maybe people would be more willing to give a GUN sequel a go since RDR has seemingly made the western genre relevant.

I'd love another GUN.

They need to concentrate on making Free Roam a better experience, because that's where everyone's hanging out - no one's really playing any of the standard MP matches.
I gave multiplayer a good go last night, and one of the dumbest things about the standard multiplayer is it gives you jack all XP compared to Free roam. You get a 100XP bonus for winning capture the bag, + 50XP per kill in deathmatch. Compared to 1000-2000xp for a quick 3 minute gang hideout in free roam. Its striaght up distinguished mentally-challenged. Apparently the standard MP consecutive wins cheevs are easy as pie to boost, so I'll get those soon. Only cheev Im actually worried about is Posse up, but Im fairly confident I can 1000 this game without too much trouble. Like Eel said, Im just hoping they focus on free roam and add more features via DLC.

I got the "Have gun, will travel" cheev. Achievement fans are saying its a rough cheev, but I just cruised around by myself, and did all the hideouts. Half of them I enetered the hideout at the last minute while other dudes were finishing up, and it counted as me completing the hideout  :D

probs about little over halfway i'm guessing.

so far, Marston is the best main character in a Rockstar game. First time I've felt that their main character actions in the main storyline missions match up with how they're portraying him as a person. I appreciate the matter-of-fact-ness he has about his situation and his sense of morals.

multiplayer is really fun, but I need to get out my headset next time I play.  Even through my TV speakers I could barely hear Eel (I checked if there was an audio option to turn up XBL voices and there wasn't) and I think I barely made out to shoot my gun into the air as if to say "ok/yes".  If I heard wrong, it would seem I have a vendetta against the sky.

having everything so quick to the action makes me not worry about the karma standing or dying.  It's fun to take out people only using a knife Ninja Western style.

Ah, I'll save that for later.

Final thoughts: My favorite Rockstar game, by far. Some really great writing (for a video game). I was surprised by some of the subtlety, considering the medium. It has flaws, there are certainly bugs, but I feel this style of gameplay suits the Wild West setting better than it does a metropolitan city. This also marks the first Rockstar game I was able to finished from start to end.

I'm down for DLC or GTA4-style episodes.

My multi complaints pretty much mirror what Eel and Scene have already stated, but I'll add that the lack of creating your own gang is disappointing too.  I get that posses are supposed to be the quick and easy way for people to hook up and get shit done, but why didn't Rockstar add in permanent gangs that friends could create?  Something like an MMO guild structure where you get a higher multiplier on bonus XP when running with your own gang (or larger/smaller groups of your own gang), weapons that have nice perks but only allowed when running with the gang, and leaderboard bounties where other gangs or solo players can collect mucho bucks when they run into your wanted gang during Free Roam.

Right now, the only incentive to playing multi is for achievements, and personally that's not enough for me to get into it; I'd rather finish off the story and just wait for the co-op DLC.  Including some of this stuff in future DLCs or episodes or whatever would be great, and I'm not trying to be all "wawawewa r*sux cuz it isnt perfekt out the box" since I'm really enjoying what's already there in the game.  In fact, I would be more happy if they pushed co-op back even longer to fix the fucking bug where the goddamn hideout gang leaders spawn or fall into the fucking ground. >:(
