Title: The Mummy Demastered - 16-Bit Style Metroidvania
Post by: bork on October 11, 2017, 08:07:13 AM
While the recent Tom Cruise movie was a big ol' flop, one good thing has come from it- Wayforward's The Mummy Demastered!  This is a Metroidvania-style game and a pseudo-sequel to their Aliens DS game (which I have yet to play).

Gives pretty big Castlevania vibes!

Coming out 10/24 on PS4, Switch, Xboner, and PC.  Looks great!

The Alien DS game is great. This looks pretty cool, curious how much of a Metroidvania it actually is tho.

Could this finally be the Dark Souls of modern day 16-bit Metroidvanias?

Only Wayforward game I can think of that I actually enjoyed playing was Contra 4. They're really good at spritework and their games usually look great, but tend to be boring.

Their new Shantae game is really good.

And they went for set levels instead of going for a Metroidvania-style feel, which I think helped in its case.  Still has a bit of that 'Vania feel with being able to replay stages and access new areas in them with new abilities, but I guess that's more like something in Mega Man than Castlevania.

From the preview video it's vibe genuinely looks like a mix of CV and M so it might wind up being genuinely deserving of the hybrid subgenre title. If they actually pull off a mixture of gothic and sci fi this could be really cool.

Because most of their best talent left a long time ago.

He is not an esteemed Uber-enthusiast of imported animated features, and so he has a hard time discerning the difference between 30-year-olds who look 15, hundred-year-olds who look 20, and thousand year old  demons who look 25. You’ll have to cut him some slack.

I kind of like the 'Demastered' title though. It's a pretty nice jab to remasters.

Also holy shit bluemax, missed you in CFB man *cheers*

It’s $19.99. I was hoping for a little cheaper. I may wait for a sale. I did really enjoy Aliens Infestation on the DS so I may buy it at full price depending on the length

I agree. Especially launching in the fall when blockbuster games are coming out. It would have been better to release it early summer.

I think most of Wayforwards digital games have launched at $20 like the Shantae series. I can’t get by the cutesy art style to give that series a try though

It's out and is a pretty good little 'Vania game.  The story is stupid, but doesn't really matter.  Plays very much like a Metroid-esque game where you can shoot in multi-directions and roll, plus gain new weapons (and I assume abilities) that allow you to access areas you couldn't get into or reach previously.  Good soundtrack too.  I wonder how long it will be, but for twenty bucks I can't find much to complain about, other than some framerate issues (Switch version) here and there.

Picked this up on Switch. So far finding it pretty ok. But the performance on Switch is weirdly bad? Stuttering a lot.

Stuttering? Ew. Damn, and I had been planning to get this. I mean, once a slot opens up.

Let's hope for a patch. I like wayforward. Their games do not always manage to hold my interest for long, but somehow I just like their look-and-feel. And sound.

Contra 4 is legit, but after that I also felt they were kind of style over substance. Tried 2 Shantae games, whose novelty factor wore off after like an hour max.

Their latest Shantae game [1/2 Genie Hero] is legitimately good.
