Wow, I didn't even hear about this game, but apparently it hurt some people.

That second pic in the first tweet, Austin sounds like a Disco Elysium character in it, no joke.

Wow, I didn't even hear about this game, but apparently it hurt some people.

He's right that above-average writing in games is elevated by critics because the bar for it is generally low, and that having a lot of big words doesn't mean something is well written.

But having done as deep a dive into the game as I could do without playing it, I would consider the writing very good, perhaps even excellent, regardless of the medium. But I'm not super well-read, admittedly.

The writing is very good and it’s great a lot of the time. It’s almost always very funny. It’s not without problems but it’s hard to talk about specifics without getting spoilery. But yes, mostly excellent for gaming.

and of course, the obligatory stinkles post:

Quote
I haven't seen the film so I'm not sure how it's handled or what the other representation is like - and I'm well aware of negative portrayals of mental illness - but isn't there an argument for realistic treatment of a mentally ill character as an antagonist, sympathetic or otherwise? That is one likely outcome of better representation in the future -but it would obviously need a context of fairer representation to contextualize it.

It's also difficult to think about without good examples but drama and fiction tend to exaggerate characteristics - good and bad - to create messages and story that are compelling and can be understood quickly.

In the past that's led to racist, sexist, homophobic and other caricatures - and continues to - even as effort is made to move beyond those tropes and archetypes - but we're miles away from that being a thing of the past.

But there may come a time when mental illness can be a part of a character without it defining them - an aspect of daily life that is well understood and controlled and meaningful without being the entire point.

Clumsy efforts are made with autistic and spectrum characters but typically their condition gives them either superpowers or crippling social barriers.

That's an improvement versus simply ignoring it but also a necessary stage in discussing these things in drama.

I was really enjoying BOTW until the first DLC came out with the Trial of the Sword. Once it came out I needed to put aside everything else in the game aside to finish the DLC and get the super powered Master Sword.  However I'm not good enough at the game and haven't been able to finish the third trial and get the fully upgraded sword. No matter how much I try I fail pretty early on in the third trial. I cannot find it within myself to keep going and actually play the rest of the game because I feel like I am missing out. This is a huge bummer for me. I had even spent probably 300-400 dollars buying all the Zelda Amiibo at inflated prices due to them being out of print because I didn't want to miss any items. Anyone else ever had something like this happen to them?

I gotta say, it leaves me uneasy to see mods coming in here and announcing their devotion to trans rights while simultaneously letting this stuff happen.

You can say "it's not in my control" and "there's more to it".... but is there? And control? You have control. You could grow a backbone and stand against this shit.

It's not like the GAF mods peaced out after the shower incident. Oh wait, they did...
Quote from: Fantomas, post: 26574700, member: 4193
The fact that none of the admins want to talk to the community openly about this is just such bullshit. Ket makes a post saying that staff have made transphobic/aphobic comments while being allowed to remain part of the team even when the same comments would earn anyone else a ban on this site. The admins' response? Ban her for knowing this and then not comment on any of the accusations at all. And we're supposed to be cool with that decision and not want to have an open dialogue about it? Take it to PMs where we will be assured our voices are being heard and that they will run off to their discord chat to talk about it, before coming back with a very finely crafted staff post full of only the best corporate PR language that is meant to speak for all of them? No thanks, talk to us openly how about, this is some major bullshit from where we're sitting.
Quote from: Papa Satanás, post: 26574842, member: 2475
If Ket did something that breached privacy, fine, but show your work. I'm afraid I don't take the word of volunteers chirping "use that report button!" very seriously.

Quite honestly, this is some Gaf-level rug sweeping. It's just painted pretty because some mods are trans.
Quote from: Nora, post: 26576591, member: 203
For real, these guidelines are the most insulting shit. They waste more words on how mods get their feelings hurt when you say that they don't care (which I caught a week ban for before it got overturned when the thread got swarmed by people going "wtf happened in here", due to me and another trans member getting banner and a transphobe getting nothing initially) than on actual policy concerning discussion.

"Claiming that our staff don’t care, or attacking us for doing our jobs, is personally hurtful and makes us less likely to want to donate our time. In the interest of protecting the mental well-being of our volunteers, such posts will receive bans as steep as necessary until they stop. "

This is literally straight up "Beatings will continue until morale improves" type shit lmao. Clownshoes. Maybe such posts will stop when policy and action improves. Consistently.

Unban Ketkat.

And more juiciness in the trans week thread :mouf

It all started when we were having discussions about Terry when he was announced , and they always went a little something like this:

Me: You seen Terry from KOF is in Smash?
Him: Yeah...who is he, no one's heard of him
Me: He is kinda not mainstream but there's still plenty of people out there who know and love stuff by SNK
Him: I thought he was SEGA
Me: No
Him: Well whatever what a waste of a slot
Me: Oh

He's been really apathetic about the whole situation, not caring about Terry or all the SNK stuff and why I'm super excited (I'm not really a gamer, but I love my fighting games) because he just doesn't get it. He always likes to go on about relevancy but when I mentioned that Joker nor Cloud weren't that relevant by his logic (2 characters he loves) he got super defensive.

Now I've never stooped so low to say that Smash Bros isn't a fighting game (I don't care for the whole argument) but he's been sending me stuff over Facebook regarding fighting games. I told him once that Tekken 3 was the highest selling fighting game at one point, but then he sent me screenshots showing Smash Bros Ultimate is now the highest selling fighter(which is true) and then started going on about how Tekken was stupid and weird because it has characters like a kangaroo boxer. He also likes to proclaim that Street Fighter II is the best fighting game of all time because he saw an article about how Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection was the best fighting game to play at the moment, which he reasoned that "it was because of all the versions of Street Fighter II". He played II on the GBA when he was a kid like I also did when I was younger but we're both 20 so it's not like we were both part of that massive cultural boom when it came out.

CFA's terrible charitable donations notwithstanding,  they're very enjoyable places to visit. Friendly staff, mega clean, and so on. Every other fast food joint feels like ghetto trash in comparison.

I stick to fast-casual mostly, but if I get fast food, CFA is my first choice.

Instead of focusing on mods (for whom this situation is beyond their control) all of us in marginalized groups should be asking questions about the makeup of the admin staff/mod captains, the ones who actually make the final decisions. Of the seven listed, six are male. I don't know any of them but there's probably some concerning optics regarding diversity of sexual orientation and gender identity among them too. There is likely a lack of diversity among the top administration and that's where the problems are stemming from.

Wow, now I feel less safe here. That's not something I expected on trans awareness week but I'm not surprised. Thanks for catching me up folks.

When did BDS suddenly develop a history of histories? Too bad about being banned for being an uppity cheeseburger (I actually wrote cheeseburger without thinking).

Put trans folx in positions of power on Era and you'd see majority of threads turn into graveyards overnight

Can we start banning Era posters here? I don't want any of that anti-trans stuff leaking in here.

It's hilarious that the stickied trans thread is now about shitting on the mods and they keep whining about how they don't feel protected  :lol
