Ah got it, so that if something cool happens in the last minutes of the game you can catch it.

I'll probably have a lot more of these questions as they come up

Yeah. It has been a thing on twitter for a while, informally. Somebody does something awesome and people start tweeting that hashtag. Now it's official though. You can split-screen it too!

I casually follow the NBA until after christmas, when football is close to being over/baseball postseason is over so I can then focus on the NBA 100%.  Watched a few of the openers yesterday but I probably won't sit down and watch a full game for a while.

aka I'm a bandwagon-er according to most gaffers.  fuck that, I ain't got the time (er, nor the access) for most regular season shit

In the first half of the Mavericks' game against the Jazz:

Darren Collison is 5-6 shooting with 7 assists and 13 points.

If he can put up numbers like that consistently...wow.

I'm not sure what magical draft picks your father is hoping for but the Rockets are basically in the best position they've been in for years. They have a franchise player now. A young point guard. And a relatively decent center by NBA standards. I mean they aren't going to be amazing or anything but their future is a lot brighter than its been in awhile.

I mean I actually want to see them on league pass now which hasn't been the case in a long time.

Enough cap space for a major acquisition too. They're in pretty great shape all of a sudden, like New Orleans.

25-5-5 is in play for Harden this year. Those endless high pick and roll sets and Houston's pace is just a recipe for eye-popping numbers. And Lin was getting to the rim too. I assume his scoring will pick up significantly as his knee gets stronger. Add someone like Zach Randolph and they'd be scary.

Reworking the Rockets around is the most excited I've been about them in years. They're like the polar opposite of the Astros who is full of geezers and washed up players.

Why do the Lakers need the Princeton offence, which was designed for a bunch of non-athletic white college guys? Just let Nash push the ball, run pick and rolls and find cracks in the defense. When you have lots of new guys to integrate, keep it simple. Having Nash pass it off to a big man like Derek Fisher did all those years is a total waste of his talents.

Harden and Lin have made the Rockets my favorite team to watch so far. Harden is so freakin' good it's ridiculous. People talk about how easy Durant scores (and it's true) but Harden has been even more efficient...and now he's doing it in volume.

Worth noting that Lin is continuing to do all the things he was doing in NYC too. Amazing how everyone thinks that he wouldn't be able to duplicate his successes....while Ray Felton's good year was a cast-iron guarantee that he'd be good again in NY...?

Lin's finishing will improve and the turnovers will go down as well. In a couple of months, Hardlin could contend with Manu/Parker and Kobe/Nash for best backcourt in the league. It is weird to see Lin rebounding, then immediately passing off to Harden almost every time though...over time i'd expect them to mix it up 50:50 or close to it.

Steph Curry is also lighting it up tonight.

Chicago bitchslapped Cleveland last night. It was ugly as hell.

I guess that team can still really play defense well, people probably shouldn't sleep on them just because Rose is gone.

I really hope Rose doesn't re-injure himself. It's amazing how far rehabilitation has come over the years. Adrian Peterson's rapid return from tearing his ACL late last year has been stunning. Rose has worked almost as hard as him to get back, plus plays a less demanding sport so hopefully he'll be fully back

I'm pushing back at the statement that basketball is a less demanding sport that football.  Both are demanding but basketball players are generally in much better overall shape than football players, and big names like Rose, Bron, and others are so all over the court and so involved, there's a factor of endurance and strength that you just don't get in football as often.

Dallas looked good again tonight. Granted, they were playing against Charlotte, but still.

Darren Collison, OJ Mayo, Vince Carter, and Chris Caveman combined for 33 of 50 shooting and 82 points. Collison had 10 assists on his own. I don't even know who 3 of those guys are! But apparently I need to start rooting for them. Also, Rick Carlisle is a coaching genius.

It'll be really interesting to see how Dirk fits into this new team when he returns in a couple of weeks.

eh, was not impressed by that Heat performance. Denver killed them in the paint, ran up 66pts on them in the first half. If they're going to repeat, they'll be doing it with elite D and didn't see that tonight at all.

Really liked that Houston game last night.  Both teams seemed to falter in the 3rd then come back strong in the 4th with a buzzer beater to tie it up for overtime only to watch Portland come back really strong in OT to win it.

Basketball is a hell of a lot of fun.  Thank you, Gary Bettman for fucking hockey this year so I can spend some time with something else.

Agreed. And the team as currently constructed is still pretty flawed. What's more worrisome to me is Lin. He doesn't appear as quick as he was relatively speaking last year and he displays a bad tendency sometimes of just bulling ahead into the paint and tossing up any shot.

Just a few weeks ago he was complaining about not being able to get to the basket at all because of his knee, so I was surprised at how good he was TBH. I'm assuming he will gradually improve as it strengthens.

The Rockets are big-time flawed, yes. But they weren't put together with any consideration whatsoever of the product on the floor this season. Any success they have this year is a windfall (and actually they'd be better tanking really)
