Lol ROTR prob needs to sell a few million to break even

The previous Tomb Raider sold something like 3-4 million and S-E was still disappointed by those numbers.

S-E can eat a bag of dicks. That year they were fond of blaming anything developed by their non-Japanese development houses, and waltzed right past their troubled Japanese studios, humming and looking away.

Feb NPD:

Hardware down 23% YOY
PS4 number 1 and up YOY

That's pretty impressive

PS4 = 405k or 406k !

XB1 = 248k or 249k

Close to getting outsold 2:1 in their best territory, gloomy gloomy for xbox.

RIP The traditional console model :lawd

I will be shocked if NX didn't embrace PC in some form at this point to get a leap on Sony as they are stuck trying to push a locked hardware/ecosystem while everyone else is free to try take "Free form factors".

:lol if you think Nintendo will do that

Traditional consoles will be around for a long time, at least Playstation will. No one is going to abandon a market where tens of millions of people purchase full priced AAA games every year. You are insane if you think so.

Xbox is really done I think, unless MS has a change of heart and pulls a rabit out of their hat for next gen.

PC will be PC, and I can see a large section of the hardcore remaining there.

They paid for some of it's development or promotion, but probably not a sizable amount in general.

MKX was a top 5 best selling game last year, 2D fighters are doing well enough. Fighting games in general sales wise are just as big as they were, except for Street Fighter.

Some of it, like Morma said.

As for fighting games, they've generally always been niche. But SF5 collapsed hard due to it's bad launch state. It remains to be seen if it'll recover post-June, but I extremely doubt it. Every other fighter floats by pretty successfully with their niches.

They didn't say the ratio but KI is essentially just a demo with one character in "F2P" mode. I'd imagine the conversion rate for purchases is high since you need to buy something to get any sort of experience in the game. The six million number was for unique log ins in March. So probably a fair chunk of people made a purchase. Probably related to Season 3.

Long article on Minecraft, with the mention that it's still selling 10,000 a day.

Seems like it's just starting to catch fire over here in Japan. At least, where we are in the suburbs of Kansai, it is only now beginning to become crazy popular. Most kids are playing it on smartphone or tablet, though the PS4 version is likely popular too. My son has had friends over every day to play four-player local splitscreen games. It is mayhem.

They are already a decade behind Microsoft with having digital purchases tied to accounts. At some point they should be able to catch up. IIRC, they first tried it with the 3DS launch.

There is no trying to catch up, the recipe is there, just implement it. Or hire someone that knows how to do it. They don't have to reinvent the wheel almost every company has some normal account system.

I can login to Steam from my toothbrush and make purchases, that I can access on my laptop or wherever. It's not rocket science.

Console sales figures are apparently "very disappointing" according to rumbles on twitter and no company is putting out PR. So that PS4 Neo leak probably just totalled all three of them till the end of the year because no one is going to buy a new console. It's going to get hilarious.

And congratulations to Activision Blizzard for winning May NPD with the highly successful Overwatch.

This gen is going to flat line completely for hardware sales soon, except on months of behemoths like GTA and Elder Scrolls. Last gen had so many gimmicks or surprises that casual players could fuck around with.

Last gen had:

CoD
Guitar Hero/Rockband
Wii
Kinect
Minecraft

A person buys a console to play Rock Band or Call of Duty, now they would have access to other mega popular things. Last gen had a ton of different waves of things being popular for a couple or few years.

This gen, Call of Duty sells well but sales for each game are inconsistent as fuck and they haven't hit a previous peak reached before. Nintendo is dead. Rock Band and Guitar Hero sequels flopped. Motion controls are dead. Minecraft is the biggest outlier.

Nothing new has been introduced this gen to gain casual attention, nadda. There is no new wave. Console sales this gen have been driven by bundles and "good will" so to speak, buying a console now for a few games and building up a big library over time.

Software in general will either sell well or well enough, but this gen for Sony and Microsoft will not reach the hardware numbers of last gen, not even close.
OH!

With Microsoft? Probably. I don't see Microsoft bankrolling further Remedy titles. As a studio? Hardly, AFAIK. Steam's launch of Alan Wake helped them out. Really, though: MS's mandates for them is what is fucking Remedy over more than anything. I doubt a non-UWA/UWP of Quantum Break for PC would be as shit-show-y as the UWA release.

A Win 32 release of QB on steam would have likely have been just as much a shitshow because the game is an absolute monster spec wise. Especially now Remedy put in options to uncap things like the temporal resolution. Only a Fury X or GTX 1080 can run it at 1080P 60FPS native with no upscaling and a fury X will run it better because it's one of the few titles using Async compute fully for the lighting engine. It's an insane looking game effects wise and Remedy is clearly showing off in spots (That bit in Chapter 2 where the weather freaks out in the alleyway is amazing)

The expectations of the PC base were they were just going to to smoke on rigs it just because it's "only 720P" on xbone followed by reality that "Oh wait Remedy made a game with full global illumation, real time lighting and forced MSAAx4 that murders specs" and it's a miracle of the universe it even runs on xbone. It likely would have been "Only 720P" on PS4 as well because the amount of tech the game is pushing is obscene and some of the options really are just "Next gen of PC hardware only". And it was outright neglegent Microsoft and Remedy didn't come out and say it before launch that even your top of the range PC is going to have trouble with it and it was the next gen hardware pusher (It worked for Crytek y'know). UWP got the blame for it despite the problems being relatively minor with UWP and not people admitting Remedy made a game that has a lighting system a generation ahead of what everyone else is using that kills rigs.

I remember seeing an interview with Remedy saying they came in well under budget for a game with less budget than a normal AAA game and the TV show was far cheaper than expected so, they probably did get away with it. But what a shitshow not warning people before launch. Especially since they could have marketed it as the new "So you say you are PC master race? Prove it" title if they didn't fuck up so hard on launch.

This always happens with some PC game though so it's expected unless you started PC gaming post 2012 or something when it became the thing to do on GAF.

I think Alan Wake had similar issues right? I remember that game was tough to run too compared to other games around that time.

Alan Wake used the same sampling tech on 360 that influenced QB where the game ran at 540P using multisampled 720P images (Or some wizardry like that) and upscaled out so it looked cleaner than other sub-720 games on the 360 like COD 4. It was one of the first real intensive resource games on PC for a while. The marketing of PC gaming has changed from bragging about specs and how each new game was going to be an amazing tech powerhouse that shows off a great rig and new cards to keeping quiet and hoping no one notices, even if the game is well optimized. Even NVIDIA and AMD just pushes the on board features like Gameworks but don't start talking about how it will look incredible with the new 1080 GTX like they used to do. But it's mainly down to the steam effect of publishers hoping people just buy the on sale version to fill their library and wanting to keep the "PC Master Race" complacent. If you tell your consumers that your 970/i5 is not good enough these days. They will just tell you fuck off and not buy your game instead of rushing to buy upgrades or dealing with some reduced settings till the next gen of cards comes along like they used to.

It's the downside to the PC Gaming Renaissance in that companies can't make games with future technology or be barraged with angry people demanding why it doesn't run at ultra settings on their "glorious" rigs any more.

This new class of PC fanboys came into it with the expectation set by shit consoles. The #1 greatest strength of PC gaming has always been scalability, but the PC masterrace shitters don't realize that running every console port at twice the framerate on a medium rig from 2 years ago just because it's a console port is not normal.

soooo... is remedy finished?  :(

I don't doubt a Win32 port would've been bad, but as bad as the UWA with no modding or attempt to fix until a patch came out? :doge :gurl
