Nah, they'd get ripped mercilessly, especially LeBron, and everyone would speculate on how long Spoelstra and Bosh were going to stay with the team.

The Bulls and the Thunder, even though they're looking to win now, feature young enough players (who didn't predict a slew of championships while switching teams) to still have a grace period.  That's long gone for the Heat.

Excited to see this Cole kid tonight in Charlotte.  This is the only Miami Heat game we get unfortunately :(

Last game was as fun as any last year though so I'm excited.

If I had to pick, I'd say the finals are gonna be OKC vs. Miami and I don't really know which team will win.  OKC is young and their team stayed pretty much intact from last year, while the Heat are just pissed although still susceptible to a zone.  I like Kevin Durant better than anyone on the Heat but that's just a matter of personal preference.

Everyone is picking that Finals match-up, pretty much. It'd be a fun series to watch - transition baskets galore - but I think the Heat would win that one handily, really. Who is going to guard LeBron? Durant would get killed and the coach would have to hide him elsewhere. Ibaka would get fouled out. On the other hand, LeBron can keep Durant outside the 3pt line for the whole series if he so chooses. Durant can still score plenty but the efficiency would go right down. Westbrook has the physical tools to guard Wade but makes too many mistakes to really be a good defender. Over a series, Wade would eat his lunch and they'd have to put Harden on him.

Now the Grizzlies are a team that could actually guard the Heat. Unleash Tony Allen on either Wade and LeBron and you have a fighting chance. Z-Bo and Gasol would destroy the Heat's front line in the paint, I'm betting.

Of course, as we saw last night, the zone can be wildly effective against the Heat but if they get Mike Miller back, they can just go small and load up on shooting with James Jones and Miller and hit 3s until the zone gets called off. They definitely need to work on their anti-zone offense more though.

Heat looking exhausted today, after the Celtics taking them to the wire last night. There are going to be a lot of lousy games this season :lol In general so far, turnovers seem way up, and the shooting has been horrible.

True but I think the older teams are going to struggle the most. I'm know the Celtics are missing Pierce but there is a decent chance they will start the season 0-3. It won't matter because the east is full of so many weak teams but still.

Dallas also has a pretty good chance of starting 0-3 as they play the Thunder tomorrow and unfortunately for them the west is not nearly as easy.

I've given up on Dallas competing this year. Haven't seen the slightest shred of effort from them yet, which they'll really need to offset their personnel losses. I think Carlisle can work wonders with a smallball line-up eventually, but they have to fucking wake up first.

Celtics are a lost cause without Pierce. KG still plays hard but he just can't seem to take a goddamn shot anymore.  Which leaves Rondo and Ray, and Rondo still can't shoot. After that it's basically Brandon Bass carrying the load, which is not a great place to be.

No one specific, it's more of a symptom of most sports commentating, especially basketball; with football those comments tend to be aimed at QBs exclusively, whereas any white guy who has post moves or ball handling skill is a a Rhodes Scholar.

Kevin Love does seem bright for an athlete.

Remarkable Dallas stats (I'm bored):

Greg Stiemsma in 20 minutes of playing time for the Celtics has two more blocks than the entire Dallas Mavericks' roster in three games.

Ten players on the team have a FG% of .423 or worse.

Lamar Odom has a FG% of .148. His PER is -3.8. MINUS!

The two centers are averaging a combined 3.3 defense rebounds per game.

It's that horrific facial hair. He went from looking like he was a tall 13 year old to a child molester.

Only explanation.

Brandon Knight against the Cavs was just...then again it was the Cavs.

Why did Joe D give Stuckey $25 million again?

Oh wait, he's paying Charlie V and Ben Gordon $20 million a year to miss long twos.

This team can't shoot, this team can't play defense, and this team can't rebound. A team of Vince Carter, Jason Terry, Jason Kidd, Lamar Odom, Shawn Marion, and Dirk Nowitzki would dominate in 2004. In 2012, they are getting dominated by the Timberwolves.

They're more likely to be really shaky early and get better towards the end of the season, considering that the lost two three major pieces from last years team. If they're 10-23 at the half-way point I'll be freaking out but not after their fifth game.

Hm.

Sam Amick @sam_amick Close
Kings coach Paul Westphal says Cousins demanded to be traded: "When a player continually, aggressively, lets it be known that he is...

Sam Amick @sam_amick Close
Westphal: "...unwilling/unable to embrace traveling in the same direction as his team, it cannot be ignored indefinitely."

Sam Amick @sam_amick Close
Cousins' agent, John Greig, tells SI.com: "DeMarcus never demanded a trade. I'm surprised the Kings, if they believe the player wanted..."

Greig: "...a trade, wouldn't have made a phone call to his representative. Maybe Westphal is just feeling the heat early this season."

Cousins told Westphal twice to trade him, as the Kings coach told media, but Kings big man's camp contends it wasn't a legitimate demand.

Sam Amick @sam_amick Close
They contend it was responsive, as in "If you don't like me, then trade me now." Westphal-Cousins relationship obviously in dire straits.

The amazing thing is that the Kings FO acted as though  the roster and coach were a winning formula.

They will make the playoffs and they probably will even end up with a decent record but they are screwed for this season unless they land Dwight Howard or something. They have no defense and a lack of intangible pieces and none of the pieces really fit and they are a year older.  Having Vince Carter on your team is symbolic of under-achieving.

A playoff spot isn't a given. This team cannot afford to lose winnable games early on in the season because they are going to get hit hard by the condensed schedule. And, as Stoney just pointed out, Vince Carter!

If one of the team's best players is averaging 8/2/2 on 35% shooting, it's time to scout Andre Drummond.

He doesn't have a negative PER, so I guess that's something.

One final note: San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich was asked about Ricky Rubio. Specifically, how difficult it would be for him to adjust to American culture. Popovich's response was classic: "These guys, they travel around the world," Popovich said of international players like Rubio and his own Manu Ginobili. "They're more cultured than we are. Everyone acts like Americans are the ones... we have sort of an arrogance about us. Like we're the cultured ones? Are you serious? Have you watched TV lately? Have you seen what Americans do? How many languages do you speak? And you wonder how they're going to adjust to our culture? I hope they avoid it and keep their own!"
