The public transport (in Paris) and national railways strike against pension reform in France is now longer than the 1995 one.

They've done it with universities already. I'm not shocked one bit.

Nissan’s former CEO Carlos Ghosn, out on strict bail and due to be tried next year in Japan for alleged financial crimes, has apparently fled the country for his family's native Lebanon, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The auto executive has been arrested, released, and re-arrested multiple times since he was originally detained in November 2018 over allegations of financial wrongdoing during his time as Chairman and CEO of the Nissan-Renault-Mitsubishi Alliance. He was later confined to house arrest, which gave way to a strict form of bail later this year where Ghosn could only leave his apartment while being tailed by three separate police agencies, according to the Financial Times.

To be fair, Japanese legal system appear really strict and borderline Kafkaian. Not to commiserate too much though there's obviously some Byzantine corporate politics (and just straight politics) between Renault and Nissan involved in the sudden outburst of revelations, I don't really doubt he dipped his fingers with some gluttony considering what's been made public. It's not even surprising within the hagiography built around him, abuse of power is the other side of the coin of that narrative of the cosmopolitan outsider who rose to the top on his personal genius who tamed the insular and inflexible Japanese protectionism, a modern day corporate daimyo.

Fleeing to Lebanon is pretty desperate. Maybe that's a way to force official French diplomacy to be a little more forthcoming, there will have to be talks on how to resolve this. But the French state has always been very cautious with the whole thing, certainly doesn't want to give the appearance of meddling into a business matter (it's been a longstanding problem for the Japanese, given how intertwined Renault and the state are... Not that Nissan is exactly virginal in that domain but heh)... And besides it's a little hard to cast aspersions on the Japanese justice legitimacy to investigate those serious accusations.

That will make a good movie, I have no doubt one will be made.

The usual presidential address for the new year by Macron haven't really done anything to advance the issue of the confrontation over his pension reform package. He said he intended to "carry it to term". So basically the strike will continue as long as the strikers can hold.

I gave a few euros to a marauding union group collecting funds but maybe I'll see if I can make a better contribution to the support fund. It's kind of a pain to have little to no public transport but heh what can you do.

Guys... I don't know if you're paying attention to iraq coverage right now but it's quite something. All the tropes are here: le Drumpf made mistakes and these guys would normally have been on Our Side , totalitarian mind control from iran and it's hordes of teleporting militias.. very powerful stuff...

The Trump Administration might've droned the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Qassem Soleimani at Baghad airport.
Who happens to be the top commander of Iran and seen as the most second powerful figure of the regime next to the supreme leader.
Which would be comparable to droning Pompeo at Heathrow.  :doge

Iraqi news now also reporting the same thing

Tomorrow half the Iraqi army will be in front of the US embassy if this keeps up (and not to defend it).
They better start installing some SAM sites at the Mar-A-Lago.

Quote
Congress and the President authorize a draft: The president claims a crisis has occurred which requires more troops than the volunteer military can supply. Congress passes and the President signs legislation which revises the Military Selective Service Act to initiate a draft for military manpower.
The Lottery: A lottery based on birthdays determines the order in which registered men are called up by Selective Service. The first to be called, in a sequence determined by the lottery, will be men whose 20th birthday falls during the calendar year the induction takes place, followed, if needed, by those aged 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 19 and 18 year olds (in that order).

On the Ghosn escape : France does not extradite her own citizens (except to other UE members with the proper mandate) and a government secretary of state confirmed as such during an interview on TV. If Ghosn make it to France (if there's political will, there's a way because it's Lebanon and the ties are still strong), Japan would have to settle for a French trial.

That's probably the best deal he could get and one would imagine that's the ultimate objective.

Also didnt they spend like tens of millions making ads again with Hemsworth and Minogue begging brexiteers to fly over for holidays?
