Fuck China. Burn that whole fucking place down.

My cousin works there and when he described the "stinky tofu" that was enough for me.

stinky tofu is great.

In light of this week's market trends can we have a companion thread for Great & Depressing: Wuhan Drift?
The type that is fermented in human shit? Cause that's what he was shown.

In 2012, for example, Sina News ran an article with the confession of a stinky tofu maker:

“Every time nature calls, I put my excrement in plastic buckets instead of the toilet—it’s like treasure. After adding water, I put the tofu in it for two or three days. This tofu smells like nothing else. If I don’t do it this way, it’ll take too long for the tofu to ferment naturally—how am I going to make money that way? But all the same, lots of people likes the stinky tofu I made, saying it’s plenty stinky and has a strong taste. It’s definitely weird.”

the uae tour has been canceled mid race, which is a uci pro tour. rumor is one of the staff members for a team tested positive for the virus and now all riders and staff will be monitored and tested. endurance athletes -- and all athletes for that matter -- have exercise-induced immunodepression which makes them highly susceptible to getting sick, especially cyclists in the midst of a multi-stage race.

and now rumor has is that the milan san remo and strade bianchi are canceled, my precious classics/monuments :shaking

this doesn't bode well for the nba :'(

The NBA starting an international incident by being pro Hong Kong was intentional in order to avoid a multi Chinese city trip.   :doge

My work has banned employees from trips to Italy, Japan and China for the time being. Also the people who were going to go to GDC on my team are not going anymore.

My brother teaches English in Japan, yesterday I asked him if he was worried but he said everything was semi normal. Then a few hours later they cancelled a monthly meeting and a few hours after that they cancelled school for the remainder of the semester.

Of course he has to go in still.

Good article on the fuckery going on in S. Korea atm

https://foreignpolicy.com/2020/02/27/coronavirus-south-korea-cults-conservatives-china/

Quote
For the first four weeks of the outbreak, South Korea marshaled high-tech resources to respond aggressively while promoting transparency. The government tracked the movements of travelers arriving from China, for example by tracking the use of credit cards, checking CCTV footage, or mandating they download an app to report their health status every day. For those infected, the government published an extremely detailed list of their whereabouts, down to which seat they sat in at a movie theater.

...

That all came to a crashing halt last week thanks to the 31st case. Patient No. 31, discovered on Feb. 18, was a member of a quasi-Christian cult called Shincheonji, one of the many new religious movements in the country. Founded in 1984, Shincheonji (whose official name is Shincheonji, Church of Jesus, the Temple of the Tabernacle of the Testimony) means “new heaven and earth,” a reference to the Book of Revelation. Its founder Lee Man-hee claims to be the second coming of Jesus who is to establish the “new spiritual Israel” at the end of days. The cult is estimated to have approximately 240,000 followers, and claims to have outposts in 29 countries in addition to South Korea.

tl;dr Government was doing a pretty good job till literal cultists fucked it all up, conservatives are blaming it all on... China?

  :era

My area isn't too affected with only 13 confirmed cases, but people are definitely frightened. Masks everywhere, less pedestrians, less traffic etc.

Heard that all Japanese schools have shut down and canceled classes through April now.

Over here, starting to see some of the first signs of panic setting in- we went to the supermarket last night and my wife wanted to buy some hand sanitizer.   They were cleaned out.  No masks either.  Checked Amazon and that stuff is being sold by third party sellers for like $100 now.

they cancelled school for the remainder of the semester.

Of course he has to go in still.

Ah, memories of summer vacations as an ASL.   :lol  I would just "go for lunch," then go home or to stores or whatever and come back in time for the day to end.

Sanitizer as well, but even normal cleaning stuff. Tinned food nearly sold out.

Got an e-mail from my university stating that one of the employes is being checked for the virus and that they might close it.

The masks are mostly useless for people not infected.   Quite the grift though.

Respirators that filter that level of particulate (ie: N95/international equivalents) and form a proper seal are more ideal but good luck a) getting people to wear them for appearance reasons and b) finding them in stock after preppers have bought them all :doge

Quote from: CDC
There are important differences between facemasks and respirators. Facemasks do not seal tightly to the face and are used to block large droplets from coming into contact with the wearer’s mouth or nose. Most respirators (e.g. N95) are designed to seal tightly to the wearer’s face and filter out very small particles that can be breathed in by the user.

Quote from: 2012 lab study
A US-Chinese team of researchers created a simulated examination room with mechanized mannequins spaced 6 feet apart to represent coughing and breathing humans. They found that flu viruses floated between the two and were "inhaled" by the breathing mannequin, but that an N95 respirator sealed to the mannequin's face stopped 99.8% of them.

A poorly fitted respirator or a loose-fitting surgical mask, by contrast, blocked only about two thirds of the virus particles.

https://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/5wpr-survey-reveals-38-of-beer-drinking-americans-wouldnt-buy-corona-now-301012225.html
Quote
5WPR's survey found that:

38% of beer-drinking Americans would not buy Corona under any circumstances now

Among those who said they usually drink Corona, only 4% said they would stop drinking Corona, but 14% said they wouldn't order Corona in a public venue

16% of beer drinking Americans were confused about whether Corona beer is related to the coronavirus

"There is no question that Corona beer is suffering because of the coronavirus. Could one imagine walking into a bar and saying "Hey, can I have a Corona?" or "Pass me A Corona," said Ronn Torossian, Founder and CEO of 5WPR. "While the brand has claimed that consumers understand there's no linkage between the virus and the beer company, this is a disaster for the Corona brand. After all, what brand wants to be linked to a virus which is killing people worldwide?"

YouGov's buzz score reported that Corona beer's buzz score — a net score based on whether U.S. adults have heard anything negative or positive about the brand — decreased among those who have an opinion of the brand, from a high score of 75 at the beginning of January to 51 as of late February, 2020.

I’m expecting my work trips to be postponed but I bet airline travel will be real cheap lol

Amazon just announced employees are being told to cancel all “non essential” travel.

I was going for a Roger Ebert film thing. It's something Ebert started doing in Colorado every year and they still do it. So I was saving for a trip to go. I hope they don't cancel. If they do I might still go for the weed.
