The industry managed to rack up $791.1 million in total sales for new hardware and software at retail in October, according to data-tracking firm The NPD Group’s latest report. That’s up 5 percent from 2012, when the industry generated $755.7 million in revenue. That doesn’t match the monster $1.08-billion September total, but that wasn’t expected.

Again, software sales made up for slipping hardware numbers. New game sales were up 12 percent to $482.5 million. That’s compared to $432.6 million in 2012. Consoles only produced $171.7 million, which is down 8 percent from $187.4 million in the same period last year.

Let's be honest though: X's cover legendary looks cooler than Y's.  I think that's all that matters to the little kids that ask for copies of Pokemon.

I'm honestly shocked at Ass Creed's charting. I knew 3 had a lot of backlash, but I figured 4 would weather that storm. Seems not. To be honest, there isn't too many attractive titles for me on the system now a days. Since DOA5U released there's... Injustice, which I have no interest in. Tearaway which I want to get but not day 1 and hope Media Molecule isn't relegated to handhelds only after LittleBigPlanet 1-2. And Killzone which... uh... yeah.

I haven't can't think of any "noteworthy" titles in the past year besides those? I guess... Disgaea 4 being ported but I honestly want Disgaea 1-2 over that at this point and I still haven't finished Disgaea 3.

Though, I guess late ports of Flower, Journey, Dead Nation, Walking Dead, et. al. counts as "support"/noteworthy titles, yeah?

Madden/CoD/etc? Hmm, seems possible at this point. It took forever for Ghosts to be confirmed for the WiiU, you could tell Activision was thinking about skipping it. Ghost selling <30,000 in a year should do the trick.

Madden 25 didn't come out on the Wii U.  I don't imagine it costs a whole lot to port over to the Wii U but when a port comprises of 1-2 percent of the game's overall sales, it would be pretty easy to say it isn't worth it and move on from the platform entirely, especially in 2014 when there will be fewer cross gen efforts.

Destiny and Titanfall are big titles that are coming to both gens largely to maximize profits; the PS4 and XB1 won't have install bases large enough to make either game a success so early in 2014. Likewise I think the Maddens and CoDs will continue to appear on the 360 and PS3 at least through 2014, maybe into 2015. I don't remember how long EA supported the PS2/Xbox but iirc they had ports on them for at least a couple years.

The difference will be that confused parents and gamers waiting for proper next-gen titles before jumping in will continue to buy 360/PS3 titles. No such market exists for the WiiU. Those people don't give a shit about Madden and there's nothing EA can do about it. I thought the Wii could lead to some interesting innovations, and while EA did use the controller it never caught on with audiences. Likewise the WiiU has obvious appliances to Madden (create your own routes and plays with the game pad), but they'll never be appreciated by an audience that only plays Nintendo games.

You're right that cross gen will continue to exist but over time, more and more developers are going to move on, and the Wii U is going to be left behind.

I have no doubt that Nintendo knows how fucked they are, but I suspect that they think 3D World and Mario Kart 8 will pull them out.  If not, they really don't have any more options because in the past, their solution to a slump was pushing out more Mario games.
